The three finger salute in the books is something specific to District 12 Katniss’s home. It is a tradition the people there do at funerals as a final goodbye, so when they did it at the reaping for Katniss not only were they saying a final goodbye but the other districts saw the salute televised for the first time. There is no communication allowed between districts or travel so the context of the salute is not fully understood with the other districts. So it evolves with a new meaning for Katniss specifically.
@DavidvsFilm2 жыл бұрын
Ahhhhh I seeeeee, thank you!!! I appreciate you clearing that up Amanda. Also interesting that there's no communication between districts- makes sense though with the controlling nature of the establishment.
@FestivalFacePaintArtist2 жыл бұрын
@@DavidvsFilm yeah, they do not want coordination between districts that might spark another rebellion so The Hunger Games have the added benefit of pitting the districts against one another. Also, in the book District 11 sends Katniss a parachute withe rolls to thank her for her care and treatment of Rue. This is not something the districts do for other districts. Katniss is especially moved because district 11 is just about as poor as District 12. They still pooled together what they could to send the bread to her. Sending sponsored gifts is very expensive. The fact that they send it to another districts tribute is a great display of respect but probably not liked by the Capitol.😉

In fact in the book he almost does die at the end because one of the Mutts slices his leg at the artery and he is quickly loosing blood. In the book he looses the leg completely and the capital gives him a robotic prosthetic. The book is much more gruesome than the movies. Basically he was just using the career pack to his advantage. He really didn’t know Katniss was playing up their “romance” for the cameras and to get more sponsor gifts.(Even though I believe there is plenty of subtle subtext and actions in the book to suggest Katniss did love him but she didn’t realize it herself yet) I really recommend reading or listening to the books if you can. Something I love in the movies that isn't in the books is seeing things from the gamemaker's point of view and what is going on in the other districts like when Rue's district revolts after her death. The books are entirely from Katniss' point-of-view, but the movie gives some behind-the-scenese stuff which makes things even more interesting. Also, the arenas are in real locations, but then a dome of some sort is put over it and then they can manipulate the environment. In the book, it's mentioned that people, usually from the Capitol, can vacation to previous arenas and visit locations of memorable deaths and such. Truly disturbing.

Rue’s death is a major tipping point as Katniss’ actions in laying her to rest are respectful and normal to any human being watching the movie, but in the world of the film it is a political act (not deliberate on Katniss’ part) because it HUMANISES the child. Normally the dead kid is carried away by a drone. But to see her there, with flowers and love - a funeral - it wakes people up. It tells them that yes, the pain in their heart and the thought that this death is WRONG is the right thing to be feeling. And so, riots. Normally they don’t. Everyone is numb to these losses at this point. Rue and Katniss change that. The Capitol uses the children of its citizens to control the population. It’s twisted by design. You want to rebel? Look what happens to 24 of your children every year. Well, what if we did it to all of them? They manipulate hope and condition the people to live in fear from a young age.

In the books it is explained that when you turn twelve your name is entered into the drawing once. At thirteen twice and so on until eighteen. But you can get tessera, that's a supply of grain and oil, in exchange for your name and as often as you have family members. Katniss is 16, so her name would be in 5 times, plus 3 times (for her, her mom and her sister) per year. Makes 20.Gale has a mom and 3 siblings, that's why his Name is in 42 times.
@DavidvsFilm2 жыл бұрын

This is wrong. That’s not how your name ends up in multiple times. Children who add their name to the reaping bowl are rewarded with tesserae which gives them grain and oil. They can add their name additional times for more tesserae. That’s why Katniss says not to do get anything from the Capitol, it’s not worth having her name in more times.

When you turn 18 your name is in the bowl 7 times without getting the tessera. Assuming that Gale got 5 tessera per year, for himself, his mom and 3 siblings. 5 (tessera) x 7 (years) = 35 + 7 (that would be in the bowl anyway). Makes 42.

The annual drawing of names to decide which tributes will go to the games. Children must enter the reaping at age 12 and add one entry each year until age 18. Because the entries are cumulative, at 18 one name has been entered seven times. Tessera : Children can add their names more times in the drawing in exchange for tessera; each tessera is worth a year's supply of grain and oil for one person. They can do this annually for every member of the family as well as themselves.

The genius of Suzanne Collins (the author of Hunger Games) is that she talks to her young readers as equals-presents these moral dilemmas and lets them decide for themselves-she doesn’t tell them what to think. She asks the questions and they learn to think critically. It comes across in the movies as well, but it’s really powerful in the books. We could use more critical thinking, so this is good.

@@DavidvsFilm I haven’t been exercising for several years and gained back some weight I had lost, so I went on the good old cliche slimfast diet. You know, the “shake for breakfast, shake for lunch, (2-3 meal bars or snacks in between, and a sensible dinner” deal), and it’s slow going until I actually add exercise to it, but it is working after 3-4 months or so, just the diet change. It was mainly for calorie counting, but the drinks and bars also limit sugar and carbs yet still taste really good. It’s as repetitive as you’d think, but I’m getting chocolate cookie dough bars and caramel coffee and chocolate energy shakes and such every day. Not a horrible way to limit calories, carbs, sugar, add vitamins and protein, get to eat a lot of tasty dessert bars and shakes, and also lose some weight at the same time! Side note: My family and I went to a superhero comic con with a movie and tv show themed car show in San Antonio last weekend. Made a last minute impromptu 4 minute video on my channel for the memories, and while there I met one of my childhood heroes, Sam Jones, who played Flash Gordon in the 1980 movie that’s a cult classic. If you and Mark have never seen it, it’s got a classic sound track from Queen(!), great cast, and great cheesy comic book fun. Plus crazy special effects that are still amazing today. Would be such a fun watch for you guys! Edit: Flash Gordon 1980 is slow paced like Star Wars A New Hope 1977, but both movies have a crazy, interesting world and story, and both pick up at the end for the final battles!

If you guys ever think about reading the books I would highly suggest it, because they are such an impressive showcasing of the effects of PTSD that therapists have suggested that families of soldiers read the books to understand what their returning soldiers are going through. This movie/book series takes sort of a two-pronged approach, mixing together stories like The Running Man by Stephen King (the movie, not so much, but definitely the story, because it has the haunting effect of making us realize that we are pretty much almost there in our society when it comes to "reality TV", with people selling themselves to get money... and in those books it's just a step further, and people are selling themselves to get for instance medicine, or food rations, are you get to this being essentially the immediate descendant of that story). Put that together with the concept of what it does to a developing mind to be sent off to war, and then to have to come back and reintegrate into society only to be sent back again, it really makes a point; especially with the idea of it basically being a televised war of relative children (or in this case, true children). Also, a lot about how the propaganda machine works, and how people are used to produce a result, psychologically speaking. There are a lot of details in this first movie that were altered from the books, I think to their detriment; for instance more impact with the concept of Haymitch (the recruiter / trainer who ends up an alcoholic after watching all these young trainees go tits up); a guy who has to consistently watch these kids he mentors go off and get themselves killed immediately, year after year, because none of them have any training to even survive the night, much less fight, because all they've ever done is fight starvation. And when you add that into the train ride, when they have their first really good food in their lives and the impact that makes on them, really highlighting that they're not even nutritionally prepared for such a fight. Also, the huge monsters at the end originally had the faces of all of the tributes who had died, as a way of causing psychological warfare. And, you don't really get the full impact of Cato at the end, and his speech, because what he really is is the kid who enlisted into the military as a Born In The USA-type patriotic character... because he wants to be there and had benefited elite training, and is not there because he's drafted. Because he believes in the "glory" of it for his hometown (AKA district) and all of that; and in the end he realizes that he's just doing something for other people and sacrificing himself to do it. Everything he was raised to believe was false and his world has fallen in around him, the thing that sustained him against the PTSD, realizing he really has just been turned into a killer for someone else's pleasure and profit. There's a lot more things that come up later on in the sequels about how people get used by a system like this in a myriad of ways, but yeah. They really make a good point. The books also go hard on the whole starvation part of it, and the control of resources select few, so that the people who are essentially what we would call senators' kids who don't ever have to participate in these televised wars, get to have endless access to all of the resources made by the poor people, while the (artificially) poor people have access to none of it and are on the brink of starvation at all times, which... I don't think I need to say much more about class and all of that in this. Overall the books are absolutely brilliant & the movies are a decent rendition of them. Great reaction, I am going to subscribe immediately, because you're one of the few sets of reactors to actually take these things seriously and understand what they're trying to get at, instead of thinking of them as "cool".
@mod8502 жыл бұрын
Highly, HIGHLY recommend reading the books once you are done with the movies. The movies are pretty loyal to the storyline of the books, and I feel like they complement each other well. The books are told from a first person present-tense POV of Katniss herself, which makes things very immediate and in your face. The downside is that one might miss out on the emotions and motivations of other characters, which the movies tackle very well, but in the books Katniss explains a lot of things in detail that are pretty vague in the movies.

Panem the name of the country is derived from the word for Bread I believe in Ancient Roman, or Latin). Hunger Game "Bread and Circus". It's what the ancient Roman emperors did. They used gladiatorial games and feasts to keep the people distracted and complacent. Thus the writer used a very basic real world, premise and said "and what if the gladiators are children, not trained warriors or criminals or war prisoners?" this is supposed to be in the future of the USA, when great catastrophe, both from other nature and from human failing, ripped the country apart. Some of the states even "fell into the oceans" due to natural disasters. To see a man of Panem imposed over a map of the "lower 48" (continental USA) is almost creepy.

And once she and Peeta win the games and get treated for their wounds, they actually can't save his leg from the damage from the infection, and he actually goes through the rest of the story with a prosthetic. I had to read the books in high school and the dogs in the movie are pg-13 compared to the books. The dogs in the books are what nightmares are made of also, If you do decide to read the books you’ll learn about Haymitch backstory it’s very sad and messed up

I'm not sure if by the time this video is posted you've already watched Catching Fire, but if you haven't, there's an important moment that almost every reactor misinterprets. So without spoiling anything: when you see the painting on the floor, that was Peeta who painted it. I thought it was made clear by the movie but maybe that's only because I knew it beforehand from the books, but Peeta painted it as an homage, no one put it there to mess with Katniss
@DavidvsFilm2 жыл бұрын
Hey there! Thank you and OHMYGOD you are reading my mind!!! I DID think that's what the original intent was- that someone else did it to mess with her. I have the video coming this week to youtube (up now on Patreon), but I was just thinking about the drawing and wondering if someone would tell me. And now here you are :) Thank you again-

@@DavidvsFilm Ack dang, I always hope to catch people before they watch it! It seems like they made it too ambiguous for anyone that didn't already know what happened, but then they also didn't have any scenes explaining it later so people were just left to wonder what that was all about. In the books Katniss didn't even see it, they'd covered it up and Peeta told her about it later so it's really spelled out. Not so much in the movie.

Unlike Harry Potter, Twilight and (especially) Divergent, the Hunger Games movies have not been the subject of wide-spread controversy or less than favourable retrospectives since their release, making it arguably the most consistent 21st century YA film franchise - in that sense that its public perception has barely gone down since it was first released.

That's awesome. PLUS, at this point, we're far from the ages of the people in it or the target audience (even President Snow would look at us and say, "Those old bastards?"), and we clearly found it very entertaining and engaging. So it does seem to have universal appeal!

The writing of the Hunger Games books was inspired because one day the author was watching TV and was switching channels back and forth between a competitive reality TV show and the war in Afghanistan. At one point what she was watching got so blurred in her head that she couldn't tell the difference between the programs. I might be dead wrong but from my understanding that reality TV show was Survivor Cook Islands. The very same exact Survivor season my brother, Billy Garcia was a contestant on back in 2006. 📺👀🤔➡️📝📚

Maze runner is not the same. It's basically a bunch of boys being stuck in some enclosure they can't get out of and every once in a while there's a new one coming through like a hole in the middle of the arena. The person shows up with amnesia. No idea how they got there and then one day a girl shows up and there's a note with her that says she's the last one ever and they're like we have to escape the arena. There was no kids fighting to the death, but there was something in the area surrounding the arena that could easily kill them, but it was all a test for something that's facing humanity that you'll find out in one of the later movies
@brandibastian4193 Жыл бұрын
Yeah venison is deer and it's basically like extremely lean beef. Maybe with a touch of gamingness so it's not a super exotic type meat that would take in and getting used to. If somebody gave you a piece of meat that was deer you would probably think it was a very lean piece of beef and it was just something different about the seasoning than you're used to cuz you definitely wouldn't think it was a different creature. It definitely needs to be marinated or something because it's pretty tough because they do a lot of running and there's really not any fat to speak of on them

One of the best book to film adaptations, probably the most faithful I can recall. Barely anything is left out/changed. Every movie just ups the ante, one of the few times I'm not mad they split a book into two. Was never able to get into Maze Runner. Definitely need to follow up with Red Sparrow and Mother...J-Law blows both out of the water.
@DavidvsFilm2 жыл бұрын
Hey Jon! Ooooh I forgot about Red Sparrow!! How could I forget that- I wanted to see it too. Mother looked a little iffy to me. I get that style of movie and all, I just wasn't sure if I'd like it. But I do trust YOUR judgment, so... :)
@Rocco13322 жыл бұрын
@@DavidvsFilm I wasn't a huge fan of Mother the first time through, but then I let it marinade. Should definitely watch once, the acting is so well done, very raw like in Hunger Games, and you can't help to feel what she's feeling. The Les Mis is worth watching just for Hathaway's solo Mother is worth it for J-Laws performance throughout. Definitely get Marc to watch with you if you do.
