This topic is a huge reason i left my charismatic church. I was the children’s department leader. Our original paster died and the new ‘paster’ at first kept to a decent timely order but after a year kept going super long. That was a huge strain on my department that had a very tight time frame (because we only have so much resources and space to keep the kids engaged, going long over the kids would get board after the lessons completion while waiting for their parents to come and was a huge stress for our low number of volunteers ) when this was brought up the feed back was that it was the move of the spirit that kept making service so long and wasnt anything they could do. What few. Services i did attend i knew it was just this paster getting emotionally worked up and excusing his undisciplined ability to keep track of time by blaming the holy spirit

I attended a church where this happened regularly - the service started at 10.30am but there was coffee before, so tried to get there for 10.15am. With young children 4 and 6 who would have had breakfast at around 8am. They’d have juice and one biscuit at 10.15. So 11am the children left the main service to go to someone who was in the children ministry like yourself. Often the service would then go on until 12.45pm, on occasion 1pm! That’s around 5 hours without a meal for young children, its a long time! They’d usually have dinner at 12am. So I can’t imagine the job you had with children getting hungry as well as restless, going an hour over their usual lunch time. I don’t understand how this wasn’t taken into account, It’s just basic needs for kids to have a routine time for meals. By the time we got home it would be 1.30pm and we’d have to give the children preprepared food as soon as they got out of the youth team room.

I just started my Masters in Biblical Studies at the Masters University and I am amazed at how easily the Word of God is abused. The Holy Spirit does indeed help us, to lead us into all truth and reminds us of Jesus. Without the Holy Spirit, it would be impossible for me to say that Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior. I wouldn’t be able to open up the Bible and KNOW it’s all true, I just couldn’t do that without the Spirit of God.

I left a church around 2021 which was led by a newly-hired, left-leaning Pastor and a group of Elders who lacked discernment. They were one of those churches that had everything right on their Doctrinal Statement but the day-to-day practices didn't align with the Statement. Since I left, I've occasionally checked back in to see what's going on (through watching some online services). I noticed that their worship music has become much more charismatic, with Hillsong/Bethel songs being mixed in with old hymns. Sad to see this church going in the wrong direction. But, I have since found a great Reformed Baptist church committed to all the right things, and I'm happy there. Discernment content like this video has been very helpful to me over the last several years. A big "Thank You" to both Justin and Scott for this discussion!

When I became a Christian at 16, I attended an FIEC church (Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches). Very Reformed; very Calvinistic; and very Cessationist. I have never since attended a church that had such great exegetical preaching of the Word. ONLY the Authorised Version of the Bible was used. Some years later, and married, my husband and I attended an AOG church. The gift of tongues and other gifts of the Spirit were used (though not by me; apart from anything else I am very reserved by nature) but everything was very orderly and, again, the Bible was taught in an exegetical manner. Once, however, we attended a certain week long, interdenominational conference and a ‘move of the Spirit’ apparently broke out; though it seemed to bypass me. I was so shocked! It started out with hysterical laughter and descended to people crawling on all fours and barking wildly like dogs. I don’t think it was demonic or anything like that, but it was so obviously manufactured and hysterical. There was certainly nothing orderly about it. I do believe in the use of the Gifts of the Spirit today, but we should be very discerning. If it is disorderly and tie-curlingly cringy, we should probably avoid it and it is almost certainly of the flesh and not the Spirit.

@11:00 I think Scott made a great point people miss. You have to make a second category of prophesy to be a continuationist. Any time God speaks it is authoritative. The people who believe those gifts continue always say no, this isn’t new scripture but how can God speak less than authoritative in any way? It’s a dissatisfaction of the sufficiency of scripture. Kathryn Krick says god is doing a new thing outside of scripture so she can manipulate people who don’t know scripture. Cults love this type of teaching. Sufficiency and a closed canon is a guardian against false teaching.

"There are three errors to avoid. Some pretend to be guided by the Spirit and neglect the written Word. Some despise the teaching of the Spirit and trust to their own understanding of the Word. Others reject both the Spirit and the Word and go after another rule and guide. "To none of these is the promise of the Spirit given. They are left to their foolish, corrupt imaginations. "Scripture is the believer’s rule and the Holy Spirit is his guide. "Do we continue in prayer, and abound in prayer, as we ought, for that Spirit who alone can lead us into all truth? For that unction which teaches us all things with assurance and experience? There is no duty in this world more acceptable to God than fervent prayers for a right understanding of his mind and will in his Word. On this, everything else depends." -John Owen, _Pneumatology,_ written in the 1600's.
@lindajohnson420419 сағат бұрын
Owen lived and wrote in the 1600s. His use of the word, "unction", shows that this is not a strange, new teaching. The idea of the "unction" of the Holy Spirit, NOTHING like wild, disorderly Azusa Street manifestations, is the old way of thinking. Those Christians would never dream of conceding an experience of the Holy Spirit to something like that. That is not the Holy Spirit, but that doesn't mean there is no experience of God. The experiences the Bible teaches are the ones we should desire and seek.

24:00 If you are desiring to read and follow His Word then you have grace upon you. If you’re a regenerate believer then you are indwelt with the Holy Spirit leading us to truth. No one seeks God. Therefore if you are, you are being lead by Jesus Christ(John 16&17) His Word is what reveals truth and sanctifies us. However, to commune with the Holy Spirit as Paul says in Corinthians that’s a two way street. We have a living God who comforts and strengthens us. We feel it. I may not have the way to explain it but it’s the mystery of God. Be careful of Hyper cessation. To have a relationship with Jesus He is not distant. Let’s not lose the forest for the trees. God bless you guys. Truly love what you guys do to spread the gospel. That’s the most important thing!

I question that any of the gifts have remained today. The term "sign gifts" is only used to my knowledge in 1 Corintians 14:22. Its interesting to note that the last person we receive authoritative prophesy is from Jesus and then the Apostles. As for the question if a prophesy is infallible, we receive such texts as 1 Thessalonians 5:19-22" and 1 Corinthians 14:26-33. These texts put tongues and prophesy at the time as less authoritative, and subordinate to scripture. Furthermore these gifts were used , not as authoritative words from the Lord, but to encourage the congregation that heard them. It seems the last authoritative prophetic messages in the Bible were from Jesus and the Apostles. This shows me that God did indeed cease bringing such prophetic words with the completion of scripture. That being said, what about the so called "other gifts" that supposedly remain today? I strongly doubt it. There is nothing even remotely supernatural about these abilities. They seem like simple talents, skills and training that people possess that are simply used to glorify God and build up others. First, Paul doesn't separate these gifts into 'remaining' and 'ceasing'. For example, in 1 Coritnithians 12: 7-10 we get gifts of healing, prophesy and words of knowledge along with words of wise advice. In Romans 12: 6-16 we also get a list that has the gift of prophesy along with serving, teaching encouragement, generosity, leadership and kindness. These 'remaining gifts' can easily be understood as the way God has created people with their own distinct traits, the fruit of the Spirit or simply discipleship and training. Haven't all of us seen non-Christians who are great servants, encouragers and generous? I've even met talented teachers who aren't believers. The character traits are a byproduct of the fruit of the Spirit or a combination of natural disposition, training and skill sets. So from my observation, not only have the so-called "Sign Gifts" ceased, they all have, being replaced by the Scriptures themselves, the Fruit of the Spirit and discipleship.

I think that Sean is not as much of an opponent of cessationism as he thinks he is. This is heartbreaking to me since I’ve known the family for about 30 years and never thought that this would happen and that these heretics would infiltrate into victory Christian, but just being in agreement with me that God would open Pastor Paul’s eyes thank you Justin in advance for reading this comment And for any input that you feel lead to input in the name of Jesus, God bless you

I sat in VCC under BJD from mid 80s to mid-90s [pre-rise of NAR], went to their VBI Bible school for several years and volunteered in their ministry most of that time. I clearly saw WOF and prosperity preachers often at his pulpit and featured in conferences time and time again--I saw a heart for the lost and missions from BJD and Sharon, however, firsthand I experienced the most iconic Charismatic leaders of the time and are even still on platforms today. I choose not to mention names, but research into the Oral Roberts charismatic fellowship of the day became a pool of speakers for BJD's pulpit guests. P.S. I also attended ORU grad school btw 1986 and 1993 only to say that these are my receipts, and I want to add my story to this comment. I left the Tulsa Charismatic church world in the mid 90s never to return quite disillusioned with a lot of soul searching, Bible searching and deconstructing my Charismatic theology and reconstructing a deeply rooted faith and pursuing to stay grounded in the whole counsel of scripture.

I'm glad you tackled this issue of "hyper-cessationism". Sean from Revealing Truth typically puts out solid content, but just last week, he was critical of you and others for holding a conference on cessationism, and he didn't see the point of such a thing. He called us hyper-cessationists, which was almost insulting, but to your point, I have no idea what that even is. It's a ridiculous assertion.

I find it a bit ironic that you quote 1 Cor 14 when it comes to orderly assemblies (which I agree Paul says) but then this same verse is used to justify a style of gathering of believers that runs contrary to that same chapter. Paul says that our assemblies are for the edification of the body of Christ, but I have no clue how you do that when the entire service is a monologue from the pulpit. I spent nearly 60 years in Reformed / Presbyterian churches until leaving the institutional church altogether about three years ago. Now when I gather with my fellow saints, there is no fixed order of worship. Each person contributes as the Holy Spirit leads. For many, this style of gather would constitute chaos because there is no central leader or authority governing the gathering. Yet my current church is a place where I can confess my sins and seek God's forgiveness because we meet in an intimate setting where there is no fear of judgment. To be honest, while I agree that God is not a God of chaos, nor is He one to suppress emotion either. 1 Cor 14 shows us a balanced approach to our assemblies, and few Christians seem to appreciate this

I just wish that the hypercharismatics would stop emphasizing the physical gifts and pay more attention to true discernment, empathy, generosity, humble servanthood, and worship God in real Spirit and in Truth. If only they would step back and listen to their conscience, obey the Holy Spirit and repent, and rightly divide the Word of Truth. Please, Lord! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

I don't know about a hyper-cessationist but: "A Hyper-Calvinist is an orthodox Calvinist being described by an Arminian" -- R.C. Sproul “It is a sad twist of irony that those who claim to be most focused on the Holy Spirit are in actuality the ones doing the most to abuse, grieve, insult, misrepresent, quench, and dishonor Him. How do they do it? By attributing to Him words He did not say, deeds He did not do, phenomena He did not produce, and experiences that have nothing to do with Him. They boldly plaster His name on that which is not His work.” - John MacArthur I think that the Charismatic movement has significantly diminished worship. It has taken it out of the area of truth, out of the mind, and reduced it to the feelings of the flesh. -- John MacArthur It is a strange irony to me, in the Charismatic movement, that if you criticize them, if you endeavor to be vigilant and discerning, and if you endeavor to contend for the truth and hold them to Scripture and expose their error, they will condemn you as the sinner... How do I know that? I have lived that. -- John MacArthur "Nowhere in Scripture do we see real gifts of the Spirit operating when someone is out of control or under some sort of supernatural seizure. Nowhere does the New Testament teach that the Spirit of God causes Christians to fall into a trance, faint, or lapse into frenzied behavior. On the contrary, "The fruit of the Spirit is... self-control". -- John MacArthur

Pharisees, Matthew 23:1-36 (Jesus speaking): "For they bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on men's shoulders, but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers." (v4) ..."You shut the Kingdom of Heaven in men's faces..." (v13) "Blind guides, who strain out a gnat & swallow a camel!"(v24) "You outwardly appear righteous before men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy & lawlessness." But, in Peter’s time, there WAS no completed Canon of Scripture? You can’t have it both ways. How do you view that in certain circumstances, particularly of danger, we can feel a sudden, strong, urge to do something, or not to do something? Believers who have felt such a sudden caution in their spirit, had they ignored the urging, would have certainly met with some danger or injury? Clearly, we can agree to differ in these non-soteriological issues, but have you never felt such a thing yourself Mr Peters?

As I've been listening, I've been asking: If God's gifts through people are infallible, then shouldn't the other gifts given by God be just as infallible? If true Prophesy is infallible, then shouldn't true gifts like teaching, generosity, etc be just as infallible without the influence of the person's fallen nature or immaturity? Or maybe perhaps these so called gifts aren't actually gifts at all but natural human ability surrendered to the authority of Christ and His Word.

Help! what scriptures says gifts given by God are infallible ? I’m struggling understanding the underpinnings of your initial premise . Little help please❤

@@davidforrest4791 Hey there. What I'm saying is that that I disagree with the idea that prophetic expressions in the early church were infallible, any more than any of the other gifts at that time were infallible. What it seems is that Justin Peters is saying that any true gift of prophesy would be without any error. Yet they were told in 1 Thessalonians 5:19-21 to 19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise prophecies. 21 Test all things; hold fast what is good. 1 Thessalonians 5:19-21. That being said, from what I understand, all of the gifts of the Spirit were used in the establishment of the church and with the completion of the Canon of scripture, are no longer needed, thus have ceased. What we typically call "gifts" are simply a combination of our inborn talents, the fruit of the Spirit maturing us, and skills and training that we have gained.

The ministry of frustration so far. "...Freely you received, freely give." (Matt. 10:8) is not for them. GTY compared to them is a real Biblical deal.

Apostle Paul said that the gifts wouldn't cease until that which is perfect has come.(1 Corinthians 13:10) This word (perfect) is not neuter in the greek. It means a (Parousia) the return of Christ.
@maxmustermann120622 сағат бұрын
But you're ignoring the descriptions of the spiritual gifts in Scripture. Take a look at the descriptions of tongues and speaking in tongues in Act 2 and 1 Corinthians 12 and 14. Those descriptions don't match what we see today.
@rickorider21 сағат бұрын
So perfect means the return of Christ??? How do you get that? Perfect can mean complete. Paul was given to complete the word of God now the revelation of the mystery has been revealed. God is not revealing anything today that we already know in his Word. That is why prophesy is no longer required. All need today is in Paul's 13 epistals written down.

But, surely, there IS, when talking about prophecy, a difference in the NT GIFT of prophecy, and the OT OFFICE of the Prophet? Certainly, I have received ‘words of knowledge’, meant for me PERSONALLY, that were spot on. And doesn’t the Book of Joel, amongst other passages, teach that in the Last Days the Gifts of the Spirit, or at least some of them, will be poured out? Such as: “Your young men shall see visions and your old men shall dream dreams”. It also talks about men and hand-maidens prophesying. You can’t just write these out of Scripture.

They way these two brothers speak about another brother in Christ whom they disagree with not even saying his name. Ryan Denton. Is disgusting. And then Justin says he’s “gotten famous” for opposing hyper-cessationism. No he hasn’t he’s a brother who has his own evangelistic ministry apart from this topic.

The revelation of the mystery that the risen Christ gave to Paul was given to complete the word of God. God is not saying anything more today that he has already told us in the Word. We cannot say "God told me" and say that it's not authoritative. Paul says its word that works effectally in us. Paul tells Timothy that the word is able to make us perfect for every good work. All this "I feel God is saying" is a load of rubbish.

The way I understand it - the gift of prophecy, is speaking forth the Word of God. That word has been written down, and according to Hebrews 1:1 & 2, in these days, it's been spoken to us through the Son...No longer "prophets" as we understand them in the OT.
@BlindServantMark16 сағат бұрын
The scripture 'earnestly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy' is to be honored and obeyed today as much as any time in New Testament history. Don't be deceived by someone who was not there (1900+ years ago) saying that 'some of the gifts have ceased'. There is no time stamp in the bible on the gifts. None!
