Having learned at a very young age that any abnormal experiences were to be kept to myself, I can say that it is very depressing and isolating to have endured something horrible, then feel like no one believes you. It must have been so much harder for this man in that time, especially when everyone in his community would have known him.

Word spreads fast in small communities, and the inevitable rumor mill would eventually grow undeniably frustrating for Pier. You're absolutely right. Unfortunately, it may be best to keep such things to ones self instead of unleashing the flood gates of ridicule.
