You speak to me from my heart Daniel. Only when you hold the print in your hand, the creative process of photographing is finished. It is a learning process to select your pictures and to show only the best pictures, printing promotes this learning process. And only the picture in hand or on the wall, ensures a long attention with the picture. For many years now I have been writing and doing workshops on fine art printing, currently for the Leica Akademie in Germany. And that's exactly what my words are to my participants. Best Thomas

Thank you Daniel, watched this last week... Started printing again, started walking again, shooting until MY BATTERY WAS DEAD. Last night with all electronics off started writing out my theme's and idea's on paper. Printed some of the shots and started to sequence them to see if my lenses and my angles are telling the story I want. In other words: Thank you for helping me get back to being grounded and walking around my island of Aruba looking for stories to be told in an encapsulated format. Hope ta make something worthwhile... Hope

I can absolutely relate to his reasoning. I started printing some of my photos, Because I felt they just "Collect Digital Dust", However most (if not all) of the prints were 8x10 prints for hanging on the wall. I absolutely agree with the fact that printing required critical editing. I can't begin to describe how satisfying is to hold a print of your photo. I thought of printing more and more of my photos, And have a cohesive photo shoots that have a common narrative, Then printing them. And I would love to have some practical examples by Daniel on how to create a photo magazine with Blurb's tools. I tried to use their software, But the photo book templates are too "Book"-ish, And magazines are too text oriented - And I was looking something more of his style of printing. A story magazine with a narrative, a travel magazine from my last trip - Etc. He has a few videos at Blurb but the production quality is... How can I say that delicately? mmm... Disastrous :)

I am so glad I stumbled on Milnor's page, wherever that was. He puts into words what I have been trying to wrap my head around with respect to the photography I want to do and the way I want to go about it. It's taken me a while to realize a simple point - people use the word editing so differently. In the online world he mentions, it's sitting at a coffee shop with a laptop and Lightroom working on an image. With Milnor's photography, editing relates to story and narrative.

Excellent video... I have started printing recently and you are right, printing will push you to make cut throat decisions about your photographs since you are financially committed (and that hurts if it's not done right). My next project is Coffeetable book. Once I have decided, I was surprised to find that I just have good "images", but nothing more to it. Now I am chasing something more than a image to make this book.

Damn, still feel like that person should have known about them because that's what we are lacking, visual literacy. It's like a writer not knowing who Borges is or a painter not knowing who Monet is. Everyone can take pictures now but it's important to know who made it possible to be where we are

Thank you, Daniel. Interestingly and convincingly put. Tight editing, sequencing, and just learning to develop that perspective about one's work as a finished product in print can be immensely valuable to one's growth, not just as a maker of images but also and perhaps more as a coherent storyteller.

So true. Did a shoot two weeks ago in NYC. Shot 1500 images. First edit to 200; second edit to 35; final edit to 16. Entering a competition w those images as a series and still need to do a tight edit of 10. My undergrad is in English. Profs would say, to cut your essays you need to "kill your darlings" - those great, beautifully written lines that, well, don't work w the overall scheme of the work. Same holds true in photography. Painful, but sometimes we gotta let them go.....Sequencing: Well, that's an art in and of its self. MMM

I have an ongoing Zine/magazine which is a tribute to the original Life Magazine, a publication that was hugely influential in me becoming a photographer. I was published in Life exactly ONE time. However, I took this influence and created a Zine series titled ESSAY. Printed in two sizes at the same time.

I don’t think I edit as well as I should, but I’ve realised however many photos I take on a trip somewhere the final selection which goes on my Flickr or website always comes down to 30 or less, which I’m pretty sure comes from having done most photography before digital. You got out the pack of photos which came back, that was all you had to look at or show, and that was always enough. 😂

What you said is that it's not print that is important, but editing. You can shoot 10 rolls of C-41 film, go to lab, develop and print them .You end with 360 photos from vacation. How professional is this print? It is print! It is pro! Sure, industry want prints, but industry is old and slow changing. Posting on internet does not make you and less (or more) professional. You just chose different medium. Putting it into different perspective: it's like choosing diapositive (slide I think is proper english term) vs negative. How is one more or less professional then the other? Printing is seen as pro because most of pro photographs are going into printed media: newspapers, books, adverts. But all those are moving into digital space. More and more newspapers are read online instead of printed. People look for photo books and photo galleries in internet, instead of going to bookstore.
