The HUGE Mistake Jurgen Klopp Made Against Man United

For the second time this year, Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool failed to win at Old Trafford despite looking in total control. But this was a far cry from the total chaos of their FA Cup tie, and needed a disaster from Jarell Quansah to allow Manchester United back into the game.
However, while many may point the fingers at the young centre-back, Liverpool's real problem lay in a decision made prior to kick-off. Adam Clery looks at the game to see if this could be the mistake that costs Liverpool the league...

Agree. The number of chances they need to get a goal is unfathomable. But looking at each of those chances is even worse - they really should've beaten both City and united. @@AkiraEdits I can agree. Salah has always missed many easy chances. What saves him is that he also scores plenty so it's easier to criticise an opinion that criticises Salah. But when looking beyond numbers at the actual chances, he should have quite a few more. Nuñez, though, has more shots than anyone in the league, and isn't even close to the top scorer. Diaz as well has plenty of shots, and he isn't even in the top 20 of scorers. Liverpool really should be out of sight in this title race. Or at least they ought to be with 4 more points after wins v City and United. I don't watch too much beyond highlights but I saw those games. I'm sure there will be other dropped points through the season because of it.

I think the intention may have been to play Konate in both games. He took a really big knock on the knee against Sheffield United when Osula practically landed on him, bending it the wrong way. That's probably the reason he didn't start.

Come to think of it, Konate had been ruled out for sometime leading up to his return in the Sheffield game. Knowing Klopp, he was looking to play Konate to get minutes in his legs. Being an easy fixture and all he wanted maybe to get him into his stride against an easy opponent. I definitely think had it not been for the knock he picked up in that game, he'd have featured against United. The CB pairing of him and VVD is the Boss's preferred CB pairing.

I think Klopp intended to play Konate, and while it was down to fitness issues that he didn't play, I think that's more because of the tackle on him in the Sheffield United game (which should have been a red card, by the way) as opposed to his usual problems.

Our wingers were in poor form in front of goal for awhile now. Their passing and decision-making for shots let us down. We're in a rut where we don't have any clear attack other than pass to the forward with seniority then live or die by their individual quality on the day. We used to cross, cut-back, overlap with someone ready to receive the ball, or at the far post ready for a tap-in.

I believe Konate has made a pass or two that are similar to Quansah's mistake this season. The difference is (a) it wasn't Fernandes who received the ball then, (b) he got bailed out by other team members (Allison and VVD come to mind), and (c) occasionally he has the incredible pace to fix his own mistake. TAA made a similar mistake at least twice this season, I think, one of which led to a goal (based on a vague memory). Based on the ball's trajectory, and Quansah's passing, especially short passing, this season, I think he realized he was making a mistake as he was passing the ball (or was focusing on "don't pass it to Fernandes"), and as a result, hits it just right so it doesn't get anywhere near VVD and goes almost straight to Bruno

I think Klopp is looking at the games ahead also. AKA, the Europa league game mid-week vs. Atalanta. Klopp wants Konate to start that one for sure, and as you put it, Konate can’t do 2 games within a week’s space. So Konate starts vs. Sheffield United, and for the Europa league clash this coming Thursday. That leaves the CB option open for either Gomez or Quansah; with Gomez being more favourable in a more versitile role as he can play either position as fullback or as a CB. @FourFourTwo

One thing to maybe consider with Konate is that against Sheffield he was able to break his fast in game. Against United it was not possible. klopp didn’t make any mistakes that’s why he was so angry after the second goal, it was the same as the FA cup game where klopp was shown angry on the sideline when it was 1-0 at 60 minutes because he knew the game wasn’t finished regardless of how much control liverpool had. We had something like 3.6 xg that game with the majority of it coming from the first half, salah had 2/3 good chances then nunez and szoboszlai had a couple it should’ve been 2-0 atleast at half time. Then the 2 goals we conceded came from a mistake and out of nothing klopp couldn’t control that.

My guess as to why Klopp chose Quansah over Konate (and as you stated I do not really think this was a mistake) 2 points - Firstly as we are not the manager and he is trying to manage his players maybe...just maybe he has some more information that we do not like, oh i don't know, Konate is playing injured and Klopp was trying to use him for the games he knew he could rely on him for at say 60%???? This is a guess I do not know but I am guessing Klopp might. Secondly, and again (I am no expert by any shakes) maybe....he used Quansah as he might be younger and fitter to deal with the likes of Garnacho, Hojland or Rashford especially if Konate is being managed due to his fitness. I am still not sure this should be classed as a mistake by Klopp for having faith in good players whatever their age. For me Quansah has shown time and again he can be relied upon and considering the way he played after the mistake, I think Klopp is right.

This video entirely missed the mark. 1. Quansah is him and deserved to start, had konate started they wouldve set up completely different. Klopp played to Quansah’s strength and he just made a mistake. 2. If youre gonna blame anyone blame Nunez when he didnt pass it back to szobo on that counterattack, its a team effort, liverpool werent at their best. 3. Saying casemiro blindly and luckily passed that overhead ball to mainoo is just plain wrong, if you watch it back, he scans, receives, and makes that pass happen. 4. Gomez shouldve started over robertson, the way klopp set up works best when you have an inward fullback and robertson doesnt provide that. To me, klopp looks as if hes caught between two styles of play and neither robertson nor quansah flourish in this.

His mistake should have been something to harass him about afterward, spoiling Kelleher's clean sheet and all in an otherwise easy win. But our front three were dismal. And wasn't it still 1-1 when Nunez crossed the ball to no one when Szobo was unguarded at the penalty spot? Also, anyone paying attention knew it was possible all three teams in the title race could win their final 8 games. It seemed likely to me. I hope I'm wrong about that, because Liverpool's not winning now unless both Arsenal and City also stumble.

I largely agree pal with the analysis. Quansah's error is indeed 'dumb' but something you'd expect of someone with his inexperience. Indeed the emphasis lies on two key components here: 1) Was it worth playing Konate against the worst team in the league knowing his injury issues ? 2) Why do Liverpool continually not punish Manchester United this season whilst on top? We won't ever unravel the answers for both but in a title race coming down to bare margins and Salah himself admitting prior to the game 'we must win all of our games' this may be a moment in the season we look back to and say .. was it here that we lost it !

For the rest of the match, our form player MacAllister was completely isolated and have next to no impact on the game. Neither did Jones. Instead of controlling the match, our formation mirrored Man U: A giant hole in the middle like a donut. It's just 2 drunken man trading blind punches after that

Not blaming Adam for this, as Hungarian is hard to pronounce, and almost everybody else makes the same mistake, but the initial sound in Szoboszlai's name is simply /s/. The Hungarian 'sz' is the equivalent of English 's'.

You could actually say that Virgil was at fault too. He saw the danger coming but failed to react to it. Instead of stepping up to challenge Bruno he stepped back and allowed him a free run at the ball.

I initially thought that, but I think Virgil pulled away to purposely make it look like the pass was even worse - because he didn’t want the other player even half tempted to make it (sending the danger)- but quansa didn’t read Virgil’s game, and rushed the pass anyway…

I think Klopp just doesn’t have respect on Ten Hag. Both FA cup and this game, he fielded his best teams on the prior games. I shows he doesn’t take Ten Hag seriously. I think that’s a grave mistake. Ten Hag tactics are quite bad but Man Utd has quite a few skilled players who can show individual skills.

Klopp didn't get anything wrong. the xG is Liverpool 4.43 - 0.81 Man Utd. Meaning if both teams show equal quality in terms of finishing, Liverpool win this game about 4-1 or 5-1. The Liverpool players bottled it

I'm sure Adam would be the first to say that all the tactical stuff is fine but it ultimately came down to individual performances. Salah & Nunez missed a metric tonne of chances & the young lad Quansah made a young lad's mistake. If you played that game again with the teams setting up exactly the same way, Liverpool would win by 3 or 4 goals.

The question should be why Klopp didn’t start Joe Gomez at center back if Konate couldn’t go. Quansah is the emergency backup to the backup to the backup, literally pulled from the academy after Konate and Joel matip we’re injured AND Joe Gomez was forced to cover at left back. Gomez should’ve been in at CB and Quansah back to the bench behind Konate. Oh well, Klopp has no one to blame but himself for leaving his best option on the bench

For now, I only feel that our CBs aren't capable to play a high line. Yes, slow CBs are also being played in a high line but for that, your midfielders should always put pressure. Casemiro isn't capable of it this season. I get the criticism of ETH opting for this style which clearly is win or bust, but isn't it stupidity to ask Maguire/Evans at CB and Lindelof at LB to play a high line? Every team doesn't want to play like Man City or Arsenal, ie in a positional, patient possession based style. Liverpool and Real Madrid are best examples of elite teams winning trophies through transitional play. It would be idiotic to ask Rashford/Garnacho/Antony to play like Grealish or Saka when clearly their strengths lie in running in behind. Being a Man Utd fan, I hate this style but this is the best fit for this injury plagued team. Some teams have injuries, some have recurring injuries, some have injuries to key players, some have recurring injuries to key players and finally some have 7-8 players atleast constantly out. Man Utd fit into all those categories at once. For ppl who say ETH out, lets say we bring Pep in, will he be okay to play with these CBs. No right!? He would demand a massive clearout and bring his own players in, like what he did at City. So, if the best manager in the world can't do anything, how would a certain De Zerbi, Potter or Nagelsmann improve the team (who are on or below ETH's level anyways). You can have incredible ideas, but its the players who should have the capability to execute it. ETH demands discipline, has a good experience, has tactical acumen and most importantly, works best with youth. So, its the best profile for a manager. With Man Utd's academy doing so well, I think we would reap rewards if we stick with ETH. Idk why, but I haven't felt fighting for a manager so hard. I hope INEOS recruit some young, hungry, physical players and overhaul half the squad. High time players at Man Utd leave before kicking out a manager
@makei89
@makei89 Ай бұрын
Good analysis but saying de zerbi and nagelsman are below ETH is a little stretch, we don't know who is below who for sure, but for Potter yes you are right
@user-ig1ps2mr2r
@user-ig1ps2mr2r Ай бұрын
@@makei89 Oh never bro. I said on or below his level. Atleast on basis of experience, ETH is far ahead of De Zerbi and Potter. Certainly, Nagelsmann has the same reputation as ETH, atleast when he left Ajax for Man Utd. My point was ETH has the "best profile" to be a Man Utd manager. Especially his tendency to thrive with youth players. We talk about Motta, De Zerbi, Amorim etc but how can you implement even one pattern of play when you don't have the same starting XI 2 games a row and when the entire team from the past 7-8 yrs has been setup to play counter attacking style. I am confident INEOS won't take a reactionary and shallow decision of sacking ETH.

All good stuff but no one is looking at the things that are really odd - who else has a record this year against Liverpool of 1 draw and 2 wins out of 3 games? How is it that MU are conceding huge XG and shots at goal every week but shots on target are very close week on week (7-5 on target last game, for example)? Would MU have this record if they set up as they did in 2022-23 and as any sensible analyst would want, especially in midfield? Assuming the coach is not a total moron (and his record suggests he isn't), then what is the method, what is the reason? I don't have the expertise but each time analysts focus on the obvious (donut in midfield, pressing structure, blah blah blah) they are skirting around the bits that are really strange and that might actually form part of the answer.

I think this is vert unfair. The biggest problem was Liverpool's attack massively underperforming. They had almost 4 xG. They wasted too many chances. Especially Salah and Diaz, people criticize Darwin Nunez but he didn't have the best chances in the game

I've never seen Liverpool as being in the title race this season. Too many changes/new players, new front end dynamic to develop which is proving difficult, esp with Salah having a difficult 2024 with afcon and hamstring. it's remarkable they've been up there, never expected it. This is the draft version of Liverpool 2.0 under Klopp as development takes time and experience, and some of that you can't short circuit / do in one season and win the title. Also Arsenal are going to win this title. Going out of the cups has saved their season. They were ragged at xmas , then getting knocked out of the FA cup gave then 2 breaks in January (even had a warm weather training camp). When they met lfc 1st week of Feb, they were on 3 games in 34 days. LFC were on their 3rd game in 7 days after a full January schedule while they were carrying 10 absences (thru Jan & Feb) and Arsenal were sharper, quicker, better in every respect and the goals were all elementary mistakes. 1st one , Konate was 5 yards behind the defensive line playing Havertz onside and VVD made really basic errors for the other 2. None of those happen if lfc are fresh. Arsenal were then able to rip through the PL in Feb and March because they also knew they had 14 days off before the int'l break in March!!!! So their squad is in fantastic condition and now they are finishing the season off playing controlled football, careful not to rip through teams in order to manage what is basically 6 weeks or so, which they'll do no probs. I think the clankiness of their game in the 1st half of the season is now an assured controlled flow that doesn't even give up chances let alone goals. Title is done. As is so often the case, the title comes down to squad condition & fitness. This season is a prime demo of why you should dump the cups / only use youth if you are going for the big prizes or if you can spend at a level that allows constant squad updates to end up with one that barely gets injuries. that's Arsenal this season with the cups and city with their cheque book. (both play good football too).

For the first time, Adam, I disagree, like a lot of other commentators. Quansah had enough quality to be picked; he makes a howler of a mistake. I don't agree only Bruno could have scored that shot, and the other Man U goal was just genius from Mainoo. No, the front three were off-form and misses from Nunez, Salah and Diaz cost us. You could even add the weak shot from Elliott at the end. Nothing wrong with Klopp's management.

The problem ive been saying all season long. Liverpool and Klopp do not have clinical finishers. Nunez, Dias, Gakpo, Jota, all blast a hard shot to win the screamer of the week award. No: terrible finishing, because of that it stays 0-0 or 1-0 and his team runs and pumps 95 mins like crazy. Everyone dead tired. So he rotates. He started against Atalanta without Slobo and Salah. A B team? In the quarterfinals of Europe? If Liverpool had a finisher or at least had Nunez TRAIN ON IT, Theyd win 2-3-nil easier and even had scored here 2 goals at half time. Klopp bougth 4 international class finishers, and Salah, sorry, is getting old at finishing. So... you cant win without a lethal striker.
