People seriously need to watch the show and stop blindly judging it just because it has religious themes and motifs. If they did, they’d realize that it’s not shitting on the religion, rather a specific sect of fundamentalists who are guided by nothing but their narcissism. Islam has fundamentalists. So do Christians. So do Jews. Every religion has a small group of weirdos that the vast majority of regular followers don’t associate with for good reasons. IMO, that’s all the LDS had to do, while possibly condemning the real Ron and Dan’s actions, and we wouldn’t be having this “controversy.”

I think that’s the point. I have watched it. I understand that some of the story is fictionalized. They state as much in the show. But a lot of it is true. Mormons did practice polygamy and only stopped because of pressure from the government. Although the church claims a “convenient” timing of a revelation that the practice was to end. I’m not sure when the temple practices of symbolizing cutting one’s throat stopped but these too are accurate. I’m a former member of the church. I am not a Mormon but wanted to see Andrew Garfield as an LDS member. He delivers another affecting and brilliant performance. He’s playing this as respectful of the church but he’s asking questions about his evil can occur there. I’ve watched first three episodes. I do wonder how real all the religious talk as a constant element of a family’s day is. That to me smacks of a cult where cult leaders keep you so busy with church activities you have no time to do anything else. That’s how you keep cult members in the cult. And I do t think Mormons know their history of the evils in the past that the church ordered and condoned like Mountain Meadows Massacre. It would be a deal breaker for me. So the church obviously covers that up.

I have to say no to the last bit. Having been born in Salt Lake and a member there are a lot of early church history that I didn't know until recently, and I'm almost 30. Its more of ignoring that people will be people and make mistakes or serious morally corrupt decisions and hiding the bad
@mirlo51092 жыл бұрын
When I was in seminary*, around 2018, maybe 2019, there was a teacher who taught us about the Moutain Meadows Massacre, though I doubt that was the norm, or even in the lesson plan. But we were taught a twisted version, where it was a rogue group that led the massacre, and the leadership tried to stop it but was too late, effectively deflecting the blame away from the church. It was viewed as a horrible tragedy, but not the fault of the organization. Most members might know a few tidbits but are largely oblivious to the real history of the faith. Generally, the church tries to cover up the negative aspects of its history (or present), but with everything being so accessible on the internet, they can't deny everything the way they used to, so when things come up they've had to invent excuses to try and quickly brush everything back under the rug. Whatever awful thing happens, they never blame the church, and a common saying you'll hear to avoid taking responsibility is that while the church is perfect, man is not. And if it's not something they can dismiss that easily, then you're told that we can't understand it now, but it'll all be explained in the afterlife, and to "doubt your doubts" before you doubt your faith. They teach a lot of thought stopping techniques to keep you from thinking too closely about anything negative you might hear or experience and teach you to avoid and distrust non-lds sources. *religious class for highschoolers on school days. There're grades, tests, and you even receive a certificate of graduation. generally expected of 9th-12th graders to attend, each year covers a different book of scripture
@Mamataur2 жыл бұрын
People in general dont like being wrong or called out for bad behavior. Its worse in groups; corporations, churches, teams ect,. It doesn't excuse such events or behaviors. The most everyday people can do about it is not let it be forgotten and put pressure on those people/groups to take responsibility and a chance to make ammends and change themselves for the better. To learn from mistakes in life is, should, be our goals in life. And to not let ourselves become desensitized to the wronging we may cause others or the pain, hurt, and even death we leave in our wakes as we try to live our lives to the fullest.
@skylark12502 жыл бұрын
@@mirlo5109 you are right that it’s much easier to research the history of the church and the people involved in its founding and their involvement in murders of innocent people. Brigham Young ended up with the wealth of the Fancher Baker wagon train from Arkansas when he had then viciously murdered to obtain their $100,000 in gold and cattle. Follow the money. Young finished his temple in Salt Lake City and gave his favorite wife some of the belongings stripped from the dead including one of the four finely carved carriages and fine jewelry. The 900 cattle were branded with the church brand. The attackers ransacked the wagons and had their wives come out and strip the bodies of the females and that clothing was tithed to the church, blood soaked and all. All the murderers made off with horses and wagons; John D. Lee took one of the carriages as he gave Young a ride in it. So historically it would point to Young definitely being involved. The letter stating “don’t bother the immigrants” was likely a coverup after the fact. John D. Lee would lose a wife and a daughter I believe in the flood of 1863, the same flood that altered much of the terrain at Mountain Meadows and resulted in trees disappearing and the creeks altered in route. It’s a tragic event that needs to be taught and talked about by Mormons. Young was talking up violence against “Gentiles” just before the murders but I think he saw the great wealth of this wagon train as it moved through Salt Lake City and decided that this was the train to attack. It was the largest wagon train to come through Utah territory. Though the church claims children under 7 were soared 38 children were murdered that day, some in the arms of their mothers. Court testimony stated two young girls were raped before being murdered. Such terrorism and evil committed by a group of church members is difficult to understand. Apparently John D Lee slept well that night. So it’s really hard to escape the cold indifference of these murders for wealth. All the murderers took wagons and horses and other personal effects including gold watches and clothing. So it’s hard for me to believe that fear of an invasion by the army had anything to do with these brutal murders. Children had their heads smashed against wagon wheels. We know how some died due to the forensics forced by the state when remains were accidentally dug up during a refurbishment of the memorial site which is owned by the church. The church tried to cover up this disinterment but the state law required forensics to step in. About 29 skeletons were disinterred and required a “cause of death.” The harrowing details are brutal and savage and should be a deal breaker for any Mormon. Young was no Saint.

It's a really good series. A little heavy-handed in parts and personally not a fan of the detailed flashbacks of the Mormon church founders (might be because I've seen The Book of Mormon too many times - all the silly songs popping in my head during those scenes, but I thought the flashbacks were at odds with the more noir style of the rest of the series). Andrew Garfield's acting is exceptional, really on point and very moving. The rest of the actors are doing a great job too, the editing managed a suspenseful pace also.

Why Krakauer's book is described as controversial eludes me. Everyone with more than 2 brain cells knows about the history and problems with Mormonism. Even though men are told they're allowed to always tell women what to do, some of those men, when they have female daughters get appalled at the thought of what this will mean for their daughters as they know that there are plenty of really awful men. Any way of "thinking" that instructs you to NOT think should make you think very hard.

I go to the church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints it's so sad what happened
@KidsandKittens2172 жыл бұрын
@Blue Bunny Books I agree. And here is the problem: When I was a young mother with small children my Bishop told me that every good member of the Church must obey the Bishop no matter what he wants you to do, including committing murder or adultery. He wrote this Directive down and gave it to me. I thought, at the time, that he must be a corrupt leader. I thought it could not be Church Doctrine so I took it to each successive Church authority all the way up to the General Authorities in Salt Lake. I asked them if this was really Church Doctrine. They refused to disavow it. They would not answer the question. Refusing to disavow it means that it is left to stand as Church Doctrine, in the same way as when the U.S. Supreme Court declines to hear a case and lets the lower authority’s pronouncement stand. The General Authorities left this corrupt and cruel man in his position of Authority. The General Authorities told me to drop my concerns so that they could “get back to doing the Lord’s work.” Don’t you see there’s a problem with this? Isn’t it The Lord’s Work to put a stop to abusive Priesthood Leaders? So why wouldn’t the General Authorities do anything about this man? They had everything in writing and proof of this being his directive. Do you see how dangerous such a Doctrine is? In fact, it is so dangerous that many, many people have been murdered by the authority of Church officials over the years. I urge you to read the evidence. One book is “Blood of the Prophets: Brigham Young and the Mt Meadows Massacre” by Will Bagley. Murder and taking other men's wives (adultery) has been historically practiced in the Church. This is why Ron and Dan Lafferty behaved in this manner. It is because it is what the Prophets before them did. In fact The Book of Mormon teaches murder is okay if God tells you in your head to do it.1 Nephi 4:9-13. Historically, the Church has taught that a woman having sex with more than 1 man is not adultery if God tells the men to do it (women are not allowed to receive such a revelation). See D&C 132 "she shall be destroyed." D&C 132 is still part of the Holy Canon of the Church is it not? Joseph Smith had revelations that allowed him to do what his libido desired. Have you read "The Council of Fifty" papers at the website Joseph Smith papers? There's no doubt in my mind that it was these Church teachings along with the lack of interest by General Authorities to remove abusive men from leadership positions that led to the murder of Brenda and her baby.

I can't help but wonder if they even had a list to begin with. I know they were going to see that 1 Bishop or something next and they weren't there or something and that's why they didn't do it. Or maybe it's just when they got there the house was empty. I have no freaking clue but I think they just did it and used the list as an excuse to justify it in their own head. Because she was an individual and didn't fall into the craziness of the family they had to come up with a way to kill her and blame it on God told me so

I'm a member of the LDS church and the culture has changed a lot since 40 years ago. Women have much more freedom and are not taught to be obedient to men anymore. Domestic violence is taken much more seriously by the country as a whole, including the church. I'm not sure if we ever did the throat slicing motion in the temple but we certainly haven't done that since I've been going. Church leaders did encourage members not to ask about or look into church history for a long time, but they don't do that anymore. Members can research as much as they want about the early members of the church and draw their own conclusions about them. We certainly don't talk about our religion as much as the people in the show do. That was so annoying! Everything they said was a scripture reference and I just wanted to yell at the TV to shut up! Most LDS members sound like normal people, and we don't call Native Americans "Lamanites" anymore either. That's racist.

Why is it okay for some groups to call out misrepresentation and not others? Some minorities are praised for standing up for themselves and misrepresentation that happens in the media and others are shamed. I don't understand.
@KidsandKittens2172 жыл бұрын
@Tambre Smith Why is it racist to call Native Americans “Lamanites”? The Book of Mormon says they are Lamanites. Are you saying the Book of Mormon is racist? And, yes, I realize the Church has rewritten the Book of Mormon. I have my copy of the Book of Mormon from before they changed it. It says in 2 Nephi 5:21 “And he had caused the cursing to come upon them, yea, even a sore cursing, because of their iniquity. For behold, they had hardened their hearts against him, that they had become like unto a flint; wherefore, as they were white, and exceeding fair and delightsome, that they might not be enticing unto my people, therefore the Lord God did cause a skin of blackness to come upon them.” So, are you referring to that verse to say The Book of Mormon is racist?

I am sure that the existence of Warren Jeffs group, even though those folks are more extreme, along with the existence of The Kingston Order have not done the world perception of the Mormon Church any favors either. And, FX should have done a much better job in making sure that the family at the center of this mini series was portrayed more accurately, especially Brenda. Inaccurate portrayals of key real life folks in film has happened multiple times in Hollywood. It has happened with the 2004 film, TROY with the inaccuracte portrayal of Helen of Troy. And, it happened with the early 2000s film about the murder of Tina Brandon entitled, Boys Don't Cry, too.
@lolyfe55572 жыл бұрын
How could we interview anyone from Troy? And most Mormons won't speak to media or anyone trying to create anything that could be portrayed as slightly negative regarding their church/faith. If you're unwilling to speak on it at the time it happened, don't come to criticize it when someone comes to tell the story.

My husband grew up just down the street from where this horrific crime took place. It was perpetrated by two religious fanatics and every religion has fanatics in it. This show skewed a lot of the religion to paint a picture that people who do not know the religion will take as facts. Get accounts from the people who lived this horrible crime, not someone trying to profit by it.
