Parasitism is a type of symbiosis but not all symbiosis is mutualism. There's actually like 9 different types of symbiosis and only one is mutualistic. Most parasites don't result in the death of the host. Parasites that "have no problem sucking the host dry" are known as parasitoids. So while you're right when you say the last of us is an example of symbiosis, the type of symbiosis is parasitism.
@discordiacreates66692 ай бұрын
Interesting, makes sense that there's subcategories though and I've wondered how much parasitism and symbiosis can or does overlap given how... It's pretty likely imo that parasites came first and some eventually learned to not kill their hosts and the ones that learned to be nice to their hosts eventually started being rewarded for being better neighbors and sooner or lately spawned fully mutualistic symbiotes, but irdk, probably a bit of a chicken or the egg sutuation, but still interesting to think about. Also, as someone passively interested in speculative biology and definitely interested in any real world biology that might effect pets I own/have owned/plan to own, interested if you have any suggestions for interesting stuff to look up? Just anything but parasitic worms, I've already met one really bad one that ate one of my fish... Yeah I'll take black grubs over that any day, even though I believe they're parasitic flatworms, but at least they're small and usually only affect the tail just under the skin, unlike gut or muscle parasites who are just rude imo
@yeetyote47912 ай бұрын
@@discordiacreates6669for speculative bio look up human bot flies and the phoresy they do, as well as new world screw worm. Unless you live in South America I wouldn’t be worried about either of those infesting your pets tho. Parasitoid wasps that lay their eggs in aphids are cool too.
@SSpencer7262 ай бұрын
That all makes sense, but he also said that Headcrabs are parasites when the body is still alive? The body even adapts to be better at hunting.
@discordiacreates6669Ай бұрын
@@yeetyote4791 thanks, and hey, I've actually heard of human botflies, super creepy and I find it very weird that at least one human has willingly been infested by them, although it does pose some interesting questions. I mean, botflies are parasites and my only personal experience with them is them wiping out my late mother's show rabbits, think we were both especially upset about the rexs, but it is pretty interesting nonetheless that they actually only become dangerous if stressed or rng put them in a bad position for both parties. Creepily enough, I could see one species in that group trying for symbiosis in their own way, though that seems more fitting for an alien planet ngl. Have to look up screw worms though, but wasps that use aphids as hosts? I've personally met a species that uses caterpillars and have a love/hate relationship with those ruby red beauties, absolutely gorgeous and was a very calm and peaceful creature so I just had to let them fly free, but I was still a bit mortified when one of the only two swallowtail chrysalis I've found outside and fostered for a short time, didn't hatch into a butterfly. Can't truly hate butterfly wasps though, they're just too passive toward humans, pretty, and I've raised a few caterpillars from eggs before so I know they play a vital role as caterpillars are naturally gluttons and will eat themselves to extinction without some limitor... So I guess at least some parasites are truly essential creatures and shouldn't be shunned or ignored, I'll definitely have to give them a bit more love when I'm designing concepts for speculative ecosystems. Thanks!
@discordiacreates6669Ай бұрын
@@SSpencer726 um... I'm not sure I'd classify that as alive, otherwise how do you define a fresh corpse? Sure, not instantly dead in every cell, but I'm pretty sure having your skull ripped open and brain lanced like that is pretty much an instant KO, although I think they'd be more in line with decomposers if they did allow the body itself to drop when the brain is severed, though they do probably fall under some more extreme subcategory of parasites since the way they do it is... Well, not entirely unheard of in the animal kingdom on Earth, it's just primarily an insect thing to replace the brain of a creature with one's own self

Roanoke, a question! Speaking of Jeff's head splitting in half, what are your thoughts on dividing the brain into independent halves a la the Twins from that one Russia game? People have survived severe head trauma with an entire hemisphere of the brain removed but then what happens if the removed half is maintained on its own?
@thezackast2752Ай бұрын
Not 100% sure if this answers the question but from what I've read the other hemisphere just starts making up shit for why stuff is happening. I remember I read a study a while back about some people, I think it might have been TBI patients who had both hemispheres but without the inter-hemisphere connection. What happened was they would have the left side pick something up and then ask what was going on, and the right side would make up something about doing something or other. I don't remember exactly.

Well Jeff’s infection vs Alex’s immunity could be down to something as simple as duration. Jeff from what we can tell was a hazard worker not a factory worker hence him and most of the bodies wearing hazmat suits. If Jeff’s suit was damaged and he went to work it may have just hit a sweet spot where he as inhaling enough spore to become infected but not exposed to enough raw fungal growth to be broken down for food.
