Indeed there is one sheep's opinion that the he is concerned about: the one that states that the Lannisters are lions, the predator that must be feared. What he does not care is the folk opinion about the action he takes in the persuit of his objectives.

I think most of these arguments are missing the forest for the trees… the only true hypocrisy is that he doesn’t truly value his family expect for political purposes… he doesn’t love them, he sees them as pawns and his loyalty towards the family is formed as a crude worship only in name without truly valuing his real family. All of this is explained by this single flaw not multiple flaws. He doesn’t respect his kids, which is why he doesn’t hold himself to the same standards as he holds them. Tywin likely never respected anyone as an equal, however we do know that he’s not arrogantly blind as we quickly saw and respected the intellect of Arya Stark. This flaw is central to his character, his cruelty towards enemies is tactical in nature (castamere and starks), to send an important message to the rest of the realm not senseless cruelty like Joffrey did, which is why he advised against it. Coming back to this flaw, he lost his mind after losing his wife… which is why he denies to acknowledge the single person in the realm who is intellectually his equivalent, Tyrion. He hates Tyrion so deeply that he never gets over it, that eventually leads to his downfall. Tywin would’ve gotten his Lannister Dynasty if he didn’t hate Tyrion for the death of his wife. This is great writing, because the character is wrong but understandable. His response about Mountains actions is also intentionally misleading, why would he be honest to the Dorne prince? This video criticizes Tywin for not being a simple character. Doing contradictory things doesn’t make the character hypocritical if there’s further depth to it. In fact, this depth does exist and Tywin is a complex character.

I think this video and the comments have a lot of good points about Tywins flaw. To me his biggest flaw isn't particularly a character flaw, but rather the "Dynasty" thing. If you look at the books and saw how he felt about about his dad Tytos Lanister, if you look at how he talks about the targaryans and what HE remembers about them vs what arya talked about, if you look at how he treats his family, if you even just look at the characters introduction where he gets immediately defensive towards Jamie about "So the Lion does concern itself with the opinion of the sheep" that seen clearly shows his hypocrisy very clearly cause he's basically just Jamie with the his tussle with ned in the streets, but bigger. Why does he reffer to it as fact? Why is it that when he does it its good, but when Jamie does it its stupid? because he is what the Lannister name will be remembered for and all the decisions he makes are all good. "We are no longer a house to be feared" speaks volumes to it being ALL about how the Lannister name will be remembered. He's obssessed with the Lannisters having a long reign and the security that the Targaryans had. Which is why when Joffrey the actual lowest of the Lannisters tells him that maybe they should worry about the dragons he openly ignores it because the last thing he wants is to lose all the progess they've made, especially by the Dynasty he wants to be better then. TL;DR His greatest flaw is truly that he has an inferiority complex when he compares his political prowess to the Dynasty of the Targaryans, he will do anything to reach the goal of being greater then that Dynasty. Its why he's such a genius who is 3 steps ahead and he will do ANYTHING to get as far as possible as early as possible. Even if it Tortures his children or makes him look like a horrible person/sheep that he pretends he isn't.

Hypocrite is a little light for Tywin, let's be fair, if the world was actually consistent then Tywin, Cersei, The Mountain and more would have died long before the show started. But the story is written by a nihilist who thinks being honorable and true is stupid and not basically a mutual agreement of good behaviour. The fact Tywin didn't wake up with his throat slit as a teenager due to his actions against the Reigns and Tarbecs just goes to show what kind of insane favoritism a supposedly 'realistic' story was giving.

George is not a nihilist. A nihilist is someone who thinks the world is completely devoid of meaning and purpose. By that logic, ancient myths depicting the gods as stupid, corrupt and envious were also written by nihilists. Abrahamic religions talking about how the tangible world around us is sinful are nihilists. Anyone who is skeptical and prone to pointing out hypocrisy is a nihilist. George is, at worst, a post modernist who deconstructs fantasy tropes, yet even then, George absolutely loves Tolkien, he frequently indulges in classic fantasy tropes, he writes about the beauty of family, Ned was the protagonist. The politics are meant to be absurd, because they prevent everyone from looking towards real threats. But that's besides the point. George, despite being interested in moral complexity, clearly believes in meaning and moral behavior. If he didn't, he wouldn't portray vile, disgusting human beings like Tywin, Cersei, Roose, Ramsay or Euron wouldn't be antagonists. George isn't making a nihilistic statement, he's making social commentary. Again, George is a tiny bit of a postmodernist, that doesn't make him a nihilist.
