Idk, I would be fascinated to see 2016 Trump Debate 2016 Bernie. Hilary got schooled in the debates, and I think that's worth quite a bit back then. She was already kinda unpopular, and then she made a fool of herself trying to fight Trump at his level. There is, but it's not a main factor. It's pretty fringe because there is no need to dog whistle regularly when Trump's America-First policies benefit them. In fact, I would say that they benefit many Americans, which is why he gained so much support from the working class of various backgrounds. And you could say the same dog whistling happens with Dems when it comes to illegal immigration. After all, there is a reason that there are increased migrant caravans whenever they are in office.

The problem is even that is not working. Trump made gains with college-educated voters - especially young men. What's really going on here is less about higher education and more about a crumbling society that increasingly benefits only a certain class of people. Many college-educated people still benefit from the existing order, with their corporate jobs, 401ks, and decent benefits packages, but that's not sustainable for the entire population. That's why populism on both the left and the right is on the rise. It's predictable as conditions for most Americans decline.
