In the 1970s, an outwardly wholesome family begins cracking at the seams over the course of a tumultuous Thanksgiving break. Frustrated with his job, the father, Ben (Kevin Kline), seeks fulfillment by cheating on his wife, Elena (Joan Allen), with neighborhood seductress Janey (Sigourney Weaver). Their teenage daughter, Wendy (Christina Ricci), dabbles in sexual affairs too -- with Janey's son Mikey (Elijah Wood). The family's strained relations continue to tauten until an ice storm strikes.

The cast in this movie is so good. First you have the older generation of actors playing the parents or adults like Kevin Klein, Sigorney Weaver, Joan Allen and Allison Janney then the younging..Tobey McGuire, Christina Ricci, Elijih Woods and Katie Holmes. All of these actors in one movie is talent galore. Interesting that the young ones now can play the parents.

I was engaged throughout because of the good writing and when it was over, I felt a deep sense of sadness. It's like these people are all trapped inside an ice storm that will never go away.

I left the theater feeling empty and blaming it on the movie. After another viewing, I realize that's exactly the point. It's now one of my favorites, and the ending, from "New Canaan, ConneCticut" through the blackout, is simply perfection.

In its tone, this trailer is actually quite misleading relative to any trailer for any movie produced after 1980. I highly recommend “The Ice Storm”, in spite of some revelations made here, though I regret the H.D. version is exclusively available on the Criterion Blu-ray, at least in Canada.

The movie is great. It's definitely one of my top 100. The trailer, however, looks like a parody by Mad TV. The stupid text, the oily off-screen voice. Well, ultimately, the studios have the power. Again, it's funny to imagine how this trailer lured people into the film who like "Gilmore Girls", for example. The smile changes to a distraught frown. :-))

I would have said "sappy," with the honeyed narration, but yes, if I'd never read the novel and saw this trailer, I'd assume it was a very different kind of film and not as interesting as it is. It shows to me that Fox didn't really know what to do with the movie. Not surprising it tanked in theaters and only found its audience later.

I don't know if this is an American thing, but this movie didn't gave any emotional outburst in my country. Maybe it is because of the difference of cultures and this movie is based in a specific era in the USA... I found the movie completely unsensical, boring and uninteresting. I mean, which interest can bring the story of two well-off families and their supposed "problems" of the first world which consist basically in their sexual life? And that gratuitous death at the end... I was like WTF when the movie ended.

@@conatcha I'm not American and I'm not well-off, but I enjoyed this film. Firstly, it was initially poking fun at the lives of the relatively privileged (especially during the key party). Secondly, the reality is, *all* families have problems. You don't have to be poor to know emotional trauma and tragedy. Thirdly, this film was directed by a non-American, a Taiwanese filmmaker, whose background presumably could not be more different from the lead characters.

@@conatcha It's hard to explain. Maybe it's because I saw this film in the theater when it first came out (being a fan of Sigourney Weaver and Kevin Kline), but it affected me. It's an aesthetically beautiful film, but I found sadness and poignancy in the characters' inability to connect, and the younger generation's sexual experimentation. Also, I think the very late tragedy is meant to be a commentary on the selfishness and inattentiveness of the adult characters for the bulk of the film. They're so wrapped up in their own needs that they neglect those of their children. Kevin Kline's character breaks down in the final shot, even though it's not his kid who died, because he knows that he is part of the problem. It's the self-absorption and bad parenting of people like him, that led to his neighbour/mistress' child dying.

Just by the trailer I'm certain I will never watch this movie. I remember the great ice storm and it was terrible and wonderful. Who wants to watch a messed up bunch of losers. That storm was so much more than the pathetic lives of selfish arrogance as shown in this movie.
