When I was stationed at Lejeune I would see Harriers sometimes parked on the side of the road going out the back gate. Guess they needed emergency maintenance but when I was on the Nassau a Harrier was landing while we were driving into the well deck. It had to be 200 decibels!

The USMC AV-8B fleet currently consists of 87 aircraft and 12 trainers. Those numbers will drop to 48 and 4 on October 1st. The USMC had planned to keep Harrier II thru 2026, but now wants to get rid of the aircraft ASAP to cull Marines for active duty to save money. The AV-8B's short range, small payload, and miniscule time on station made it nearly useless in Afghanistan, slightly better in Iraq. It and the Air Force's A-10 are considered unsuitable for combat against peer/near peer adversaries with remotely modern air defense. The Air Force is dumping as many A-10s as quickly as possible. The Harrier II was effective against 3 guys with AKMs, 1 RPG and a donkey but not much else. During my time in Helmand we always preferred CAS from the tiny Italian AMX attack aircraft (kinda like the little planes in Hot Shots 1 & 2). Now that plane could really put steel on target, and the Italian pilots never said a target was too dangerous like our Marine Air Wing pilots did very regularly.

I was an F-15c pilot in the air force from the late 70's thru the early 90's. I loved refueling "navy style", even the the air force method is by far the more efficient method. It is easier, particularly in bad weather, and the boom method transfers fuel a LOT faster, but its incredibly rewarding to slide your probe smoothly into the basket, then add a touch of thrust to get a positive lock. Its not at all difficult in smooth air, but throw in some weather and it gets tricky fast.

My dad was a boom operator in a C130 AZ guard for years and he said the tricky ones are refueling jets with stall speeds that are greater than the 130’s top speed! They had to climb to top altitude then descend to increase speed while the jet was miles behind them then about halfway down they were going fast enough to hook up. They had only a couple minutes to hook up! But then, they had to literally drag the jet along at full boom extension and when they unhooked at significant speed below the jets stall speed, it dropped like a bomb and then took off like a rocket!

I'm a veteran of untold number of attempts at mid-air refueling while playing Top Gun on a Nintendo console with my daughter back in the 1990s. I can't recall if I even had _one_ successful refueling.

PS air to air refueling is very tricky, guys saying that they do it all the time on their PlayStation game consoles don't have a clue. The A-400 aircraft is actually the amazing piece of equipment in this video. The USAF wanted to buy 60+, the USN wanted 18, and the USMC wanted 28 but Congress said NFW its not American made but the USAF can purchase 48 more C-17s. The USAF said no and the C-17 assembly line closed a decade ago. Now the A-400 is the only large transport made in the GLOBAL MINORITY (collective West) and is enjoying many new sales successes. If something can by f$&ked up, my US Government can do it.

Papi, do you know that the a400m could not satisfy requirements that the C-17 could? One can carry an abrams tank into a fob, the other cannot carry ANY type of tank. One can carry up to 10 humvees and has almost double the payload. I'll let you guess which one can do what. A400 might be enough for a smaller military force like the French, but definitely not for the US... the US military had those requirements already met by the C-130. We needed a larger aircraft to carry heavier cargo into austere locations a C-5 could not land into, hence the need of the C-17. Do some research before you post things online.

I’m not sure any games where you can do this other than DCS the flight simulator and trust me it is not easy in that either 🤣 I try it in VR and all I’ve heard so far was “you’re taking fuel” for 10 seconds and then I disconnect instantly after hours of practice, but yes it’s insanely hard and I heard it takes people months to master, even in the simulator.

@@PietriGuitars I don't think they wanted to transport Abrams tanks. Yes, the C-130J is a fine aircraft, but you can't just upgrade and upgrade and upgrade a 70 y.o. construction. For some purposes the A400M IS better suited than the C-130J. For example, If empty, the C-130J can operate from shorter runways, than the A400M. But as soon as you put some trucks or an IFV in it and fuel it up to the max, the A400M performs much better than the C-130J and it can land, where the C-17 can't. They all have their niche.

I play a game called Armed Air Forces on my Android. And it is hard AF to mid-air refuel in the Harrier yo. Gotta stay level, maintain speed, and have impeccable aim to even do so. And I think I got like 2gal of fuel the one time I was remotely successful at it. The game is pretty generous with the "hitbox" for a successful connection. So super shout out to this dude for getting even this close. Shit's hard! Lol
