Depends on what you mean by maintained. If you mean maintained as in dressed up, well maybe although there is some very well kept horses all over the world. When it comes to getting proper exercise or maintaining a close to natural life style they don't really fit those criteria of maintenance or at least not more than many other horses. And when you think about them as living beings and less as a vehicle or accessory the latter aspects should probably be a priority.

I saw a slightly different Household Cavalry formation 65 years ago. My family loved it so much we came back the second day and on that day a riderless horse broke out of the rear stables and moved into formation, on-line with the other horses. It caught everyone off guard and they continued not knowing what to do to break up the ceremony. Well someone had to come forward to remove it and the crowd burst into applause for the horse. As a small child this was the best part of my London trip. Broke my heart when I heard about the 1982 IRA bombing in Hyde Park.

I have always noticed how shiny the horses coats are and the troopers uniforms. Also it is lovely to know the horses names and be able to identify them from their markings. I recently watched the preparations for the Queen Elizabeth cup and the judging in that dreadful weather. You might guess that I am a horse lover and having worked with them myself I understand the loving care they get here. I recently saw a video on KZbin of one of the mounted house guards coming from the stables to fulfill his duty for the day with his horse in great distress because the bit was under its tongue. The animal gave every signal it could that something was painfully wrong but the guard tried to force his mount to cooperate and go through to stand guard instead of listening and checking to see what the trouble was. Finally, someone else came to the aid of the horse and the guard dismounted and walked it back into the barracks. Some of what is in this video is clearly not accurate if that's the kind of horsemanship and care these 4-legged beauties receive. It was shameful. The Queen would have been outraged.

I hope they’re one day bitless and turned out horses, with streamlined and lighter tack, or simply no horses at all. 08:11 “I love the history of it” don’t we all, but some traditions don’t have to last forever. They have to be modernised, especially those including animals, for their own dignity. No hate! I recognise these animals are fed and well cared for, but we don’t have to stop there.
