I still find it funny that I met Noah on VW Vortex or some forum like. I thought he was in college at the time. I completely forgot how I met you, but I'm sure it was the same circles, and distinctly remember some conversation about exotic rental and next it was a go. I remember saying, there's no way this can work, but months and even years later it just kept going.

A niche I thought of which I don’t mind sharing is classic car rental. Most people don’t really know any better and just think a classic car that looks cool is expensive, meanwhile it could cost 10-20k even for a restored one. You could accumulate a nice fleet for a small investment and charge essentially anything and you’d find plenty of people renting them to go to car shows, drives, weddings, etc. I know this has been tried by Turo and other websites that allow people to advertise their own cars, but I’m not sure if its ever been done on a fleet scale with a business model around it.
@GTIModBlog
@GTIModBlog Жыл бұрын
The overhead can be really high on those, like more comparable to an exotic and not your average $10-20k car. So I think the rental cost would probably need to be higher than most would want to just drive a weird old car for a day. But I am sure there is a niche where it could be doable for the right price. Gotta leave the cars in a public area with "$69/day" signs like Uhaul to minimize marketing cost!!

I was 1099 and the hoops for that was pretty extensive. I used my vehicle and had to get different insurance, a business bank account, taxes were different and so a bit more. I cannot imagine the insurance bill you have to pay on those types of cars. That alone should make a person rethink exotic car rental.

That's the biggest problem with getting traction on your brand. No one cares when your small and if you survive to get big enough like nike or Amazon you can bury them in lawyers but that middle ground where people are copying you but it's too expensive to go after them all and your brand is too well known to risk changing it, now your kinda screwed. We have all these laws surrounding business and advertising but it seems like the only people who can have something done are the super wealthy. I remember maybe 10 yrs ago a new York flashy retailer managed to take away the brand name ugg boots from a small family business here in Australia because they thought no could just take that name but they sure did.

@@jamesgordon7608 No? It's fugazi now but, according to a petitioner at the time, "Agriculture is important. To use money on entertainment is just waste, when you could be using the land, for something useful!" [sic]... so the prevailing logic is horse racing is not entertainment but car racing is? And a rotting horse track is more useful than a functional car track?.... the mind reels at the logic...
@superspeeders

There is a process to building anything anywhere. Changing the principle use of something requires a "Use variance" which requires engineers, planners, and more. I don't see any logic here to say that just paving a track without permits is acceptable anywhere in the US. Otherwise safety concerns, EPA concerns, etc are all out the window until something bad happens and then there is possibly criminal negligence.

@@superspeeders Right, as I said, what the owners did was wrong. but how do you not find the mayoral actions to be overreaching? Or hypocritical?... Invalidate the owners deed (no due process apparently?) and demo the track (but don't pay the contractor as required by law?) just to start. I get your personal attachment to the issue but, two wrongs don't make a right.

Mr Spaghetti says that you can try to duplicate the meatball recipe but you cant duplicate the taste. I actually did one of those parking lot events back in the early 2010s and it definitely seemed like they were just there for the payday. The actual people running it were ok, but the cars were horrendous on the inside (missing buttons, tore up seats and upholstery, dirt everywhere), and the "track" was trash. Needless to say, I don't think they lasted 2 years before they were gone.

A healthy industry helps everyone, better for the consumer, better for the operators. A big reason I don't really bother renting exotics when I travel (apart from the considerable cost but worth it if the experience is any good IMO) is the general scummyness of the business. Just don't know what might happen, I'd rather rent a convertible mustang from budget or the like and know exactly what the deal is.
