Join the Makers Mob and get your first month for 75% off: rlnk.cc/woodworkersworkbench I've been in this shop for 8 years and it's come a long way. It started as an empty garage with a leaky roof and my continual upgrades and improvements have paid off. It's now near the point where everything I use in the shop have a specific place and can be efficiently organized.

People want to know more about The Doors? That's amazing. Jim wasn't with us very long and his recording career didn't last that long. I think it's crazy that people still want to know more about them.

Thanks for the shop tour. Enjoyed hearing about your plans. Norm Abrams made the point about drawers over shelves a long time ago. I took his advice. You are most definitely right about horizontal surfaces becoming de facto storage areas. I fight that demon constantly.

I like the drill press cabinet. Bits are all well organized & it’s easy to see what you need. I’d put frame & panel doors to keep dust off. Maybe glass/plexiglas panels to easily see what’s needed.

Very excited about the high bench. I still love the drill press wall cabinet but understand it’s served for long enough and usefulness has changed. Maybe leave the top rail or border trim on the big doors unpainted?

Posting small and simple projects is great for folks like me that barely know which end of a hammer to hold. Love the ‘big’ projects, too, but big and small have a lot of your knowledge, tips, and tricks in them.

Nice set up for the time being, and nice plans - looking forward to "completion" and to see if you're happy with it. Drawers versus Cabinets - nice point. I'll be following up on that.

How about putting a French cleat, or similar system, on the toolbox so it can be hung on the wall near the drill press, but also be taken down easily and moved around if you need to. It is a big enough toolbox to count for a small wall cabinet so might as well use it as one.

Very well organized, John. Sadly for me, once it's out of sight I no longer have it, so I can't put stuff behind doors or in drawers any more. :( When I was younger cabinets and drawers were great. Now, mostly shelves.

Also, do you ever sell any of your projects that you don't want/need or have moved on from? I'd think things like that toolbox would sell like hotcakes, should you ever want to. I'm sure you also reuse a lot of projects and just update them.
@IBuildItScrapBin3 жыл бұрын
Selling generally involves shipping, so for something like the toolbox it not worth the hassle. And then not many people would be willing to pay what it's actually worth, when they can buy a perfectly suitable plastic one for $49.99.

@@IBuildItScrapBin understood. I dont think I'd balk at having a Heisz original to store my carving knives in. But then, there is a lot of satisfaction in building one yourself (or my best attempt anyway). Love the new shop layout but it does seem to pressure me into organizing my space a lot better : ) I can't seem to focus if my work area is cluttered, or that's what I tell myself. Curious about what you'll get up to with the CNC.

@@IBuildItScrapBin PS: I was going to suggest raffling off the toolbox but (a) shipping in Canada is a killer, and (b) using it for drillbits is a good idea. Totally with you on drawers being the best for storage.

Hi John, So if I understand correctly, the doors that are covering the lumber rack don't hang on the track, it's just there for guidance? The doors weight is supported by the wheels?

Nice shop! Looking good. I never have bought into a drawer in a drawer or a drawer behind a door (as some do in kitchen cabinets) . Personally I don't like having to open a door and then pull out a drawer or open a drawer and then have to open another drawer to get to what I need. Why not just make 2 drawers? Or in kitchen cabinets, why have doors covering your drawers? Your drawer in a drawer is very cool and has a wow factor. Personally I just don't ever like to move something to get to something. That's just my preference. If a drawer in a drawer works for you, awesome!
@billj56453 жыл бұрын
I think a short video on the wood storage closet would be of interest and you could take shots of various parts now after the fact. I would be interested in how the guides at the top work. Also the verticals and horizontals that actually support the wood. I agree that the doors are pretty self explanatory and you could skip that part.

If you build storage with a spot for everything, you might still be short of storage because there are misc. things that still don't have a spot, or you take something out of its spot, use it, and need to set it down somewhere. Or you buy new materials and lay them somewhere while you are using them. There is just always a drain on your open spaces. I've decided that you need an extra 10% or more storage not assigned to anything so you can use it for the misc. stuff. I see this in your videos frequently- there is stuff laying out somewhere that isn't in its proper place. Only when I expanded storage beyond the 100% did that relieve the need for things to be laying out on benches. Maybe the pressure is to have every single little thing organized and in its place. This becomes so tedious that I can't face up to it.
@emptytomb49673 жыл бұрын
that would be a good video, the psychology of storage.
@IBuildItScrapBin3 жыл бұрын
Well, it's a workshop and not a showroom, so to do the work things need to be in a certain amount of flux. Also a level of discipline is good to keep you from adding stuff that you don't actually need. I knew a guy that had a garage filled with junk tools he bought at yard sales, often 4 or 5 of the same thing. I'm talking in particular about the tools and fasteners that you normally use and making specific places for those to be when you aren't using them.
