The Ssi-Ruuvi Imperium was an Empire of Dinosaurs with some strange tech called entchment, which Palpatine wanted and which may have held the secret to immortality.

Reading the Darth Bane trilogy, you realize how twisted Palpatine's plans were- even by Sith standards. He was perfectly willing to live forever with Vader as his loyal lap dog, rather than ever letting Vader surpass him as the Rule of Two intended.

Well also keep in mind that Darth Sidious viewed himself as the Sith’ari, and Darth Plagueis literally trained him under the precept that the Rule of Two had been abolished, at least in legends. In the Plagueis novel, one of the first things Darth Plagueis teaches him is that the Banite Sith Order and Doctrine has been superseded by their fulfillment of the Grand Imperative. It’s basically the only reason why Sidious ever decides to be open about his training of Darth Maul. Had Plagueis not condemned the rule of two as an anachronism, he never would’ve allowed Sidious to take on Maul as an apprentice, although the extent to which Sidious divulged the true nature of his partnership with Maul is left vague, as it’s clear he definitely trained Darth Maul as a full Sith Lord with full rank and entitlement, and refers to him as such in private, though to Plagueis always referenced him as a mere assassin and myrmidon. So legends Sidious definitely considered the rule of 2 completely superseded and of no consequence. It was an old doctrine that had no bearing on his Sith order.

My favorite part of Star Wars is that one group/person would have the exact solution to someone else’s huge major problem and vice versa - and neither side takes advantage of this because they either are too convinced of their own superiority or straight up didnt know

This species was always so creepy to me. The Truce at Bakura was a interesting story. I was never put off by how they looked as to me they were no more creepy than a Trandoshan or a Barbel both of which were just as ferocious as a Ssi-Ruvi. What creeped me out the most was this tech.... What possessed them to go down this particular technological route and more importantly... why?? There must be far easier ways to generate power or at least that was my impression when reading the book.

It's probably derived from Rakatan force-powered tech, mixed in with the same tech used for Rakatan Mind Prisons for longevity. It would explain why Force-sensitives make better batteries than other organics.

@@demi-femme4821That's terrifying and scary that even after thousands of years people in the Star Wars galaxy were still trying resurrect the tech of that horrorific empire. Even though technically when the book was written they didn't exist it makes sense. Spirit devouring dinosaur people were nightmare fuel as a kid. As if being eaten was bad enough.

I almost wonder if they were a Rakatan slave race like the proto-Tuskens and Jawas on Tatooine, entechment just seems way too cruel, barbaric, and similar to be unrelated to the straight-up proto-Sith Dark Side experiments of the Rakatan Infinite Empire

@@demi-femme4821 i honestly like more the idea that the Ssi ruk and others liek the kiliks had no influence on rakata orother old main galaxy stuff for 2 main reasons one I hate them and the concept and how everything has to be connected and 2 I love how much like the vong but not as edgy they are completely alien yet came at a similar tech level but with a unknown weird path makes them more fun than the other 99% of species

The implications are quite fascinating, imagine it, cloning beings en masse, then transferring their essence into HRD bodies, Droid fighters and capital ships for an immortal Iron Army. A true fusion of man and machine.

I'm honestly surprised the Yuuzhan Vong would bother with sneaky destabilization in the Ssi'ruuvi's case. You would think entechment -- literally discarding the organic for the hated technological -- would have sent them into a religious fury at the blasphemy of it, and they would have just wiped the Ssi'ruuvi from the face of the Galaxy for it, like they did to so many other species. I had completely forgotten they were even mentioned in NJO at all, and had just assumed they ended up on the "Vong wiped them out" list like so many other former antagonists in the Legends books. Looks like I'll have to modify my fanfic, where I was planning on the Empire of the Hand shooing them away from Chiss Ascendency space and following them to Lwhekk, only to find the Ssi'ruuk's homework as an early casualty of the Vong. Is Lwhekk itself mentioned in NJO? If it isn't I suppose I could still go with that idea.

Yeah that part was a bit hard to believe. Also the description of the Ssi-Ruu revealing to actually be a Yuuzhan Vong wearing an ooglith masquers was absolutely ridiculous and made me laugh as I imagined Yuuzhan Vong warriors being all hunched over and bent like a dinosaur for weeks. I really wish the story ended up being like a three way battle between the Bakurans/Galactic Alliance, Yuuzhan Vong, and Ssi-ruu. Lwhekk isn't really mentioned, but it is on like the complete opposite side of the Unknown Regions as Helska IV so it's not like the Yuuzhan Vong would have been able to easily get there (especially since travel in the Unknown Regions was really hard).

@@DarkVaati13 one of the ideas for my fics is that the Vong actually *started* their invasion shortly after Endor, at Lhwekk. But when the Empire of the Hand (personally led by Thrawn at the time) responded by wiping the planet from the face of the Galaxy, they got the message "maybe this isn't the best place to start", and spent another decade and a bit swinging all the way around the Galactic Rim, looking for a new "Vector Prime".

Nichos Marr's story was weird in that it came out of nowhere kind of, but I think the implication was that it wasn't "really" Nichos, it was just an AI meant to be Nichos, but the "real" Nichos was dead by that time. It wasn't meant to be sinister or anything, just a sad, empty existence, especially since his love (and creator) was in denial about the whole thing, while Nichos' AI was surprisingly willing to accept that the true Nichos was dead. I think it was meant to be a sort of choppy story about acceptance and death more than anything else. That's if I'm remembering CotC correctly, anyway.

I love the idea of a Truce at Bakura sequel/follow up, but the fact that it's wedged this late into NJO made the story really feel like filler and I also thought it wasn't the best.

I was always a fond of the Ssi-ruu, but the part that held me back from really admiring them was the bit of their religion that forbade them from dying away from their homeworld. That to me, and their very real fear of losing their soul if they were to die away from a consecrated world, made me lose any real fear of them becoming a real threat due to that. There was no way in my mind that they could become a real conqueror race like the other reptilian races that had done so in the past for SW. They would never be able to handle a real war when it would inevitably come to them, with their leadership that unable to make the risks needed to become a true force in the galaxy to be reckoned with. Honestly, the most disturbing part of the Truce at Bakura to me was the parasites that Luke had to deal with towards the end, the lungworms were horrifying. Nevermind the entechment, him and Gaeriel being infected by those things was the most traumatizing part of that book when I read it at the age I did. That made me keep thinking about it for a long time, especially with how descriptive the author got with it.

Immortality is as usual overrated. What anyone would seek instead would be very long life (elves nail that aspect in places like Middle-earth), if not a kind of immortality where one can consciously choose when to end things (see Baccano). And even then, Palpatine seems to have been forgotten after a few generations without his machinations. Ah, I still remember that time Lex Luthor in the DC Animated Universe remarked on that very outcome. Edit: And then there's interesting perspectives on legacied immortality in stuff like Babylon 5's "The Deconstruction of Falling Stars"... Star Wars needs to make a longrunning tale based on that.
