As someone who's super keen on starting homesteading as soon as can after I finish uni and can go back rural again, this brought me a lot of comfort. The cost aspect scares me, but I think I've developed a bit of a victim/passive mindset about it so I like what you said about changing that and going from there. Great video again Side note: as a physio student, all the best with your recovery too! If they've told you that you can put full weight through it I probably wouldn't worry about doing any damage with normal movement. Maybe just watch out for rocks for a bit 😉

Great to see that you turned a KZbin sow's ear into a silk purse brother! My father began farming in Western Australia when I was 2yo, starting with a piece of bushland that he bought for 8 cents per acre and some second-hand wheat farming machinery. Fifteen years later he sold the farm for $1.1 million, about $10 million in today's dollars. Don't let anyone tell you that you need to be a millionaire to start farming.

Only reasons I've been told to remove the bark is that leaving it on makes the wood decay faster and makes joins less secure. Great sized chicken run - hope you put a wire skirt on your fence to stop foxes digging under. Good on you for encouraging people to have a go.
@reganperry3 ай бұрын
That sounds fair enough. Be interesting to see how long they last. At least they were free! Foxes aren’t a huge issue for us because our blue healers fire up whenever even an echidna comes shuffling around. But to be extra sure I’ll be running a single wire electric fence line around the perimeter at fox nose height! In the past I’ve preferred to do that rather than bury the mesh as I’ve found the mesh rusts out over time.

Dad used take the bark off just the bit that would go in the ground, and dip that bit in old sump oil to discourage the bugs.

Best not to file back and forth with the chain sharpener. This will file the metal down. Fix the bar in place, get the angle correct with the guides or by sight and start stroking each tooth to get them right.

I'd like to spend 30 minutes with you with a chain saw file, maybe you could youtube that, when you pull the file backwards you are undoing the work of the forward stroke. My complements on your achievement so far.

I have to point out that in buying your property you have still paid for your timber in the chicken yard. Good on you for acknowledging that you don’t need to buy extra though!! Sometimes it’s just hard to get to the homestead location that you want, and life has you trapped in a city where you can’t do much, or even the weather is against you. It’s finally cooling off so I might be able to plant my garden (I like the cold weather vegetable) and enjoy our mild southern winter (feels like summer where I’m from-AK-50-75f) with only occasional overnight freezes. Carrots and broccoli and cabbage here I come!!
@reganperry3 ай бұрын
Yeah, I suppose you're right. Truth is though when we bought the property 8 years ago I definitely didn't see it for the wealth of resources it really was - I was just looking at it for the pure acreage. Weather has been weird this year, plus we're getting used to a new climate. We moved from sub-tropical to temperate/semi-arid so I'm really hoping I can grow a full veggie garden here. Good luck with yours!

Great video once again! When you have a sec. Check out a chainsaw stump vice. They cost about $15 and they secure your chainsaw while sharpening, which allows you to get a more accurate tooth angle on your filing.

I think it is a waste to cut down all the timber and burn it or dispose of it when you can make so much out of it my dad's sheds fences were all we needed out of the timber that was already growing on the property also there is a portable milling machine that you can get and make the same bords that you buy out of your own trees so you never need to buy planks of wood for furniture, flooring, walls whatever you need to make whatever you need
