I had the same issue with headphone jacks but I found a cheap and simple solution. Buy a 1/8" male to 1/8" female, then just plug your headphones into that. But don't remove the adapter from the recorder. That way you don't wear out the recorders female port, you wear out the adapters port instead. It's much easier on the wallet to replace a cheap 2-3$ adapter than it is an entire recorder.

But ridiculous that you have to do this after spending $$$ on the equipment in the first place.

You should also get a right angled mini jack adapter, it puts less pressure on the skinny little mini jack port by sticking out less and not getting caught on stuff.

Audio is such an under appreciated element in movies, and the primary reason (I think) is that when it's done correctly, it isn't something the average viewer notices on a conscious level. I noticed right from the first film of yours that I watched (Lights Out) how much of an emphasis you put on sound. I'd never seen a short YT film with that much richness in crisp audio. I especially liked the touches you added where we hear the heavy buzzing of the flickering light, and the little *click* when she manages to finally put the plug in the power strip.
@ponysmasher10 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Glad you noticed and I agree, the sound is usually the main giveaway that you're watching a low budget film.

I think your videos are some of the most creative and effective entries into the horror genre on KZbin, they all make me want to continue aspiring to be a filmmaker. This video was also very informative and insightful, sound is probably equally important to the visual aspect of movies. I come from an audio world, so crossing over into filmmaking, and watching a bunch of amatuer films with bad audio, I feel like I kinda have a leg up. I was worried about issues with field recorders like you're having, I was super picky about what I purchased. I went with Tascam because I'd used their recording equipment in bands in the past. I've never used zoom's products, and hear everyone raving about them, but I'm a creature of habits so I stuck with what I am familiar with. I'm really impressed with it. Thank you for sharing your experiences. I didn't think to have the actors re-record their dialog like you mentioned. I'll have to give that a try. Thanks again. Happy filming!

Different width pvc pipe can be used to make a retractable boom, for fairly easy and cheap. The headphone jack issue is from repeated stress on the jack(pulling on the cord left and right over and over during use. You can normally resolder the original jack back to the board, or replace the jack for almost nothing( the soldering really isn't that hard.) Audio Jacks are the absolute bane of everything audi. They have a terrible failure rate on everything i've ever used with any regularity. I hope to see some sort of buffering wifi/bluetooth gadget released that removes the cables while keeping the clarity(one can dream(though honestly This isn't asking for anything very complicated(maybe it exists and I just don't know about it.))

When using REAPER, have you considered a more efficient layout that gives you extra screen space to use for editing? If you grab the master track (by holding left-click on the little tab below it) you can move it to the right and then slide that section so only the master bus is visible. That way all your vertical screen space is available!

Marantz makes some nice recorders like the PMD661MK2 that are in my opin a step up from Zoom and Tascam they do cost a little bit more. And if you ever do get the budget then Sound Devices is in a whole other class but they make some fantastic Field Recorders, but if sound is ultra important as it is for you with the way you use it, then it might be worth investing in something top notch down the road, instead of buying many less reliable pieces of consumer gear do it one time, as SD are also very reliable work horse machines. I have one of there MixPre mixers and its built like a tank never any issues with headphone jacks ever. Just some ideas. I have to say your short movies are fantastic, so well done also love all the behind the scenes footage keep up the great work, love watching your films. I hope you get a KickStarter together to fund a full feature film, I am sure the community would help fund it, with your proven ability to do so much with so little, let us all know. If you ever do decide to upgrade to a slightly fancier stick check out the Falcon Boom Pole on Ebay from Lux Cinema they are quite good made of carbon fiber and much cheaper then all others but well made for the price and much lighter then any painter stick just my 2 cents. You guys rock!
