In case you're ever in need of an explanation of radioactive stuff in future projects, here's a little info on the radon. I won't comment as to whether or not the radon levels are at present safe, but radon is dangerous because of alpha decay, not gamma. This seems counterintuitive at first because alpha particles are "big" (in the atomic sense) and charged, which means they don't penetrate well and thus are actually fairly safe to be around (this is why some smoke detectors use a small americium 241 source and that's fine to have in your home). Gamma on the other hand is basically just a verrrrrrrrrry high energy wave that passes through damn near everything and can very easily collide with a DNA molecule or two and cause serious damage. The big caveat is that, because radon is a gas, it can be inhaled. And while alpha particles aren't too dangerous when they're outside the body, all the reasons that they can't penetrate become big problems when the radiation is already inside of you. So suffice it to say, it's kinda hard to argue that any amount of detectable radon is "safe" (and before some smarty pants replies to me about hormesis, the jury is still out on that).
@KathrynsWorldWildfireTracking Жыл бұрын
A very valuable comment. Also - Radon gas inhalation is the second most common cause of lung cancer in the USA! (Mostly affecting people who own basements/cellars in radon-tainted geographic areas - which is much of the USA.) If you have any part of your home underground - you NEED to see if your region has radon - and get a detector! DO NOT BUY A HOME - without reading the radon report. You have the right to know if simple cracks in your basement's concrete are going to release odorless gas that will kill your family or not!

They were at the hospital and the hospital had informed the health department who'd requested everyone who was in the tub go to the ER immediately. I went there and they looked at my skin for a few seconds and gave me Cipro, the antibiotic they use for anthrax. I went into a hot tub once and it gave me some type of alergic reaction that made me chronically itchy it’s been years it still hasn’t gone away, I think it damaged my nerves. The chlorine was so strong it burned my eyes and dyed my bathing suit and shorts I had on. I’m pretty sure it was the chlorine and other chemicals that caused this. I immediately rinsed off at the locker room then I took a full shower at my hotel room and It was just too late the itch had already started. That was like 4-5 years ago, I went to the white Mountains in Maine to climb Mount Washington and my skin was all red like a had a rash and looked like a type of sunburn, I ended up having to slather hydrocortisone all over me and I took Benadryl, I still do. I over did it with the hydrocortisone cream and it stopped working and the itch became more intense It was like I had to detox off of the cream. I’m still itchy and It’s worse at night because I have no self control when I’m asleep I’ll scratch my skin right off and wake up with bloody fingernails. I can’t have anything sitting on my skin under my clothes like hair or lint it will drive me crazy, I have to carry around a lint roller. I have to shave my whole body it’s a nightmare! All from taking a quick dip in a hot tub! It’s like the chlorine damaged my nerves so now I feel even the slightest touch against my skin it’s like it made me ultra sensitive but not in a cool super power type way but an annoying life ruining type way. I have literally thought about just ending it all just to stop the itching when it’s been at it’s worse. The only answer I have gotten from Drs is Chronic Dermatitis. It’s like a non-diagnosis.

One time was during the pandemic which caused it to be a major hassle to get and caused KZbin to remove my video promoting the use of ivermectin, for scabies. This may sound horrible but for my Telehealth visit I bought a 20 dollar microscope that connects to a phone or laptop and zoomed in on my skin to prove I had scabies so they wouldn't think I was lying and wanted it for covid. I have no rash or dryness at all so it’s hard to get them to believe me because there is nothing to look at except my scratch marks. They wanted me to try depression medication they tried to tell me it was psychosomatic and all in my head. I’m about to buy a microscope. I suspected dust mites so I covered my rug in diameticus earth or whatever it’s called and I got a new bed and all to rule out mites and I’m still itchy and I have no bites or rash. I also got a memory foam mattress and had it sealed to make sure they can’t get me if they are around at all. I have been on antibiotics many times for other things since it’s happened and it’s never helped the only thing antibiotics does is mess up my stomach and kill all my good bacteria it takes me months to be able to drink milk and eat cheese again after a round of antibiotics and I take pro-pre-postbiotics on the regular those don’t help much until after I stop taking antibiotics, it just happened to me from a sinus infection. I have come to the conclusion that the bleach killed my micro biome and I am over run with yeast or something like that. I do get frequent yeast infections and have been susceptible to them in the past in my mouth and my milk ducts while breast feeding. I also have hyperhydrosis so my skin is always a bit damp especially my hands and feet so I’m susceptible to fungus like athletes foot, ring worm and jock itch. I at first thought that’s what it was because it’s kind of a burning itch like athletes foot so I sprayed my whole body with and used antifungle creams and that didn’t work or help either.

Believe it or not understanding radiation doses is very simple. There are a few different units of measurement (usually Gy (gray) or mSv (millisievert)) and if you search for one you can find a conversion chart that will also show you the effects of the dose. From the screenshot you have it had a DCF (dose conversion factor) of 5 mSv and anything up to 10 mSv is considered safe. If its 10x that or 100 mSv then no immediate effects but increase long-term risk of cancer.

@@MorbidMidnight I'm not going to be a ton of help here, but I thought I’d relay to you what I did find. On the wikipedia page for Grays (unit), there is a table on the different sorts of units related to radioactivity. Here’s the link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Radiation_related_quantities First off, this isn’t at all my specialty so please take it with a grain of salt, but it looks to me that the units you were finding your answers in measure the rate of decay of the material, as opposed to the radioactivity absorbed by the material’s surroundings (I would have looked for grays myself and apparently had no luck). It _could_ be that since Radon is a fairly unique element, being both gaseous and radioactive, that its properties are considered more meaningful when measured as becquerels, and the like. But again, I’m not at all certain. Regardless, thank you for trying to find answers and for admitting when they were not forthcoming. You're not wrong, it was. The bacteria was in the cooling tower of the air conditioner, and it spread through the whole ventilation system. I saw a documentary a long time ago about it, and it did mention actual standing water in the conditioners, which just made it worse. He said "water tower" in this video, but it was actually the air conditioner cooling tower.

@@ACE53621 thanks. I had a close encounter with it. On a security detail half of the men were put into an old building the rest were in other accommodations. The men in the building got sick.

Well, I lucked out in the 70's. Lots of private hot tubs. Didn't end up in bacterial soup. Do/don't the chemicals knock that out? Or, perhaps, in display tubs, they DON'T use chemicals, thus causing the bacterial growth? How many days does it take to turn to "spoiled soup?"
@Itried20takennames Жыл бұрын
The chemicals and maintenance should stop most Legionella, but my guess is that because the tubs were just for “display” that inexperienced staff may have thought there was little need to keep up with testing and treatment regimen. I certainly don’t know for sure.

That's why a lot of apartment communities filled in their hot tubs. Too much nastiness! I dated an apartment manager, and they told me to never, ever get in an apartment hot tub. Eww.

Thanks for the informative video. I don't know why, but for some reason I thought the cause of Legionnaires disease in the northeastern US was from the Legionnaire bacteria being in an air conditioning system. I guess my memory is wrong.
@MorbidMidnight Жыл бұрын
Air conditioners are one of the most common spreaders of Legionella bacteria, so you are correct. There was actually an outbreak in Michigan just a couple weeks after the one in this video that killed 4 and sickened 26 people that was spread in a very similar fashion to the Bellevue-Stratford hotel, that largely overshadowed this incident in the news cycle.
@kimmuckenfuss2284 Жыл бұрын
@@MorbidMidnight that's probably the incident I was thinking of because it was definitely a long time ago. Thanks for confirming that.

I'm a bit confused. Were display hot tubs tested by customers before this happened? Did they need to bring a towel with them?

MOST interesting! LOVE the infectious disease angle. I worked as a nurse in an ID unit, & I cannot recall ever having a legionella patient, but this was in the early Noughties. OTHER deaths related to baths & hot water: you mentioned the Roman baths of Bath (AQVAE SVLIS) in Somerset England 🇬🇧. The public could swim in the baths, during my lifetime, but I'm not sure about now. No, swimming is not allowed, but a KZbinr, & Extinction Rebellion climate cult fanatics have swum in the water & survived! And there was a case of a swimmer, a girl, picking up a waterbourne infection in this case meningitis, in the mid 1970s. She died. From then on, swimming was not allowed. BUT was it a girl or a young woman; the precise age wasn't mentioned. And this is typical of the paranoid, litigious fear ridden era we live in; as meningitis is more a disease of the young. The only cases I've known & been involved in the treatment of, were young people, & you can be vaccinated against it. SO why not allow older adults to swim in it ie over 30s? THERE are no written reports of mysterious deaths of Roman Britons dying after bathing either. THE Bath (the Somerset 🏴 one) Connection again: this was reported in the British media, & the BJN (The British Journal of Nursing) on their examples of malpractice page. The first page I turned to LOL. A male patient who had undergone cancer treatment & had had radiotherapy/chemotherapy at the local hospital ( Royal United Hospital) was being discharged. He took a shower in his hospital room beforehand, subsequently he died of an infection. I can't remember exactly what type of infection, whether bacterial, viral, etc, but it was traced to the water system at the hospital. The hospital was taken to task for this, & I can't remember if there were any legal consequences. THOSE who don't know, there are certain cancer treatments that can weaken a person's immune system & make them more vulnerable to infection. FINALLY, I went to school in this lovely ancient city, & I've had my meningitis & pneumonia vaccinations, so maybe I should go for a dip!
