Takeaways from tonight's episode: 1. Ryan, Butch and Sydney along with guests Luis Nasser, Rick LaBonte and Martin Popoff in the house tonight 2. "It's not just the age, it's the mileage" 3. "Zero Fucks given" 4. "I can still play it every now and then if I pace myself" 5. "It's pretty cool and not so great at the same time" 6. Sydney to Butch re: Van Halen demo: "I'll let you look at it" 7. "He's a light skinned black guy. I can say that. You guys can't" 8. Too much Guns n Roses talk for me; from the look on Pete's face, he agrees.... 9. "Don't pick on Punky" 10. "This album sounds like total shit and I say that in a very loving way" 11. "I think these guys did a lot of LSD, hung out with Hell's Angels then went in the studio and blew out every amp..." 12. "They have about 300 albums I haven't heard" 13. "White Boy?" 14. "Dark as molasses"

Late commenting but wanted to thank al the HVS and guests Luis, Martin and Rick for helping fill out the square positions for this episode. Great folks to be involved in the discussion and such a variety of choices. Special thanks to Ryan for some of his choices since unfamiliar with many of his but certainly some new hard rock bands to find for listening. The mix of personalities, backgrounds, and ages really brought extra enjoyment to this episode which is why this show remains must see TV. Butch's reaction - facial and verbal - to the Flower Travellin' Band mention was hilarious. Thanks to all for spending your time on this and thereby making our time watching so enjoyable. Using the Martin rule of picking the true top 5 for today, the choices would be: 1. Are You Experienced? by the Jimi Hendrix Experience - and the electric guitar would never be the same again 2. Led Zeppelin's debut. An album that is always a great listen, even after all these years. 3. Boston's debut. Every song a keeper, nothing like it then or since and another that is always a great listen. 4. Van Halen debut. And the electric guitar would never be the same again, again. 5. Climbing! by Mountain. A guitar tone unmatched from the big man And the cowbell grabs your attention at the get-to. Honorable mention: Fresh Cream by Cream. These power trio pioneers amazed the 10 year old kid listening to them the first time when big brother brought the album home.

im not particularly a Pumpkins guy but i agree about the sentiment. i really liked these panels but it also feels really limited in a lot of ways because all of these guys like never grew out of or moved on from metal and hard rock, and im not insulting metal and hard rock and am not saying it is a phase or something that people should grow out of. but i just mean people get older and time moves on and things change and people discover other things and tastes change, i just cant understand still only like metal 30 or 40 years after first discovering it. when i was in high school in 87 i discovered Thrash Metal and i become absolutely obsessed it was EVERYTHING to me, i was like ok this is it this is the rest of my life i know what i like and i know what i am going to be doing. i had no way of knowing at the time that i was the right age and it was the right time and i just happened to be getting into this scene when it was at its absolute peak. a couple years later all those bands i LOVED were putting out new albums and as i went out and bought all of them i just kept thinking they were all not quite as good as that previous album. and i kind of had a falling out with my big group of friends who were all getting int more and more real world trouble and over night my whole scene and friend group were gone. and i started discovering more kinds of music that i didnt know existed previously which is where Thrash was when i first heard it and my musical interests started to grow and evolve. and it didnt mean i didnt still like metal but i also started to like other things as well, and honestly i am really grateful for it because at the time Death Metal was coming out and then Black Metal was coming out and the really hard Industrial stuff was happening and it felt like the fast hard music i liked just kept having to get more hard and more fast and maybe even losing some of what i loved about it as bands tried to keep up and out hard each other and it started to be sort of boring. and i was glad that i was able to start taking a step back and enjoying some other kinds of music and some slower things and some gentler things, variety is great. but some of these guys on these panels particularly seem like they are still stuck in that place i was as a teen of competing with your peers over who likes the hardest and purest stuff and it is sad because there are SO many genres and styles and decades of music out there that they might not be enjoying. it is like they are still in that head space pf proving themselves, like the people that want to make sure everyone knows they love metal, even when it was out of style and everyone was shitting on it i was a soldier that was carrying that flag. ok let it go the war is over, you can like other stuff too.

Great show, everyone. Love many of the picks mentioned in the video. I couldn’t rank my faves on this topic, but Hendrix’s “Are You Experienced?” would be extremely high on my list. Great to see the love for Queen’s debut (I knew Martin would pick it), even if, personally, I place several other Queen albums above it. Luis was awesome for picking a few things outside of what was typically expected; I rocked that RAtM album back in ‘92/‘93, too. Same thing goes for “Evil Empire” a few years later. Even though I don’t listen to RAtM all that much these days, it is pretty rad stuff. Cool for picking Pearl Jam, even though I’ve never been a huge fan; I absolutely love one album from the band, and really like another one. “Ten” (which is not one of the albums I referred to above) is just ok to me. So, excepting the two albums, I can easily do without the rest of Pearl Jam’s catalogue (“Ten” included.)

@@Diitkokeho From the first list (not the HM's) Captain Beyond is the standout for me, great first album. That one should've made my list but I saw them as proggy psyche not hard rock (with elements of jazz, Southern rock, Latin etc thrown in for good measure). Allman Bros Bobby Caldwell plays here, as well as alumni of Purple, Rick Derringer & Johnny Winter. With that lineup one could assume the hard rock label. Anyway, Sufficiently Breathless is probably my favorite CB album... From the 2nd list the standout band is Saga, I love this band. I don't think they get nearly enough love. I've got pretty much all of their albums (26 total), I think I'm just missing a couple of live albums. But having said that I have to say that their debut to me is one of their weakest. My faves have to be Sagacity, Trust, Symmetry, House Of Cards, Network & Generation 13. They started in '78 & still going strong, along with Rush arguably Canada's best ever prog band. Great best-of collection Best Of Saga Now & Then The Collection 1978-Infinity, and live album Spin It Again! Live In Munich. Legs Diamond was an excellent 70's (and early 80's) band. Their 1980 album Uncut Diamond is really great, so is Fire Power. For Montrose fans, their ex-singer joined Legs in the 2000's. Detective's first isn't bad either.

Best HR debut for me is one I consider the last great HR debut from a band that appeared on the cusp of the grunge era and was a breath of fresh air: Back Street Symphony -Thunder Bad Company S/T Led Zep 1 Queen S/T Whitesnake Trouble Have to mention one album that wasnt a bona fide debut (it was their fifth but they weren’t HR). It debuted their signature HR three chord boogie sound they were famous for: Piledriver Status Quo HM Free Tons of Sobs

Good call Ryan with Flower Travellin' Band. "Satori", "Made in Japan", and "Make Up" are all tremendous albums. I have "Satori" on vinyl and cd.

I was blown away with Ryan's pick of FTB as well. Bought a mail order reissue a few years back. One month later I scored an original copy in a local antique shop for $12.00!

I wish that when you guys show albums and CDs that you would say who they are and the title, because I can’t always read the cover because of the size of writing or the glare of the lighting. They might be albums that some people (me) might not know but would like to hear. Flashing a CD or vinyl album for a split second is not helpful without saying the band name and title. 🤷🏻♂️

True, most of the time I'm listening to these videos while I work and I can't always turn around to look at what they're holding up.

Agree . Many times an album will be flashed then I have to decipher from the comments what it is .
@jimmycampbell783 жыл бұрын
Which albums could you not see or recognise? Maybe I can help you out if you give me timestamps. I am just over an hour in and I could see everything so far so maybe I can help.

@@jimmycampbell78 I think it is more of an in general on these shows that some guests tend to just flash an album thinking it is obvious .

God, I’m so happy to see Rick picking Rush’s debut album. I love that album so much and I mostly just see hate and apathy toward it. I’m always happy to see it make a “Top” list rather than a “Worst” list.
@manuelper3 жыл бұрын
I'll admit to being apathetic towards 'Rush', always have been. Mind you, Rush is my favorite band, but I could never get into their first album, it always sounded too derivative of Zeppelin. I do love 'Working Man' though, that's the one song that really stood out, for a reason.
@Fritha713 жыл бұрын
@@manuelper I'm also not into the debut all that much, but unlike you I actively HATE Working Man, it's one of the worst on the record, haha. Here Again and Finding My Way are the standouts for me.
