I live in Hungerford, my great-great-aunt Shelia and great-great-uncle Roland (Roly) were two of the victims. My nan actually saw Michael Ryan walk past the house during the shooting. Shelia was my great-nan’s sister and we think she died of a broken heart after Shelia died. My nan and dad (he was 13 when it happened) were home when it happened. He still has psychological trauma from hearing the gun shots and seeing him walk by. It’s gotten a lot worse recently. Thank you for sharing this case; nobody in Hungerford talks about it but I do think it should be spoken about.

@@NottPip with america it is different, as self defence is a thing there. With America you're really restricted to more firearms being the only feasable solution as restriction of carrying and guns etc won't affect criminals and just make it easier for them, but with more guns and less "gun free zones" there will be less homocides related to firearms as "gun free zones" promote such areas as easy targets. And contrary to popular belief the states with the tightest laws have the most homocides (such as detroit and california). Sorry about the wall of text, i guess i know a lot about america's gun laws despite being a brit ( i can rant about the laws here too if u want)

I lived in a village by Hungerford / Marlborough when this happened and we had a house on the canal which the police thought MR was trying to escape along so we had the helicopter over us etc. And we were told to lock the doors and stay inside. What I love about you is, I had no idea about the run up and the first shootings in the forest and petrol station. You are so amazing at detail. The police were amazing on this day. Love you and love you did this case x

It took me a second to realize "come out" means "come up" like coming up with something. Where I'm from (Canada) to "come out" is pretty much only used in the context of coming out of the closet

I'm originally from Hungerford. It hasn't really changed but, it has also changed beyond recognition. I was there that day so I thought I'd add my comment. With the exception of a couple of small estates to the southern most region of the town (building developments slow to get permission due to the ever present "NIMBY-ism" in such towns), Hungerford has by and large kept within its footprint. The shops have changed and of course, people come and go. I am from a long line of people whose lives were spent in the town and immediate surrounding areas. For my ancestors these would have been and still are Chilton Foliat, Ramsbury, Aldbourne, Inkpen, Kintbury and Little and Great Bedwyn. It is largely an agricultural and farming area with histories entwined in these local industries. Labourers, farm-workers, servants and other low skilled and low paid jobs, mainly. Yet, it is also seen as an affluent area with several well known celebrity figures buying houses there. That said, while it might be "seen" as affluent, those (like my ancestors) who aren't born into wealth have to struggle with high rents, low wages and the isolation factor of being in the sticks, as it were. On my mother's side, they were Irish immigrant navvies who dug the original water wells that I believe still supply the town. Growing up in Hungerford, the was little crime beyond the usual thefts of farming equipment or the odd Friday night fight. Dorothy Ryan was a dinner lady at the primary school and I can still remember her. She was a nice lady. Michael Ryan was (it is felt by forensic psychologists) likely to have been suffering from an un-treated schizophrenic type disorder. His former neighbours told us of how he once whipped his mother across her chest with barbed wire after she delayed fetching something from the garden shed. His mother's alleged reaction was simply to scold him for being "a naughty boy". Luckily, I didn't lose anyone close to me so I must stress this acknowledgement that I only have the liberty to be able to have some empathy or pity for Micheal Ryan's life. Had he taken a family member, then I can certainly see how I would likely feel intense hatred. I do not seek to undermine, detract from or invalidate the feelings of those who lost loved ones. Ryan's obsession with firearms was well known and his inability to engage in any conversation beyond them was very apparent. He had been known to the police after there was a complaint that he had pulled a gun to threaten someone who had aggreived him. Apparently this was illustrative of the power that a gun gives the owner, something he allegedly pointed out at the time. As keen as I often am to level criticism at the police, in reality there is little reason to blame them for his access to guns as things like Hungerford simply didn't happen in England. Spree killings were seen as more of an American thing. Guns in that part of the world are common and the 1980s were different times. We were all wrong. The massacre. The 19th of August was hot and sticky with very little breeze. It was (from memory) around 1 or 2 pm when we were first aware of loud, metallic cracks or bangs that could be heard over the whole town. At the time, we didn't pay that much attention as gunshots were also familiar due to regular game shoots taking place and the fact that the sound carries. Also there were at one time, pnuematic devices placed in crop fields that would regularly let off a loud bang to scare away unwanted pests so, we paid no real mind. Still, the metallic quality of the bangs was different to the noise made by a common 12 bore. There was a smell of smoke. In the High Street (which runs through the town and is also known as the Salisbury Road or A338), there was a rush of police vehicles. Persuit cars, patrol cars, vans etc. Being a typical curious 14 year olds, we went to see what was going on. That was when we were told to leave the area as someone was armed with a gun and shooting at people. Incredulous, we scoffed at the idea however the officer's grim expression and firm orders to leave convinced us this was no wind up. On arriving at home, I was pulled in through the front door by my mother who proceeded to unfold for me the magnitude of what was taking place. The metallic bangs still continued. My mother (a sure bet to bring home a gold medal were worrying an Olympic event) told me about "Barney" (aka Marcus Barnard) being slumped over the wheel of his taxi cab. She told me that several people had been killed and I was not to go outside. I was told to phone my friends and let them know not to come to my house. I managed to make one garbled phone call before the line went dead. From our windows we could now see plumes of smoke coming from Ryan's house. There were helicopters in the air however, they were told to keep above a certain altitude as weapon's Ryan had in his possession presented a possible risk for those in the air. I cannot recall when the bangs stopped but, I will never forget the faces of people walking up the hill past our house whereby they would announce the ever increasing death toll. "Six dead, they reckon." "Seven dead." "Seven dead. One police officer killed." "Eight dead..." "Ten dead." By now, the town was locked down as best as the largely out of area police officers were able to. There were still routes in and out, if you knew where to go. Farm roads and byways are often overlooked and can be used to navigate around a whole town while hardly using the public routes. It was via one of these my father managed get home. My parents hugged and then he went to the gun cabinet. An over and under 12 bore shotgun was placed on an upstairs window sill along with some shells. I was ordered to stay out of that particular room. I already had asked my mum for the keys to the gun cabinet prior to this but, she obviously had more sense that I did and so, refused this outright. By this time, an unexpected visitor came to our house. It was my friend who I had managed to call earlier to keep him from doing exactly what he had done. He had not believed me and as I myself had done with the police in the High Street earlier that day, assumed I was winding him up. So, there we all were. Under seige and nothing to do but, watch the fires across town, listen to the news and eventually, witness ambulances. Catching glimpse between the trees of what looked like covered bodies being taken away. Eventually, Ryan's rampage came to an end at my old school. The official story is that he took his own life. My brother swears that he heard the police suggest something different while he had tuned in to the police radio band. Still, that's just a possible conspiracy and frankly, it makes little difference. The next day, we were all allowed out and of course; we wanted to survey the damage. We wanted to check with each other to make certain that what happened really had. The town was silent, despite being people out. Here and there, evidence of violence not really seen outside of a gang war zone. Some walls bore the indentations from high velocity rounds. Police tape was evident here and there. Congealed blood and human tissue still on the tarmac from those who had been shot. In what was once a coal yard stood a cream coloured minibus, windows shattered. Inside, the driver's seat was bullet torn and soaked in blood. Behind this, the floor was simply a red wax-like pool of blood to the point it was not possible to tell what colour the carpet underneath would have been. The roof of the bus had been similarly drenched and torn by fragmentation. It's true that the smell of death is similar to that of roses. At the top of town, there too was more crimson on the ground. This had been the final resting place of Francis Butler. He had been walking with his back to Ryan when he was almost cut in half by high power Kalashnikov-type, semi-automatic rifle fire. The Butler's used to live next door to us. I remember Francis' mother in the years that followed her son's murder as she walked home passing our house. The old man Mr Butler passed away a few years afterwards, leaving behind just Mrs Butler. Before the massacre, my mother already knew about loss. She was well acquanited with how a death of a child would wrent apart and change the landscape of a family's senses and understanding. She knew what it was to bury a son and along with them, that sparkle of what once was and what could and should have been. She knew how my father had been changed overnight, from a happy-go-lucky joker to a serious and at times silent man who might explode, just as Mr Butler probably had been changed. Yes, my mum knew all about that void just as Mrs Butler now did, her face a grey, cold shroud, ghosts hidden behind her eyes as she passed, keeping up appearances with a thin smile only if absolutely needed for politenesses sake. Mrs Butler eventually joined her son and husband many years later but in reality, she died on that balmy August day in 1987. So, that's prety much how it was from my personal experience.
