I have one of these with 211600 miles on it. It's only on its first rebuild and that was 5 years ago. The trick is to remember that the exhaust goes over the transmission and remeber that heat is an enemy. Not many people realized that when they were racing around on these and modding them. After you take care of the heat it will take a little more abuse.

The only issues I had with my impalas was the ac actuator for the ac which was only like $30 or so. Otherwise I never had any issues with any of the ones I own. It’s so weird so many people complain about them.

These are so nice. I've had two. But yeah, the fact that they couldn't engineer a proper transmission, really pisses me off. Like, sure, make it FWD, but give it a proper transmission. It's not like it hasn't been done before. The Oldmobile Toronado had a 7.5 V8 with over 380hp and 500 lb-torque. It could handle it just fine. This could've been a great car, but they half-assed it.

They actually supercharged the 5.3L V8 and put in a stronger transmission. HOT ROD Magazine had a small article on the build. I can’t remember the transmission except that it might’ve come from the G8 from PONTIAC. They also put a shift kit in it and a higher Stahl converter in it. It ran like a scalded Ape. Surprised everyone at stop lights with its deep growl, and was a lot of fun for the journalists. It’s what happens when you let engineers play around with what spare parts they have laying around

could take the honda manual from a j series acura, do the 6th gear delete to replace with a stabilizing cuff for the in/out shafts (common mod), and maybe throw in the 3 & 4 straight-cut gear upgrade. there’s a fwd manual trans that can take 5-600hp pretty well.

4t65-e hd is the transmission it runs. There is a transmission guy that disassembles the 4t65-e and he shows and describes what parts wear fast and why they wear fast. Now the 4t65-e what the 3.5L v6 run. The 4t65-e hd is for the ls4 v8. Same transmission the hd of course is heavy duty. But this guys video is gold because he goes so in depth that you will know what parts to replace. I 100% believe if you can change the right parts out it can become a real sport car. May not move like a vet but it will be able to handle the power. And keep up with some sport cars.

There are people using the northstar 4t80e as an upgrade. Also, the g40 sixspeed manual that was in the g6 gxp will work but both transmissions require physical mods to work. Starter for the g40 manual and case griding for the 80.

My 2007 SS went thru original transmission at 30,000 miles, replaced under warranty with rebuilt one at no charge. That one went just before 60,000 miles, again, replaced with rebuilt under warranty, started to go again just before 80,000 miles, traded it for 2011 LTZ, no issues with this transmission and car.

Lol!! I know All to well about that tranny! Mine went around 180+k but that's I bought it because the GM dealership I bought it had an included Lifetime Powertrain Warranty! Had two water pumps, 3 or 4 front brakes/rotors, new transmission and couple other things too. Just had some idiot driver take it out but planning on building up that 5.3 and dropping it in a 2nd/3rd Gen Firebird, most likely 3rd Gen.
