@Teun de Heer I kid you not, it's my favorite SW movie. Probably because 8 and 9 were so bad that they tainted the magic of 4-6 simply by association. And the prequels rank somewhere between the original trilogy and the Disney trilogy.

"We don't serve their kind here." "It's not like they're going to order a drink." That was the point. They take up space for paying customers.
@PaperbackWizard7 жыл бұрын
Is that really the point? Or does the bartender have a deal with the droid-stealing Jawas for a cut of however much money they make from selling the droids they steal outside the cantina while the droids' owners are inside getting drunk and/or sliced in half with a lightsaber? Now that "Tales from Mos Eisley" isn't canon anymore, we can safely theorize that the cantina is just a place for people to come to drink and get their property taken from them. It's exactly the kind of behavior you'd expect in a "wretched hive of scum and villainy".
@A-Duck4 жыл бұрын
Then the correct phrase would have been "We don't allow their kind in here." No matter how you slice it, it was a dumb thing to say.
@figrindantatooine3 жыл бұрын
@@PaperbackWizard I really like this idea. I wish that was the reason to it. I always thought the Bartender would turn out to be an old Clone and he hated Droids because he had to fight them and his pals were killed by Droids.
@AnachronismNoir6 ай бұрын
@@figrindantatooine See that's what I always thought! The dude was around during the Clone Wars, he would know how awful the droids were back then. He was alive in the shift to make droids feel pain, but still probably got swept up in some attack where he lost people. He acts like the kind of guy that lost people. It makes way more sense when you acknowledge that everyone over thirty has clear memories of how terrible the Clone Wars was for the galaxy.

What about the clones. We're they not essentially a slave army?
@charliepotatoes0019 жыл бұрын
+Papa Wheely Actually there is some debate about the clone army being child soldiers since they age faster than most normal people. Imagine born into service and dying in combat by 15 or dying of old age before your thirty because clones age three times faster than everybody else. Remember Bolba Fett was the only clone to age normally and he was a child when the clone wars started and saw his father die at the hands of a Jedi before he was a teen.

The Cantina scene never made any sense to me, Droids are just tools in this galaxy; why's the bartender all "We don't serve their kind here". Well no Mr. Bartender, I didn't expect you to serve my dictionary and my toolbox, but can I at least bring them into the bar with me?
@GHOSTpssrby9 жыл бұрын
Beelzeboogie Well, a lot of businesses in real life don't want people around wasting space if they aren't going to buy anything. They're taking up room that other people who will buy something could use. Perhaps that's the reason.
@Bluecho49 жыл бұрын
RemiVicodin Granted they could argue "I need my property with me, because I'm afraid it'll get stolen in this wretched hive". On the other hand, the bartender could easily retort "my bar, my rules; I reserve the right to refuse service to anyone I feel like". And the main characters didn't HAVE to go to that specific cantina. There are other places they can look to hire a ship from.
@petrahansen70679 жыл бұрын
+Beelzeboogie If u go back to the original R. McQuarrie 1970's concept art in the 70's, to TPM(Ep.1), u see that most protocol&astro droids like CP30 &R2-D2 are usually neutral-functional or harmless. But they can also be sinister devices used by the Empire or the Hutts to spy on bar patrons or worse. Usually, Lucas emphasized the Hoth Imperial probe droid or Darth Maul's probe droids threatening nature w/menacing, overly synthesized droid voicing. But in fairness to the bartender he probably never saw either of those movies in 1976 when the cantina scene was shot. Also, there probably was more than one guy playing the cantina bartender, making droid cantina service policies that much harder to enforce consistently. Welp, hope that helped.

3:38 "Why would you program droids to scream?" Actually I think that would work as a much more effective "SOMETHING IS WRONG" alarm. Like when something malfunctions on your computer (ex: a USB port stops work), there is a beep or other sound to alert you, so you can try and fix the problem. The droids' screams serve the same purpose, except that it catches the attention of their owners/users better, because people instinctively recognize that type of sound as a call for help or a warning about danger.

Vader actually wasn’t cool with serving the Emperor. When Palpatine cyborgized Anakin, he specifically used outdated and ill fitting parts so Vader would be too clumsy and distracted by the itching and pain to rebel against him. Most of those buttons on his suit either kill him if he doesn’t press them at regular intervals or kill him when pressed and he’s too hurt to risk undergoing upgrades without the Emperor using the Force to keep him alive throughout the process.
@Justmyhandle9 жыл бұрын
This has all now made me legitimately curious to see a full-droid lightsaber wielder in Star Wars (Grievous doesn't count, he was a cyborg like Vader). Imagine a totally mechanical character with no name or sense of identity. He can't blame it all on his programming because he doesn't know who or what created him or how his coding works. He just wakes up one day in a pile of junk, gradually puts himself together, and wanders the wasteland until he finds a dead force user and gets curious. Picking up and tinkering with the lightsaber, the silent droid eventually figures it out and discovers he has dormant combat protocols. Later, he finds a holocron at the sight of a battle between Force users and collects data on the history of Jedi. Rather than choosing a side, he goes off in search of his purpose and what it means to connect with the Force, sad to learn that he can never use it. So, what next? He goes all Bicentennial Man and embarks on a journey across the galaxy, having different experiences with those he meets and helps, including other droids, all the while seeking some technology or other means to complete a bio-mechanical evolution that would allow him to possibly tap into the Force. He would be like the Vision of Star Wars, an innocent and unique creation that comes to understand more about life than most sentient organic creatures. He would have a face as emotionless as any droid, but a soul like no other :)

IG-88 was a droid bounty hunter that kinda just said, "ehh fuck it, I'm smarter than being just an average droid," and up and built his own robot life. That would be a cool anthology movie, or pair him with Boba Fett.
@Justmyhandle8 жыл бұрын
Carson Mcfuggins Very interesting, that hadn't occurred to me. I would never have the droid character meet his creator though. He may find clues to it, but ultimately some aspects of his origins would remain open to the imagination. He wouldn't be the only one of his kind like the original Frankenstein's monster either, but rather the last. You could say he belonged to a once plentiful assembly line of highly advanced hacker droids, built by an unknown extinct race beyond the Outer Rim. As he gradually evolves from machine to an organism that can tap into the Force, he cares less about where he came from and focuses more on where he's going. He doesn't require a name or to be considered by others as "alive" or "human". He simply wants to understand what he can become and what the Force itself means. He does however, over time, come to feel something for the lives of others.

Droids can't drink or eat anything, so the bar tender doesn't want someone hogging up floor space that isn't buying anything. Go to a restaurant and just sit around in the booths and tables without buying anything. Also, a good reason for programming droids to scream is to tell the owner that something is wrong, like a blue screen on your computer. R2 was shot (he shorted out and needed repairs) and he screamed, letting everyone know that he needed help.

Corn Bread Other droids appear sentient too.in KOTOR I T3-M4 seems to give a rude response to you asking him questions,we don't know because all he says it beep boop and the like.HK-47 was fully capable of independent thought and named organisms as "meatbags".On Korriban a Sith Assassin Droid says he values all life and you can help him leave Korriban,this wouldn't be possible without sentience,as he was programmed to kill with question,yet he is a pacifist.In the Clone Wars series droids mention that they are "Independent Thinkers",showing they were sentient,though they say older CIS models relied on a mainframe computer,so those ones weren't,though the computer may have been.In the EU the red droid next to R2 is force sensitive and purposefully damages himself because he foresaw Luke wouldn't be able to defeat the empire with him,but he only coild with R2.An old CIS droid who painted himself red called "Mr. Bones" is also sentient because he obviously deserted the CIS since they died out long ago during his time,and he'd have to be sentient to disobey orders.

@ChickenWilickers10 жыл бұрын
The British Sabre If that's the case, which I feel might be the case, then its still my case. We don't need free will (in the freedom vs. determinism sense) to feel free, and that our happiness and functionality isn't affected by its existence one way or the other. Extending this idea towards societies, I feel that if societies were to take away certain "freedoms", but we never came into a situation where we would need those freedoms, then it would be effectively the same as having those freedoms. This informs my view on certain authoritarian regimes which trade off political freedoms for economic prosperity. Please note my usage of "feel", I'm not arguing with a certainty one way or the other, and I'm a little tired atm so grammar/coherence might be lacking.

And pain was so that they wouldn't do something stupid like walk into a mulching machine to get to their tasks because it's the shortest path. Counter that!

The droids are treated like they treat them because of Asimov. The constant debate about artificial life (if it is actually life) and intelligence in his novels is key inspiration to the way the droids behave. In my opinion, at least.

Umm Darth Vader is not Black. And Lando was cool. He really had very little choice but to betray Han and his friends. Vader threatened to destroy his entire city. I am not saying what he did was right but it is no easy decision. Also, of course they programmed droids to be slaves. Its common sense. What do you think your smartphone is? This was pretty funny though.

What was that at the end about a hack? If anyone knows, please respond.
@bbofun10 жыл бұрын
Are you referring to the "the whole series was made by a hack" line? "Hack" can mean a creative artist who creates low-quality, derivative work, but is, nonetheless, successful. Thus, some say Lucas is a hack- although others disagree.
@kitsunekyubino934510 жыл бұрын
oh. Okay, thank you.

@TheThreeHeadedDragon10 жыл бұрын

@bbofun10 жыл бұрын
Well, hack somewhat implies that they write/create this way on a regular basis, or have become known- which means, at least, some level of success. Artists who create low-quality or derivative work who are unsuccessful are just ignored, rather than called hack. Uwe boll, for example, is a hack (IMHO)- the guy who directs a student film that's just as bad as House of the Dead isn't- at least, not yet. But that's just my feeling.

Emotions in R2-astromech units are actually a bug in the system that normally need to be refurbished. The only reason R2D2 is such an effectively badass droid is because his emotions. Imagine R2 as the grumpy, grizzled, jaded veteran who has seen it all, but can repair a ship using a socket wrench and a toothpick, R2 is fearless and yes he feels pain and gets messed up every once in a while, but he soldiers through.

@KriegsMeister2710 жыл бұрын
I agree with all points except one, the droids don't "feel" pain, they just communicate damage in a way more relatable to organics. For example, when chewbacca is carrying C3PO and bangs his head on the Falcon, 3PO could say something like, "Please be delicate as any jarring trauma can lead to my servo-gears being dislodged which would render my computing systems inoperable," or "OUCH, that hurt." Or another example the famous R2-D2 scream, all it is, is just R2 sensing a threat to itself and others and is just conveying that information in the most primal way possible. The same reasoning could be extended to emotions as well, but it made my brain hurt pondering about programming emotions and whether or not the droids actually feel them as humans, or are just input-output programs of stimuli resulting in emotions or are our emotions exactly that, just simple programming.

I'm not a Starwars fan, but droids tend to be machines, I don't see how they have feelings or how they are called slaves. They are tools, like a toaster or a computer.
@OwlQueenAnimations8 жыл бұрын
Catherine Stonehouse because unlike machines irl, droids in star wars are sentient beings
@catherinestonehouse2988 жыл бұрын
Then starwars takes place in a different universe than Earth?
@OwlQueenAnimations8 жыл бұрын
Catherine Stonehouse well obviously it doesn't take place in the real world, but Earth is never mentioned or visited in star wars either. but you never know, we could get to a point in technological advancement where this does become a real life issue. also, comparing a sentient android to a toaster is like comparing a human to a jellyfish.
@catherinestonehouse2988 жыл бұрын
In order for a machine to have feelings they still have to be programmed to feel that way. Also I assumed that star wars was in the same universe as earth because star trek is. It would make sense, just saying.
@OwlQueenAnimations8 жыл бұрын
Catherine Stonehouse well yeah, it's assumed that a fictional earth is somewhere far away, because it takes place "a long time ago in a galaxy far far away", but it's obviously not the real world, so they can have fictional technology like sentient machines and lightsabers. it's not really whether or not they're sentient that's the issue, it's pretty much canon that they are

The most reasonable idea is that in a universe as dangerous as SW you need robots to get the hell outta the way. Setting them to an overreacting level of selfpreservation also makes Artoo a heroic droid because he doesn't have any sense of fear in combat. Although Degobah was a lil scary it does have a Dark Side nexus on it.
