I absolutely love how the Hunger Games uses fashion. Like, it's not just criticizing the Capital, it just shows how people of a certain class use and have historically used fashion. It's SO important and says so much about your status. Katniss spends a great deal of time talking about the fabrics they wore and the work that went into them. In the Capital, fashion doesn't have to be practical, it has to be ostentatious and get you noticed. They don't have to work hard, so they can go wild and it looks odd to the working class... And her relationship to Cinna I think showed her the importance of fashion, every outfit he put her in had a purpose. He made her realize that clothes are a tool for everyone. And it's written so well that you don't really feel like you're getting preached at about how amazing fashion is... it's just a factor of the story.

I think Katniss alway knew that clothes were a class signifier because of the thing with her moms old fancy clothes and how she and prim never looked unkempt to matter how poor they were. I think Cinna showed her how clothes can be used to send a message and create a character that could be understood by people in the capital and the districts.

@@Sheena000 Yes, that's basically what I was saying, though I may have worded it confusingly. She always noticed the clothes, the fabric, the work that went into them all before she met Cinna, but he showed her that fashion was a sort of tool with a function beyond covering the body.

Suzanne Collins was so ahead of the curve and it's precisely because she worked in children's tv for years before writing hunger games. She saw how young people were pampered and dressed up for these shows and understood how image is used as a tool in the media industry. When you think of celebrities like Zendaya and Millie Bobby Brown, both of those actresses used fashion as a way to “mature” their look as they became adults; it made people take them seriously. I also love how realistic the fashion is because it taps into history- wealthy classes wore impractical lavish clothes while the impoverished had to make do. The reason hunger games worked while the knock offs that followed failed was because Suzanne Collins had something to say. Her father was in the air force, she worked with children in the media and she saw the industry for what it was and called it out. Fashion works in the hunger games like how it works in the real world - it's a tool of empowerment, it's a tool of oppression and it creates symbols. Fashion isn't just one thing and she doesn't treat it like one thing. For a young adult novel it is so sophisticated.

I agree, but I also saw an interview with her where she describes her inspiration for the book and how it’s strange that we have this detachment from the images of war, but I didn’t like that she was presenting it as something that created distance from ppl like her father(soldiers invading), rather than Vietnamese people that were forced to endure the horrors. Veterans in america are treated well and constantly show up in classes to tell kids about war and such, but the disconnect I think is with the way the west views countries that are invaded. So I find it very weird that she would say that, bc the book seemed a lot more nuanced than that take

​@@LisaFevral I didn't think about it that way but you are definitely correct. I'm not from the USA so I can't speak on how veterans are treated there cause I simply don't know much about it. I think her work absolutely has limitations, whether that be her own writing/bias, upbringing or just restrictions of the genre. That's why I think New Adult novels like The Poppy Wars are better novels that deal with a similar subject matter; there are more layers and nuances. It's more brutal, realistic and it doesn't shy away from being a post-colonial novel that tackles war from all scales and how it affects everyone. The Hunger Games is, at the end of the day, written for children/teenagers and I think it is hard to tackle everything when you are writing allegorically for that audience. when i read hunger games at ~12 i loved katniss' perspective on fashion bc my family was low income and went to a school where richer kids had name brands and i felt very out of place. where my family couldnt afford medicine it was wild to me to see kids bring $1000 handbags to school. im glad people realize the depth of katniss' character now but a few years ago people labelled her as "not like the other girls" bc she didnt have "societally feminine" interests. well yea if youve been the sole provider for your family and can barely afford food, fashion isnt going to be ur top priority and ur going to feel like "not like the other girls" lmao. i love fashion now but there is this internal battle of liking pretty things but not buying too much either.

It was never supposed to be a critique of girls who just happen to be different, who literally just happen to not be like the other girls. It was only ever supposed to critique girls/women who are performative about their difference and hold it up as a token of superiority above 'normal' women, the ones who denigrate any girls/women who are stereotypically feminine in comparison. It wasn't just that they happened to be different, it was that they used their difference to reinforce the patriarchal value of femininity being inferior... Also... it was never that serious, it was generally about teenagers going through a rebellious/outcast phase and not recognising their internalised misogyny. Most of the people talking about NLOGs back in the day were former NLOGs themselves who grew up and were reflecting on what made them feel that way as kids. But now I'm starting to see it get applied to anyone female who just... is literally different from the norm. It's so frustrating. You can be as different as you like, as long as you aren't against other people being stereotypically feminine, as long as you don't denigrate femininity then you aren't not-like-other-girls, you're just your own unique self. When people use it to shoot down any girl who's naturally different, they basically bring it all the way back to reinforcing patriarchal values, stereotypes and conformity.

Can’t speak to the popularity of the purple design in particular, but when it comes to makeup inspiration I can speak to that a little! Can confirm, as someone who knows and has done makeup for drag queens- that while whitening the face, like Effie does, thankfully didn’t catch on in drag makeup fashion (to my limited knowledge, anyway), there’s definitely been some inspiration pulled from the hunger games and capitol makeup trends that I’ve seen in drag makeup over the years. But it should also be said, that I’m sure a lot of drag makeup and fashion were used as the original basis or inspiration for some of the designs we see in the films. Fashion and trends are cyclical, and makeup is no exception, everything is inspired by something else, etc. etc.

I was saying that people comparing the Met Gala (a fundraising event for a museum department that is almost entirely dependent on charity, where most of the artful, extravagant looks are borrowed and destined to become archive or exhibition pieces) to the Capitol people in the Hunger Games reminded me of that one tweet that was like "Dude who has only seen one movie and it's the Boss Baby, watching his second movie ever: Hey this has got kinda a Boss Baby feeling to it..." but for Haute Couture runway looks. Like, they saw Effie Trinket in McQueen a few times and now anyone wearing anything dramatic gets accused of being a decadent teen death enjoyer. It's always someone mad about people wasting energy making "fancy clothes", don't give a damn about exploitation and balk at paying more than $25 for a graphic tee they will wear hundreds of times. The fancy clothes at the Gala are more likely to be made by people with a decent wage and benefits (not guaranteed, I know! I've seen it!) than the clothes people have had regular access to buying for almost a generation. Most people who read or watch The Hunger Games don't realise they themselves probably live in the Imperial Core and have more in common with the Capitol residents than they'd like. Also, I've been doing invisalign since 2021 and have another 30+ weeks left AMA :')

@@LisaFevral yes ma'am, I just switched to tray 4/39 and my previous course I got 56/64 before my refinement came in, and the previous course was done at two weeks per tray for like a third of the trays 😭 I'm doing it to fix a molar that was sideways and causing TMJ from a fucked up bite, regular braces would have been incompatible with my life (read, my dental hygiene would tank if cleaning my teeth became more complicated) so I opted for Invisalign since the cost was basically the same. My refinement is going to be so long mostly bc the doc knows I'm worn down and won't be wearing the trays 22 hours a day like is usually prescribed, so the shifts are very small week to week.

I was trying to give an impression of the type of person who discounts the value of clothing to the point of simply utilitarian objects that should not cost more than a fast food purchase. Like if you're wearing something hundreds of times over the course of years, maybe saving up enough to buy a more ethically made shirt for 2-3x the cost of an Amazon reseller shirt, as a treat? People with the means to regularly update/upgrade their stuff every few years with use, like getting a nicer coffee grinder after making your own coffee every day for years, yet many people never make that same leap with clothes.

Sam Claflin really never had a better role than Finnick Odair. Finnick was also my favourite character. I was so horrified when he died. I loved how you went off on a tangent just to talk about Finnick. I like how you talked about how people have such a shallow reading of fashion just because the Capitol people were giving off Let Them Eat Cake vibes, when the revolution similarly used fashion to create a symbol. It's basically reflected in history as well, an example being how makeup companies (Revlon? or Max Factor?) turned makeup into a symbol of Nationalism for the Americans during WWII.

I loved how fashion was used to show the Capitol's extravagance and privilege, contrasted to the suffering district's who don't have access to art or fashion coz they're too busy surviving. And how Cinna also showed that it can be art or a weapon to manipulate the masses with. The way fashion was integrated in the story was actually one of my fave things about it. I like when fashion are described in stories I read. Not only for aesthetic reasons but for also envisioning the character. Fashion having a function in the story is a huge plus as well.

this is such an interesting conversation to have bc it reminds me of when my freshman english teacher had us read the hunger games. this was like 2012 movie era and it was really such perfect timing to be able to read the hunger games and look at it critically while it being one of the most popular franchises at the time. one of our first projects was literally designing outfits for each district based on what the district is known for, and what political messages we're trying to send with them. to say that fashion is condemned and presented as inherently consumerist and frivolous in the book ignores the impact the fashion in the story had on its messages and symbolism.

Really glad you pointed out Caesar Flickerman's outfits in The Hunger Games! He's rarely talked about because of the main characters and how they're dressed but for some reason, I noticed because he was more on the normal and less outlandishly dressed (by Capitol standards) side of things. His teeth stood out for me so aggressively too! It makes perfect sense to me because so very TALK SHOW HOST of him! The majority of people with talk shows (I say majority since there are a handful of exceptions) rarely dress in such a big attention-grabbing way, just to give the focus to their actual guests! So in this case it's Caesar with all the Tributes/Victors! He's still crazy dressed with the hair, suits, teeth and all by real-world standards, but in-world, it just works! + Stanley Tucci knew what he was doing asking for those scary-white teeth!

And I find that interesting in Catching Fire, because in that movie, for the pre-games publicity, they focused a lot more on their relationship and wedding (in the victory tour before the 75th games, in the interviews, and with the wedding dress and Peeta's wedding suit). But the parade outfits for me at least emulate sort of an aggressive, dark, angry version of that publicity they were doing for so long. It's a dark twist on the lovey-dovey narrative they created for them, Finnick even tells Katniss she looks terrifying, which is off-brand for both of them.

i never finished reading the books for the same reasons you mentioned not being able to re-read it now, the topics are too depressing and hit way too close to home especially in the current global climate - but from what i managed to get through, i realized suzanne collins really does understand the importance of fashion as form of communication and to form community. there's an emphasis in what people wear but not in scrutinizing way, more so in trying to understand them and their intentions from the things they wear first. we all unconsciously tell a story with our clothes even before saying a word, suzanne really understands that.

Loved this video so much! Especially the part where you mention how when you saw the films as a kid you didn’t know much about fashion but despite that it’s worth exploring the reactions you had to the styling even then. I was 13 when the first film came out and I remember thinking that all the capitol citizens (including Effie) looked really stupid and unserious, looking back now I ofc love a lot of the styling for the capitol but obviously it’s fun that the film spends so much time in the beginning with the district 12 citizens so you get used to how they dress and how they NEED to dress in order to do their jobs and provide for their families. It makes Effie feel like an alien when she’s first introduced, which is fitting considering for most of these kids it might be the first time they’ve ever seen someone from the capitol in the flesh. To them they’re almost like an entirely different species.

I actually always thought that Hunger Games tho it's not about fashion at all handles the topic with a lot of nuance and very delicately for a big movie production. Like yes, people at the Capitol are meant to look absolutely too much and disgustingly frivolous. And the fashion reflects the over abundance they have access to. It also shows how ultimately high fashion and designer fashion is for the upper class, to separate them from normal people. And at the same time, it also shows how fashion can be a tool of resistance, like with Cinna's work on achieving Katniss' vision for her dresses, which he ends up killed for...

Even when I first read the books and saw the movies I always thought how it was so interesting that fashion, the way you present yourself can be so influential. Suzanne Collins absolutely was ahead of the curve with her work. One of my favorites is Cassie; even years after I last saw the show I still remember the way her teeth looked when she smiled. I think THG was the first time I learned to identify literary symbolism on my own! I mean, it wasn’t much since I was 12 or 13 😅 but I realized there’s language in fashion by reading it.

I love the hunger games, i love the fashion and i think this was a great analysis. I do think the books and movies have some "not like other girls" vibes when it comes to fashion. for example that cinna is considered the most moral person from the fashion teams while also being the one who has the least flashy outfits. i recently reread the books and noticing the differences in finnick's outfits in the movies vs in the books was really funny to me. the most noticable instance was with the outfit he wore during the wagon ride and first interview event in the capitol. his high waisted skirt looks a little dorky in the movies, while his book outfit is described as super sexy and scandalous ("He's draped in a golden net that's strategically knotted at his groin so that he can't technically be called naked, but he's about as close as you can get."). I think this goes hand in hand with them turning down the sexual aspects and backstory with finnicks character. especially how slimey he is when katniss first meets him. i think that's also why the one scene was cut from the movie that you showed in this video.

When I was a teen (and as a big fan of Edgar Allan Poe) One thing the Capitol fashion always reminded me of was "the masque of the red death." I thought it was purposeful? But I don't actually know if that's true haha. Also since I've never been able to "get rid" of my yellow teeth and ppl always thought I was like unhygienic and not brushing them and stuff, its so nice to hear this is an issue that isn't true for other areas of the world

I was obsessed with the Hunger Games in highschool!! And this video was a nice surprise, I'm always down for THG content! I wasn't really interested in the new movie coming out soon (I read the book a few years ago and I didn't like that much; maybe I'll read it again though), but uuuugh now I'm craving for more THG stuff. I wanted to add, that as we know it the hunger games are a critic on capitalism, but I also wanted to pinpoint that although the capitol was quite bad, it also higlights that fashion as an art, or Art in general people will never truly have the chance to fully embrace it or appreciate it without Time and Means. Also, I quite liked the visual and designing choices in the hunger games because in the books its far more muted, and its interesting because although I think that from a meta perspective the artist who created those looks for the movies were having lots of fun, and being able to express their crafts, I think that the Capitol looks were mostly created as extravagant, to help Real people dissociated themselves from the movies, just like how at some point marketing tried selling a makeup palette like the capitol but it didntw work obviously. But at the time people did not see the reference of Capitol people just being Us, but now the peopl see the parallels with Met galas and all... Its interesting also because the fashion in these movies is like an armor too: Effie who has a kind heart we discover, and is surrounded by fake people, and then when shes in district 13 she's stripped bare of what had been her identity, but it also signifies that she was more in touch with her humanity. (remember how in the books Effie points out how well behaved katniss was at the table, but Katniss said that it was because the children never had a chance to eat before. ) Also katniss jacket, people in the district dont have much, but she has her father's jacket, and its probably one of the only things she got. Or peeta, they dont show it in the movies but he became an amputee in the first games, he literally lost a part of himself. Lost a bit of his humanity ,and how at the end of the books nothing really is described, theyre just bare and worn out. Or how the district people have very few clothes, and theyre in contact with the Harsh realities of life, and that the instinct for survival is greater than anything. Capitol people are trying to find a meaning to their lives through fashion, and district people are struggling to survive harsh winters, or in the arena they have suits made for the environments and yet it does not signify that they will live. The hunger games are extremely well written, and I do believe that the movies missed a lot of important bits, they were still quite good, in transmitting the Overall Idea of the Hunger games, even more in reaction to how people interpreted the movies as a love story.

I didn't notice this before, but the outfits that Katniss and Peeta wear during the final interview in the first movie are the same colors from Disney's "Beauty and the Beast". Katniss is wearing a yellow dress like Belle while Peeta is wearing a blue suit like the Beast. I don't know if that was intentional or not, but it's so fitting. Since Katniss and Peeta are playing the part of passionate lovers, what better love story to reference than the tale as old as time?
