I want the writers to describe every character's skin color the way they describe the dark-skinned women. Like, "his skin was the color of rich, frothed milk, blended to a perfect lump of foam atop a latte of blood" or "her insanely soft skin was the amber color of a roll of triple-ply toilet paper that had been dropped in a clogged urinal at a music festival"

Writers used to describe pale skin as being like milk or cream all the time (look through Romance novels of the 80s/90s) and I'm pretty sure it lessened because it became a sign of back writing. Hopefully the Coffee/Mocha/Caramel shit falls out of favor the same way. And honestly I hear a lot of defense of purple prose but is the writing really better when the same three metaphors are used to describe people over something "blander" like "She had dark brown skin, even darker brown eyes and tightly curled black hair,"?

So, I'm an Indigenous (Otipemisiwak) woman from Canada, but the problems with this book still register with me. What really gets me is how the authors write fake Cherokee history. EXTREMELY fake. Cherokee DID NOT LIVE IN OKLAHOMA before the trail of tears. Before colonization, Cherokee were a semi-urban people (and possibly some were EXTREMELY urban before that) EAST of the Mississippi, until they were forcibly removed and marched across the plains into Oklahoma - with an intentionally staggering death toll, at that. It absolutely boggles my mind that a teacher in Oklahoma would write a book depicting fake Cherokee history - that takes place THOUSANDS OF YEARS ago, in a region they DID NOT LIVE IN.

Also, I did once pirate the latter half of the books and skim through them all a few years ago. Your flea market theory is ACCURATE.
@mariametaterran3008 Жыл бұрын
Also the intro to the next book always annoyed me. Zoey's dream self dances around in a stereotypical buckskin dress, and the scene depicts it as a reflection of her Cherokee identity. And like, I'm not saying Cherokee don't or never have worn buckskin dresses, but it is definitely not something I would associate with Cherokee as an individual people. It's really more of a plains native, or more commonly, white stereotype of generic native thing. Cherokee made TEXTILES. Even pre-colonization, they still made textiles from cotton and goat wool. They were and still are well known for their intricate TEXTILES.

And (correct me if i am wrong) every ritual Grandma Redbird does seems to be more Wiccan/pagan in nature. I don’t know anything/substanial about the indigenious people of the Americas (bc i am german) but this whole Mother Earth and Goddess stuff seems more New Age/esoteric.

@sillyd0g5 ай бұрын
not to be that guy but the cherokee were definitely not weaving with goat wool pre-colonization. domesticated goats were introduced to the americas via colonization. we have wild mountain goats in the US, and the coastal salish people of the pacific northwest definitely used mountain goat wool to make textiles, but cherokee weavers wouldn't have had access to mountain goat fibers because ancestral cherokee territory and mountain goat territory are on practically opposite ends of the country. most of the search results i got for cherokee goats wool textiles were either websites showcasing the work of contemporary fiber artists of cherokee heritage and depop listings for cherokee brand clothing, and the rest of the results were talking about uses of goat's wool by other indigenous groups.

I want it to be known that Kalona being entombed in Oklahoma is literally impossible because the Cherokee are not indigenous to that region. They were forcibly relocated there in the 1830s as part of the Trail of Tears. Either Kalona was entombed by a different tribe, or the Casts are erasing an historical atrocity. (Also, the Cherokee, as such, didn't exist 1000 years ago, 'cause tribes/nations shift a lot over that many centuries. Their territory would have been within the Mississipian Empire.) I also wanna note that much of Grandma's supposed Cherokee traditions are actually the author inserting her own Pagan/Wiccan beliefs into the text (like the Full Moon Prayer candles) and pretending they're Cherokee practices, because Grandma is supposed to represent the face of the Crone in the Triple Goddess. I think the point was she took it as a sacrifice from aphrodite because aphrodite wanted to give stevie ray her humanity and being touched by Nyx, probably knew thats what needed to happen to restore Stevie ray. And then later she's still connected to Stevie ray by the imprint. But nyx gives aphrodite visions so she's still touched by the goddess and therefore still important and loved. Even though it should make sense, it's supposed to be a choice and a sacrifice so that it's not "nyx's fault" but that goddess is all up in their business pulling strings out of their asses all night long so she's definitely a contradiction. If she doesn't want them she can just turn them back into humans and let them live the rest of their lives normally. She turned Aphrodite into a human again, so it's something she can and will do if she wants to. I saw a video by the channel EssenceOfThought from about a year ago on Rachel Oates I encourage anybody who sees this comment to check the video out for yourself, as it has some concerning evidence of Rachel not being as kind to everyone as she seems I do not come at this from any sort of hate for Oates; I only want people to see the evidence so they can make up their own minds

Also... If Zoe was decapitated, her head would live for up to 30 seconds on its own, without the body. It's absolutely absurd, but back when people got decapitated as punishment, some "research" was conducted, and it showed that human heads lived on, probably also knowing that their body was gone. So a gruesome and weird scene now got even weirder.

these are honestly some of my favorite bad books ever, as someone who started reading them in middle school and then went on to read the whole series as an adult. it's amazing how horrible they are, like a train wreck you just can't look away from. can't wait to see you cover the next few books bc OH MAN the craziness of the plot is just something to behold and i love that these videos allow so many to see it all. additionally, as i actually own some of the books digitally, something has become apparent to me upon reopening some of the earlier books recently. it seems that the authors have been retroactively going back to take out some of the more egregious and offensive lines? i don't know for sure, but i think they've been completely writing out their constant use of the r slur entirely, the comparisons of POC skin tones to coffee colors, and a lot of the stereotypical writing surrounding damien's whole existence in the series (along w/ some other awkward/offensive things like zoey's constant judgement of people's physical appearances, etc.). i have NO idea when they started making these edits to the digital copies, and it doesn't change the fact that the actual plot to the series itself is just......... bad, but seeing the comparisons between the original text and the changes they've made now is really fascinating lmao.

Zoey having an affinity for all five elements could have worked if they went in more of an ATLA direction, like she had to do hard work and practice to master them all. I’ve always had an affinity for drawing, but I still had to practice to improve and my work has gotten worse the longer I’ve gone without practicing. Having your protagonist be effortlessly good at Literally Everything™️ isn’t just uninteresting, it’s lazy.

I don't think it ever occurred to me just how deeply seeped these books are in biblical doctrine. As someone who attended Bible College, I genuinely know people who live like Zoe. Without the vampirism and supernatural elements. The unwavering devotion, the authority figures abusing their power, the self righteous and vindictive attitudes. Just watching this is bringing up a lot of memories and I can't believe I never realized it when reading these in middle school.

Idk if anyone has already explained "bowing up" but if not, allow me. It's pronounced "bo" like a bow and arrow and it's referencing the arched "bow" shape a rattlesnake's body makes when they are being threatening (and other types of snakes probably idk??). To "bow up" is to get aggressive toward someone. Just another southern American turn of phrase that confuses everyone else on the planet. 😅 Also, love that you are continuing with this series! Your reviews are a treasure.

You know, I kinda wonder how the Cast duo wrote these books. Because the longer it goes on, the more it seems like the mother Cast wrote the initial books herself and then passed them over to her daughter in the editing phase to "teen it up." Like, make it sound like actual teenagers and stuff. And if that is the case, I wonder how much better it would've worked if *just* the mother had written the books. Because in the sections were it's low-key clear that only the mother wrote it, things seem relatively interesting. Dark, ominous, adult character, no weird judgments.

Chapter 7 - Aphrodite could have used that moment to point out how little they must be friends if they are willing to abandon Zoey quickly after a teacher seduces her. Chapter 13 - Melodramatic. There is so much wrong with the idea of 'I've met you and fall in love' three times. This isn't explained. It isn't even treated like its a part of Zoey just being more passionate than her peers. Did Heath cheat or something? No. Heath is a douche, but she screwed him over time after time. Heath is too good for her. Chapter 18 - This is the first time after the first book that Aphrodite is doing something bad. She is going to lead a guy on. Chapter 19 - Never betrayed you in my heart... only my genitals. Chapter 23 - Well... we have the make the gay character even gayer. He's a poetry buff Chapter 25 - 'But my gut' means, they didn't have a good reason because vampyre queen wasn't given real character. Chapter 32 - Why is Stark so awesome in her life? Why is it worth breaking the circle? Beta readers would have helped with this. They need beta readers. There are way too many whys here. If at any point a character's action doesn't make sense, you must have a solution or reason.

Im so mad because I think the core idea of these books is pretty cool! New ish take on Vampires, Vampire schools, cool warriors that for some reason talk like medieval knights, fancy tattoos. Aphrodite as a character is actually very cool, and feels very real. Its just the Mary Sue protagonist and the awful pacing that ruin it. Id actually be interested in seeing this Vampire world and exploring it with the characters. E.g. Darius being a warrior, why do they talk like that? Why arent there female warriors too? Do they have to talk like tht and then in their barracks they just be like "hey bro, so how was training?"? I like the Vampyre hogwarts type thing, the affinities and powers etc. The exexution is just SO BAD.

1:06:40 from what i remember of the book this scene pisses me off so much because after reading it, i am 100% convinced neither of the Cast duo have actually read Othello. The scene from Othello they pick is the one where Othello is telling Desdemona to confess her sin to God before he kills her for cheating on him. But if you actually read the full story you know that Othello is in the wrong, being manipulated by his friend Iago into killing her. Desdemona was entirely faithful. Now if they wanted to draw parallels between the characters in the play and Erik and Zoey, then they should have had Zoey reading as Othello, and Erik Desdemona. But they went with literally the most surface level take they possibly could have! I've barely read either of these stories and i was able to actually draw proper parallels between these characters! Cast duo, i am begging you, please, actually learn how to use symbolism and properly draw parallels between characters!!! Dont just read the surface level text of a story and assume it makes narrative sense!!!!

re: general cultural appropriation in this books, Shekinah (or Shekhinah) is a Jewish concept. It's a word for the presence of G-d, and is feminine in Hebrew so is sometimes used to refer to the feminine aspects of divinity as well. It feels super fucking weird to me that they named they're high vampire priestess to the goddess Nyx after one of our names for G-d. Did they just google like, divine feminity/goddesses when they were coming up with their vampire names and steal from everyone, even if it makes no sense?? I myself did a quick google just to see if any other cultures/religions use 'shekinah' as a term, and it didn't seem like it. I could be wrong -- it might not be exclusively Jewish -- but I'd wager my student loans that if there are other Abrahamic/Levantine cultures that talk about the Shekinah, the Cast duo did jackshit as far as research on them either. Not nearly as aggregious as the Cherokee appropriation going on, of course, but it still felt worth pointing out. Stop dragging closed, marginalized cultures into your weird YA vampire book!

I like to forget that at one point I liked these books. The two things that always set me off about them, though, were Zoey's extreme childishness, and how they took the personification of Night from Greek mythology (which, mind you, Nyx was originally a badass Goddess that even Zeus was terrified of), and turned her into.... whatever they hell this shite claims. Granted, Vampirism has a history all over the world, with many different myths and stories depicting it, but this? It made me think Richelle Meade's books turning into that Netflix-worthy, vomit-inducing, fish-eye-lens-heavy piece of garbage was the best thing to happen since flare jeans made a comeback in the 90s. At least it kept this train wreck from being made into a movie. (Edited because I'm dyslexic and rely too much on autocorrect to fix spelling mistakes that it doesn't always pick up on)

Fellow Oklahoman here that as a teen collected all of the HON book series myself (I still have a couple of the spin off books). I gave the OG series away a few months back after not being able to stomach reading through them again, talk about bad writing / pacing. By the end of it all Neferet was a borderline Saturday morning cartoon villain. The Stevie Rae and Rephaim romance was admittedly my favorite part of the series next only to the real main character herself Aphrodite and her incredibly healthy, devoted, and boundary respecting warrior Darius. I always liked reading chapters from Aphrodite's POV and wish more than anything this series had been in the hands of competent writers so she could've been in her rightful place as the protagonist of the House of Night.
