This was a rough one. Even 150 years later, you can feel the sting of unresolved justice. It must have been unbearable for the Cramer family and the rest of the community. Also noticeable was the disconnect between the rich and the not-rich. The not-guilty party was in terrible taste. Thank you Brief Case and History Profiles... I'll be giving you a follow.

This case is even sadder than most on this channel, due to the fates of the Cramers and the fact that the killer(s) were never brought to justice. While it's important to remember that we don't and can't have the whole story, it sounds from what we do know that three vile individuals got away with murder because the family of two of them were rich enough to afford top-end liars/lawyers...

I'd never heard of this fascinating case before. What a tragic story - not just the unsolved death of a young lady, but the suicide of both her parents. It struck me that there are parallels between this case and that of Mary Rogers. She was (it is said) a beautiful young woman who also worked in a cigar store. Her body was found in the Hudson River, and treated as a murder, which was also unsolved. Edgar Allan Poe knew Miss Rogers slightly, and based his short story The Murder of Marie Roget on the case, changing the names of those involved and the setting from NYC to Paris. He claimed he had worked out what happened purely by reading the newspaper accounts of the murder. However, according to one theory, the true killer was Poe himself! I personally don't agree with this idea, but it would be very clever on his part to blame someone else by writing a story about the crime to deflect attention away from him. By the way, thank you for such a great episode. Brief Case is always worth watching.

Thank you so much for covering this! I feel an unexplainable connection to this case since leaning about it. I live locally and pass her gravesite daily- I have brought her (and her family buried with her) flowers the past 2 summers around the anniversary of her death. I have been researching this case the past 2 years as I am compiling an extensive blog post. I have dug through historical records to find addresses for all locations involved and visited/ photographed them. I also have a 1871 print of the poem written about her with her portrait. I hope to have it posted in the next few months I do not know why I am so drawn to this, perhaps because we are close in age and from the same area, but I would like to bring some local awareness to the subject, as sexual violence and cover ups are ever present 140 years later. I am heartbroken she and her family never received the justice and answers they deserved.

Hands up those people who knew from the first time they said the family was the wealthiest in town that they would get off what ever charges there were. Twas ever thus and still goes on today. If you got money, even if you are caught with a smoking gun, you are innocent. I love the part about the defense saying there was no proof she didn't drown when the autopsy showed no water in her lungs or stomach. I wonder how much the jury got paid to come in with the verdict. Probably more than the bribed witnesses. Great video but always leaves me so angry at how the rich can get out of anything because of their money. Grrr! I feel so sorry for her parents but I wonder what happened to the younger sister? Poor girl probably suffered more than the parents did.

Jennie should have listened to her mother, and her mother should have chaperoned any visitations with the Malleys and her daughter herself since her cared a lot about her reputation, not trusting her daughter since she noticed that the first time spent with James didn't go so well. I don't why Jennie didn't know what James was up to herself at that point and avoided him after that. The evidence does appear that the witnesses were bribed and that the two young men got away with Jennie's murder. You could also say that the Malleys were also indirectly responsible for the deaths of her parents as well.
@Orphen42O
@Orphen42O 2 жыл бұрын
Jennie may have enjoyed being courted by a relative of one of the wealthiest men in New Haven. Even in the 20th Century, It was not acceptable for young ladies to be out all night . Jennie should have been "grounded" after the first incident. There is no reason to believe James' attentions were honorable. Jennie was possibly foolish and headstrong, but she would not have agreed to any intimacies before marriage. If a respectable girl such as Jennie was raped, it is possible she was murdered to cover up the crime. The Cramers probably blamed themselves for allowing her to see James .

Ok, so I didn't have any luck on your side, I couldn't find a Ruth Cramer of the right age in Connecticut (since I was working off very little info, it's possible she's there but I didn't find her), but with Jennie Cramer, sometimes the name was spelled Creamer, and her father's full name was Jacob Muller Cramer and was from Denmark or sometimes Germany and naturalized in 1860 - the year of Jennie's birth, while her mother was from Holstein, I'm guessing both parents were from the Schleswig-Holstein area and that's why the uncertainty (Germany's boundaries varied a lot in the 1800s) I found another Jacob Cramer (1843 - 1876) also from Germany about 25 miles away in Middletown who may or may not be connected, and a third (1825-1886) in Hamden, New Haven, with wife Elizabeth. Random side note that may be relevant, it was such an Irish immigrant area at the time that his naturalization was typed and had the United Kingdom of Britain and Ireland parts crossed out and replaced with Denmark. Maybe this is helpful, or if not it was a way for me to kill time.

What a tragic story and another gross example of someone buying their way out of trouble. And the story was doubly horrifying through the narration of History Profiles. Have you seen him? His hobby is tying streetlamps into knots. Another great case, thanks.

Just subbed to History Profiles… I haven’t watched this video yet, & I’m looking forward to it, but if Brief Case recommends this other channel & lets him narrate this crime story, that’s good enough for me :)Thank you both, and keep up the amazing work! 👏🏻😘 Edit: It was as great as I figured it would be…I loved his voice, accent, word choices, & delivery, as I do yours, BC!! Amazing collab! About the case? Unjust & tragic as so many are…her less fortunate ($$-wise)family received NO justice for her murder, & the more fortunate (again, $$-wise) killer walked away scot-free, & got to live his life as a do-over. Her life was cruelly taken, while his life continued on, barely even interrupted. Awful! 😞

It would be interesting to use DNA evidence now if any trace is left in the body cavity as the physicians who examined her had said she had been violated.
@thelogicaldanger

Yeah, unfortunately if the DNA sample wasn't refrigerated, it would all be deteriorated at this point. Since they had no idea DNA existed at that time, they didn't preserve samples. After DNA was discovered in the 50's, then blood and seman samples were often preserved from unsolved crimes, under the hope that someday there would be technology to match DNA (and many old crimes were solved once there was the technology to match DNA.)

This episode was especially eerie for me. I used to shop at Malley's in New Haven. I can still hear the jingle ending with "The Edward Malley Company". That dry goods store grew into a multi-floor department store in the heart of downtown New Haven. Also, one of my mother's favorite places was Savin Rock in nearby West Haven. It became a much loved amusement park and included a nice boardwalk and a still-popular indoor-outdoor restaurant. Chilling.

Jennie's Mom, didn't want her residing in the family residence, because of a perceived negative influence in a younger daughter. I hope she wasn't too much younger. With Dad already a suicide, Mom decides to take her own life too. Hopefully the younger daughter wasn't so beautiful, that she was over indulged & trained to rely solely on her good looks.

What a horrific ending. My brother killed himself as well, and that event has always tormented my entire family to this day. I can't imagine how the younger sister of Jenny Kramer felt and handled all of this tragedy. Even though these events of history are but of that.... history, I feel so much grief for the deceased and their surviving family members of their days/ life. The Kramers were wealthy, but no amount of money can make a person happy, especially when they have lost so many loved ones and have lived through so much devastation. Wonderful narration by the speaker, and I will subscribe to his channel as well. Thank you for this horrible narrative story. Even though it is so sad, it makes me feel that my one tragedy is in no comparison to the feelings and events that Kramer's family members had to go through.

What a very sad case. I have to agree with the defence lawyer that the prosecution didn't explain how Jennie ingested the arsenic. So, she didn't drown, while she may have been on her way to dying of arsenic poisoning, that isn't necessarily what killed her. So how did she die? And, to be fair, why would the Malleys poison her? I can understand killing a rape victim so that she doesn't testify against you but poisoning doesn't sound like a likely choice of murder method. I'm wondering if the doctors who performed the post mortem missed some blunt force trauma.

There is much evidence to point to Walter being the mastermind behind it, to try to save his family’s reputation. James was not the brightest. I believe Jennie perhaps threatened to go to the police with what James had done to her. Walter had access to arsenic at his family’s store, while in school had seen an autopsy on a body that had died due to arsenic poisoning, the strange occurrences around his mother’s death and his inherited will from her, etc. He was very well educated and from a life of privilege.
