Emem Okon, the Executive Director of Kebetkache Women Development & Resource Centre narrates the work Kebetkache is putting in the Niger Delta, Nigeria, and the impact of multinationals operating in the region.
The ecological degradation caused by oil extraction forces women to navigate polluted swamps for their economic activities, leading to a decline in crop yields and increased poverty. The direct impact of oil exploration in the #nigerdelta has been felt by everyone living in the area especially the women folks. Some of these issues include ecological degradation, environmental pollution, lack of economic growth, associated human rights abuses, high inflation and loss of livelihood, poor governance, and poor attitudinal response to the concerns of the people of the region by both the government and oil multinationals.
As affected Niger Delta women, we are concerned about the swiftness of these divestment plans by the multinationals because the government has not provided guidelines to resolve pollution issues before SPDC, AGIP, and Total Energies leave. The companies involved have failed to create women's development funds to help victims of oil extraction. Women in the Niger Delta suffer severe environmental consequences of oil extraction. Decades of oil pollution and destitution have placed them in a vulnerable position, impeding subsistence agriculture and causing health complications.
