We are purchasing a new home. I am not a minimalist but we do live in 600 soft, so not a lot of room for stuff. We have been gobsmacked when touring homes, at how much stuff people have in their home. 200 t-shirts…100 dolls and knickknacks everywhere. It makes my head spin. When I organize I am still using the same bins that I bought 35 years ago. If I want a “new” basket I will wait until the thrift store has what I need. The plastic buying is overwhelming! Great video!

Agree it’s all to perfect instead of helping people learn to live with only the stuff they need instead of just tons of stuff.

I love what you said about revering and honoring the objects in your home, and that sets up a distinct juxtaposition between minimalism and organization and how they come at this from opposite directions. Minimalism encourages you to *only* bring those objects into your home that you love (i.e. one beautiful table or a memory-sparking souvenir), while Organization™️ encourages you to revere your stuff simply because it is abundant and orderly. So I agree that the show is a fun watch, but it really does seem to glorify STUFF and how we can best highlight, contain, showcase and sometimes literally put it on a pedestal. A maximalist version of organization.

Also, the homes have so much back stock of stuff. How many bottles of dish soap do you need at one time.

I love how you analyzed staged organizing shows, and called out the ridiculousness of some of it. I’ve been passionate about organizing most of my life, and everyone who knows me knows that. But so many people are shocked to learn I’ve never stepped foot in a Container Store. I don’t think we need to be consuming more things to put things in. I also organize realistically - not just to make it instagram worthy. Thanks for speaking up about all of this, Rebecca! 💖

Yes! I went into a Container Store one time and came out with a single sheet of labels. There was nothing in there that I couldn't get by repurposing something I owned, thrifting, or makeshifting. I could also find far more ethical/sustainable options and cheaper prices elsewhere. 😆 It was pretty inside, though.

You are the voice of reason and I hope your channel grows and grows so more people get the message! I’m not a minimalist but I’m learning about how products are produced and where, then doing my best to make good decisions about what I do buy. Quality over quantity is definitely important to me. And clean ingredients as well - in my food, personal care products, home goods, and clothing. Your channel helps me along my journey as do others. Thank you!

The show is about as far away from sustainable living and having just enough as you can get. It is encouraging holding on to more than you need, totally consumerism maximised. Love your vlogs Rebecca, your ideas are so kind!

I, like millions of others, discovered The Home Edit on Netflix. I was so inspired watching you work, and bring such an amazing perspective to peoples live to make it better. The show, when originally came out, was allI talked about. I loved it, I loved the chemistry, and the work that was being done, it spoke to me. When the Holidays arrived, my husband knowing my excitement for the show purchased a huge selection of your containers, and labels so I could joyfully reproduce my “home edited” pantry and cabinets. Which I did! Then one day, as I was unloading my dishwasher, I discovered a melted container. I was horrified, and ran to the website to see the product description and discovered that it said “NOT DISHWASHER SAFE.” I was actually shocked that such an expensive food container system could only be washed by hand, but there it was. Is that even sterile? I made sure my husband knew of this shocking flaw in the containers, and he agreed to be very careful to not let this happen again. Shortly thereafter, my mother in-law came to visit and while I was at work she put two container into the dishwasher. They were of course destroyed. A couple months later, while we are on vacation our pet sitter did the same. I can go on, and on. In total I have lost about a dozen assorted containers due to house guests and friends thinking they doing something sweet by running some dishes. How devastating to have something you love, but is not created to function in our world in an actual useful and simple utilitarian way. How can they the name The Home Edit so proudly on a product that is clearly inferior. I have containers from target that were 25% the cost of these containers, and have never had an issue with them. It is heartbreaking so be so excited about a storage system that was filled with inspiration, only to discover that it is such a disappointment. All style, no substance. To be honest, it has even given me pause on watching the new season of the show, something I would have been thrilled by now is fraught with distrust. I am sure I am not the only one to have this disappointing experience, but as I took yet another large container out of the dishwasher this morning, that our house guest washed yesterday while we were at work. I was again reminded of how frustrating this collection has been.

I personally didn't like that the reveals bled into the following episodes in season 2, but I agree with so much of what you said! So. Much. Plastic. One aspect that I wish they worked with the client on is their organization style, ie. having things exposed vs. hidden. I felt like Clea and Joanna just made decisions on what they personally like displayed or tucked away. I think they mentioned in S1 that they frequently return to spaces and give a refresh which tells me the system failed (not because it's a faulty system, but because there was a lack of communication and instruction on how to maintain).

I haven’t even seen the show because we don’t have tv but seeing your picture of the little kids playroom was just so unreal. How will that mom, feel when friends come over and dump everything into a pile? She will have to lock the door and not let anyone play. I agree the plastic bins were awful. I have small cardboard boxes separating my stuff. Terrible to make people want this kind of order. I agree with what you said except that you like the show because it is too commercial.

Agree. I have only watched a couple of episodes, but what I watched seemed over produced and too made for TV perfect. It is a very popular show and I do love a good before and after but, the video's that I really enjoy, on KZbin in particular, are like yours. I want to see people's real stuff, the actual process and to hear about the how and why. I was excited when I first heard about Home Edit, but, for me, it was a miss.

And to add to my earlier comment, I loved Marie Kondo at first but was turned off when she started selling merch that was mostly just pretty but not necessarily practical or economic... would love for a new global voice of organization that would focus on sustainability. Especially giving tips on how to organize by reusing what you have.

I totally agree with your assessment of the cringy things in this show, Rebecca. I have never seen it because I don't watch TV. (KZbin is my TV. :D ) But I think all that plastic is criminal. Plus it's true that there is no point in organizing someone's home if you don't give them some kind of plan to keep it that way...a plan that will work for their lifestyle. Good and interesting video. ♥ I like that you also said what you like about the show. Sounds like it's good entertainment, if nothing else. I personally prefer to watch people like you and other minimalists, such as The Minimal Mom, who really tries to help people find a way to keep their spaces organized by finding a system that works for them. ♥

You bring up very good points that I hadn't even thought about. I have only watched the 1st season, and I enjoyed it just fine. However, I tend to cringe the eff out of rainbow-color organization. I just hate that, and I personally think it's not a very efficient way of organizing anything. I also hated the unashamed consummerism the show promotes. I just found your channel with this video, and I'm intrigued. Subscribed! 😊

I love Home Edit and I also watch a lot of youtube minimalists. I think I fall somewhere in between. I need things to be extremely organised by color and by size and in symmetry as I get overwhelmed by anything that is not. So seeing them organise people's homes is entertaining to me. At the same time I absolutely agree with the overuse of plastic bins and just cannot understand why there needs to be such an excess of everything. A youtuber who's name I don't remember said it best which is true for most people - you declutter until it fits the bin/shelf/drawer you have. You don't buy more bins/shelves/drawers to fit the stuff you have.

I agree with only a portion of what you’ve highlighted here. For me, the excess that is left or created even after the “edit” makes me cringe. However, that is only slightly eclipsed by the huge cringe I experience by the amount of future waste that is being created and exemplified by containing items by using those horrible plastic bins!!When they worked on the women’s office with all of the natural material baskets, I had hoped they would pivot into seeing the benefit of using those environmentally friendly, entrepreneurially procured, beautiful baskets as better containers for the future THE product lines rather than using plastic containers that Will pollute our world for many, many years!! What happens to all of those bins as they chip, get scratched, or simply aren’t part of the next trend on the 21st century? And as for the ladies, I like the energy (somewhat - if I hear another screech/scream of “apparently” huge delight, I WILL scream) that the media portrays as positive. I did not like the way they spoke about the clients “behind their back” (the episode with the lady who had a lot of sentimental items is one example). They do appear to be inclusive by entertaining the needs of rich/upper-middle class, ethnically diverse people but I can’t help but be concerned that they are perpetuating the consumeristic bigger is better image with their children, business expansionism, and the general “ever since Netflix” fame that engulfs so much American content. I much prefer your videos of authentic living with essential, earth-friendly products. I am somewhat disappointed that you can find THE to be anything but vulgar exploitation of people, our planet, and art of simply living in general.

I agree with you almost entirely. I think you might feel a bit less negatively if you looked up Clutterbug here on KZbin and watched a description of the "butterfly" organization style. The THE co-hosts are almost personifications of the butterfly style, where they have personally benefitted immensely from visible organization. They need visibility to stay organized. Opaque baskets work great for many, but not butterflies. The co-hosts definitely use what has worked for them personally more often than considering that others might need different styles. There are also definitely more sustainable options for butterflies, such as shallow trays, pegboards, and glass containers, or even open shelving. They sometimes used those kinds of products, but definitely leaned hard into the dang acrylic containers. Even the lazy susans. But mass media has never struck me as emphasizing sustainability...

Organiser porn 😂 I watched both series and just marvelled at how much "stuff" people felt the need to have I use old shoe boxes to organise underwear and old cat food boxes to organise my spices. Excellent video! I had a similar reaction -- loved watching the show for entertainment and comfort (it's aesthetically pleasing, the hosts are so fun and cheery) but really couldn't get my mind around how much PRODUCT they 'had to' buy to keep up their look. It's not achievable financially, or sustainable as a lifestyle for the homeowner, let alone the environmental impact of that much STUFF. It really is a fun show to watch, but didn't teach me or inspire me to declutter.... it just left me feeling momentarily sad that I'll never have a cute pantry that has individually wrapped snacks laid out ROYGBIV style. Then I snapped out of it because at my core level, I don't WANT a pantry like that.

OMG! 🤦‍♀️ This is shocking. I didn't knew the show because I don't have a Netflix account anymore but in the scenes you were mentioning, the people just have WAY TOO MUCH stuff! 🤤🤤🤤 A pantry full of food which gets bad so quickly like vegetables and fruit - even if you have a family with 2 or 3 children - the stuff wouldn't be eaten fast enough until it's rotten.. What do you do with a draw full of make-up with sooo many duplicates?! Most of it gets bad before you're able to use it up. And being the cool and crazy aunt of 4 children - I totally agree on the kids areas...yes children should learn how to maintain their room and from time to time clean it up - But there is a difference in playing and organising - and children should have a right to play and be messy...life assimilates them in the treadmill soon enough. To me a lot of these scenes you were showing, seemed like houses of well organised hoarders. Just because you have so much space doesn't mean you need to fill it with stuff. I don't think I have anything missed by not watching it...I prefer watching your KZbin videos Rebecca, where there is mindful and sustainable content. Thank you for that 💚🍀 Maybe you should write to Netflix to make your own show there 😘😋😘

There was an episode in season 1 where they went back to an old client to organise (I thing the pantry) once again, because the client couldn't keep it neat. I think this really shows that 1, they don't actually teach the clients how to keep staying organised, and 2, this way they will never actually run out of clients. Kinda sad

Yes, this. My friend let me borrow their book and it wasn't appealing at all. I hate the whole rainbow organized thing, for one. And the book was just full of so much stuff. Like...there was a kids play room or something and all the crayons were organized but there were fifty of each colour. Huge pantries filled with thirty jars of tomato sauce and seventy plus boxes of tea. Why? Are you bathing in it? Are you the frigging Queen of England or the Mad Hatter? I didn't find it inspiring at all and instead thought it unnecessary and unrelatable, like it was geared toward people consumed with consuming things. If the series is anything like the book I have no need to give it a try.

The open closet episode annoyed me for two reasons. At no point did they suggest adding doors to anything to hide away items which don't need displaying. They looked like PAX frames to me so would have been a very simple thing to do. Also the shoe organisers didn't really fit in the shelves they used them in, so it had a huge amount of wasted space just for the aesthetic of having product. I like their personalities so I keep watching it but the product and rainbow aesthetic are both way too overdone.
