As Humans do what Humans always do, try and reach out into the stars to see if anyone else is out there, this entire ideology may prove extremely dangerous to our existence. As we found a goldilock planet in the distance, we immediately beamed a communication about its planets extended warranty every 24 hours for years. Eventually, something would speed its way towards our planet, basically telling us to shut up. But what was this species and why may their intentions be misunderstood? Also what about their biology? Lets discuss in todays episode over Battleship!

It always seemed to me like the aliens were dealing with their own internal issues during their time on Earth. Sometimes they're hyperagressive, taking out nearby military equipment and infrastructure, othertimes they're TRYING to handle things peacefully. It feels almost like it was originally a investigative mission, but when one of the ships was destroyed on entry, and the others were VERY quickly responded to with military vessels, civilian/non-combat aliens disagreed on the approach with the military/combat aliens. So depending on the ship, sometimes the talkers were in charge, and sometimes the grunts were in charge. Combine this with the language barrier and the fact that shots had been exchanged, and you have a recipe for labeling it an attack when it could just be grunts trying to establish a safe zone before phoning home for further instructions. IE "We had a ship blow up on entry, destroyed local miilitary and civlilan infrastructure, and got into multiple firefights with local water vessels. Please advise." "You did fucking WHAT?!"

@@raghnall847 Hahahahahahaha....yeah. Keyword being "supposed to do". Most of the time whoever is in charge will aggressively carve out a perimeter, then hunker down and wait for instructions. Then if they think they can chase off surrounding inhabitants, they will if they're fighting back (or if the commander just feels angry). A large ratio of the time, grunts on the ground won't be following protocol. Usually because their commander has been in hotzones before and knows protocol gets you killed, and the top brass will generally cover for them.

My understanding is that the alien weapons were designed to look like the pegs from Battleship, in another reference to the game. However, we can hypothesize an actual reason for why they arc rather than being a Gauss or other straight line high velocity weapon. It's fairly apparent that they alien ships can operate both above and below the water. While in the movie we mostly see them "hopping," this might be their equivalent of evasive maneuvers. If the ships can operate under water, this would make direct fire weapons useless, as the rounds would shatter against the surface of the water and have little to no penetration against submerged targets. However, the arced shots could act more like depth charges, going slow enough to not shatter on impact, and with the arc, sort of sinking onto a submerged target. It's a bit odd that the aliens didn't have more autonomous weapons like the "meatballs of doom," but maybe those are resource intensive when you can't count on something handy like radar (not having radar and satellite intelligence would completely change how modern warfare is fought, so might give some insight on why the alien tactics and weapons seem so odd, since apparently they can't be tracked on radar). As to what was up with the aliens, my take is that the ship that ran into the satellite wasn't just a communications ship, but also had the "diplomatic delegation" on board. Somewhere on the trip over something broke, which is why it wasn't able to avoid the satellite. This just left the small military security force sent with the diplomats, whose commander decided to try to fortify the area and phone home for further instructions once he realized the contact team was dead. Basically, a series of unfortunate incidents leading to a military person who was honestly probably just trying to get his people home without killing too many of the natives.

I would point you toward the Battleship New Jersey channel, the curator has basically said the Iowas would need years in a yard before they could be brought back into commission. For instance New Jersey’s engines are clapped out. Also, no one makes 16in projectiles anymore, so new factories would have to come online to supply them. I happened to take a tour of Missouri about a year after the movie came out, and half jokingly asked this Korean War vet of the ship, how long to get her back in fighting shape? He laughed at me. It would be more practical to pull from the mothball fleet with cruisers and destroyers, but many of the same problems would remain.

I learned that some battleships like the USS Missouri in real life were upgraded with modern (for 1980) Tomahawk missile launchers and four Phalanx CIWS miniguns for shooting down anti ship missiles and projectiles and modern radars, the same type used on the destroyers at the start of the movie. I remember seeing what looked like the CIWS Phalanx firing on the old battleship and im like that can't be right as that's a more modern weapon system, but sure enough I looked it up and they used these modernised upgraded battleships during the gulf war for artillery bombardment in operation desert storm in real life I think.

I was on the Iowa not too long ago, and while still a wonderful ship to tour, I'm pretty sure it's not going anywhere without some serious yard time, unless you are talking about using a tug boat. I think you're thinking of the National Defense Reserve Fleet, which is ships that have been mothballed but can be activated within 20 to 120 days to provide shipping during national military emergencies. However, these are not front line military ships; these are dry cargo, tanker, and military auxiliary ships. I feel the Regents were not hostile initially to Humanity as a whole, and that first contact was completely botched likely due to both sides mis-interpreting intentions. Humanity believing they were hostile from the onset when the Regents blew there version of a horn and the regents opening fire when they should have continued to remain passive indicating to human vessels that they meant no initial harm. They also had direct rules of warfare and engagement. They also had conduct and recognized non-hostiles or non threats. That's important. Also I'm pretty sure the recon group had survivors that survived the human attack and humanity has access to regent technology now. Although they were quite advanced, they don't seem to far off from human technological advancement that reverse engineering is impossible. The Shield system would be the vital tech and the drone remote tech along with the power armor. Sure there was some survivors with technical knowledge running around. If a 2nd movie ever was made they should try to have a 2nd contact with the regents again but this time with a battlefleet but non-aggressive showing they indeed are not trying to take over earth and requesting help as the actual threat follows them forcing Terran forces to side with the Regents as everything comes bearing down on top of them. Humanity during that time having mastered a little bit of the regent tech to create something strong enough to help fight back. Of course that's just a hopeful wish :p

My post film theory is that the 5% who did survive are taken prisoner but from their perspective, they're just slightly perturbed scientists who are like "dammit! First our comm ship and then you blow up your own communications! Now how are we gonna call home to report our findings! They are gonna come looking eventually." Eventually the prisoners and humanity are able to communicate and clear up the misunderstanding, ally themselves, and help share tech and repair the alien comm devices to call home and let them know we're friendly but initially did kill 95% of the Regents on first contact due to a miscommunication, and the Regents are like "Yeah we definitely want these inferior underdeveloped monkeys on our side if they could do that to us with kinetic sticks and stones. Screw being refugees, let's arm them and turn the tide of our war of extinction"

@@tbush6657 You pointed out a very important bit of info. of the survivors mentioning someone is going to come looking. Through the entire film of Battleship, the Regent soldiers and crews including technicians (scientist) showed empathy, only attacking hostile human combatants and allowing civilians to leave or even trying to calm down a situation to avoid a conflict, and showed actual acts of heroism such as rescuing the captured regent on the ship. Sure you had the occasional one do something different but considering the situation its no surprise a couple had enough. Yeah if these guys didn't report in or reported a incident such as the collision before entering Earths atmosphere its very likely someone is at the fleet, colony or homeworld is going to be like. Oh crap they got into trouble, should we send help? Send a rescue ship or send a larger ship to help in rescuing them if they are indeed in alien custody. The only other species in films that showed that kind of empathy but literally were running on fumes was the landsharks from Battle Los Angeles. More technologically inferior and far more brutal than the regents and were pretty much invading and killing anything in sight but it was out of sheer desperation and through the film we see the landsharks show acts of heroism and attempts to save their fellow soldiers that fell to human soldiers. Unlike the Regents the landsharks was on a one way trip do or die situation.

Ironically one of the proposed explanations to the Fermi Paradox is that intelligent life elsewhere might be primarily aquatic or amphibian, which these creatures seem to be. Most of Earth's surface is covered in water, and it's possible that other planets in the habitable zone have an even greater amount of surface water, which would make it more likely that their native species would be aquatic/amphibian. This would greatly limit our ability to contact said species because right now we're primarily sending and listening for radio transmissions or satellites, both of which took humans thousands of years to figure out and would be even harder for an aquatic/amphibious species to figure out since radio signals can't be transmitted through water and it might take significant effort for them to enter their planet's atmosphere, let alone escape from it.

A couple problems with that, though. First, its extremely difficult to perform metallurgy underwater. Since, you know... fire kind of needs oxygen, and water puts it out. If our own societal development is remotely close to the norm (which we have no way of knowing -- sample size of 1 is bad and we should feel bad) the ability to smelt raw ores into refined metals always produced huge advancements of technology, for every rung up the metalworking ladder. Brass and bronze to iron to steel and aluminum to titanium. And we know the Regents have extensive metallurgical knowledge, since they built spaceships capable of reaching Earth, and built exosuits that our bullets can't penetrate. By definition, this means they must have extensive land based facilities to work with for the processing of the ore and the construction of their ships. This, in turn, is highly suggestive that they have also dabbled in radio, if not necessarily taken a dive into the deep end with it. Sooner or later someone would put 2 and 2 together and realize that that radio thing that someone plays with for a hobby isn't just random noise, but a clear pattern meant as a communication form. Second, if a planet has too much water the chances are, from the physics of it, that the atmosphere is comprised primarily of hydrogen instead of nitrogen, along with a near-zero oxygen content. And that it would be well over 200 C, but the extreme pressure from it would keep the oceans liquid. I don't fully understand the science of it myself, but it seems to now be a prevailing theory that an ocean world as described in popular media, like Mon Calamar or Kamino from Star Wars would not be possible under physics as we understand it. The environment would simply be far too hostile for complex life forms to have any shot at becoming a technological society, and would most likely have more in common with the microbes that live in hot springs than with us.

35:17 Taking out zome of the turrets on that ship is REALLY impressive; To put that into perspective, that is an Iowa-class Battleship, last produced in WW2, I believe, as a response to the large battleships of the time made by Japan and Germany. While that is specifically the U.S.S. Missouri, it is the Sister ship of the U.S.S. Iowa, and the u.s.s. Iowa's turret was once hit by a Japanese Artillery shell. It left a _small dent_ in the turrets armor plating, and the captain replied to "get that trash off my deck" referring to the spent round. There are larger dents in the U.S.S. Iowa's Deck FROM WHERE THEIR OWN SPENT SHELLS LAND than there is from when THEY WERE STRUCK BY ARTILLERY FIRE. Those turrets are the size of SMALL BUNKERS and just as armored; to _destroy one entirely_ is some serious and impressive firepower. Clearly, whatever war these aliens were in was a tough one.

For all we know they might be mostly civilians with just some military. And we don't even know for sure that they were trying to send a message out, they might have been trying to send a message across earth telling us "hey, we're not hostile". He is an actual amputee who lost both legs to an IED in Baghdad in 2007, and instead of accepting a medical discharge, he chose to stay on active duty where he spent two years as the head of the Army Wounded Warrior Program and was later selected to command Fort Belvoir becoming the first Wounded Warrior to ever command an Army installation. Director Peter Berg read a National Geographic article about advances in artificial limbs that featured Gatson and decided to cast him based purely based on his story.

quick thing I want to point out about the Fermi Paradox: it took Voyager over 40 years to make it out beyond the heliopause, essentially "outside" of our solar system. it will be centuries before it reaches any habitable system, and if we don't have an orbital defense network by then, then I'd say we deserve to get obliterated by aliens. the biggest thing is that without FTL travel, it would take generations to reach any star system, so a battlefleet sent to conquer a planet that looks like it has primitive steam age may in fact arrive to find strategic nuclear warheads being fired at it from battlestations throughout the solar system, and it'll take centuries more for reinforcements to arrive, which will by then have to face a network of death stars. basically, unless there is a major leap forward in our understanding of physics, then interstellar warfare just is not worth the expenditure of resources.

Not only that, even if you spread out into the galaxy at near light speed... at some point the original world and the idea of expansion as part of some mission becomes meaningless for you. You think a planet 200 light years away gives a twat about Earth and the reason they founded the colony. It would take 400 years just to send a message to Earth and receive a message back. Earth might as well not exist from your perspective. So you're a hyper advanced planet and likely don't have population/resource issues and Earth is meaningless, why would you keep spreading to new planets? The idea that a civilisation would intentionally and systematically spread out into the universe is ludicrous unless FTL is possible.

I think the friend or foe category of the aliens is a bit wrong, I think it's more of a Combatant/Non-Combatant situation, that's why the kid went from red to green, the wheel of death saw him with a bat and helmet first so he was red, until the baseeball kid said dad which turned him green. and now that I think about it, the fact that it turned green after the kid said Dad means they understand our language and they could've communicated with us. There's inconsistencies on their rules of engagement too, they have a friend or foe system, but they destroyed the elevated highway which has a ton of civvies and definitely caused collateral. I think the aliens were an invading force and thinking that we had inferior technology, decided to just target military tech and combatants and possibly plan to enslave humanity once they've established a beach head and communications back to their planet. Wasn't that the vision that Hopper also saw when the alien held his head? edit:Also I fucking love that everytime you're talking about Rihanna, you call her by her song titles 😂😂😂

Listen, if the aliens didnt have ill intentions they shouldn't have commited the cardinal sin of earth based conflict, they messed with America's boats. That's a one way ticket to having a miniature sun detonated on your house.
