A young man succumbed to death while enjoying a baseball game, and over the years of spectators gathering to see the sport, he wasn't the only one. Darkening the Giants-Dodgers game, or a Padres-Dodgers game, and even a local match at one time, baseballs can do so much more by hitting you right out of left field. So how much damage could really be caused from a stray baseball, and why does this keep happening anyway? Let's get into it!

I think the saddest death I’ve heard of was Shannon Stone back 11-12 years ago. One of the players tossed a ball into the stands, he tried to catch it and ended up going over the railing and falling 20 feet onto his face. All with his son standing right there. Sure, it’s not the worst fall or the bloodiest injury, but knowing his son was RIGHT THERE as a freak accident took his dad away from him is just heartbreaking.

I've never really questioned how dangerous it is, because I saw it in person as a kid at a minor league game. A pop up foul ball came down on a bald man's head and he was quickly covered in blood. They paused the game for just a moment so medical folks could get him out of the stadium, then kept going.

@@sololeveling7390There's no "accidentally" kicking each other's foot in football, as a player only ever launches a kick when a ball is right in front of him. The thing with Alan Fish seems like malpractice, what doctor wouldn't know that swelling or bleeding in the brain would take a little time to cause enough pressure and that he should immediately be rushed to a hospital? Even Phineas Gage seemed "fine" walking and talking after his accident and he had a metal rod shot clean through his skull from the jaw and out the top. If not for a doctor that worked tirelessly keeping him alive while unconcious with brain swlling and necrosis he would have died soon after. Maybe they should provide batting helmets for anyone in the stands not covered by netting or fence.

He was an NHL player who had his throat cut by a skate in a freak accident in 1989 while playing goalie for the Quebec Nordiques. Multiple fans had heart attacks, some fainted, and some fellow players vomited at the sight of it. He ultimately survived and continued to play. I know it's unrelated but it is by far the closest example that I know of: In Labour law regarding payment of compensation, an employee shall not be given compensation for an injury or disablement if the injury was caused due to the employees negligence, recklessness or intention. However compensation will be required to be paid if it results in permanent disablement or death. Even in labour law, compensation must be paid for death or permanent disability even if such death or disability was caused intentionally by the employee or due to his/her own negligence or recklessness.

I truly believe that compensation to the family and victim, and complete coverage of medical fees must be paid if injury causes Death or Permanent disability. Regardless of the fact that precautions were taken, warnings were given, and the fact that audience attend the games with their own express consent.

These deaths are unfortunate but they have warnings and reasonable safety precautions. Holding them accountable would be the same as someone suing their state bc their family member died in a car crash so they argue it's the states fault for allowing them to get a drivers license. They knew the danger and they accepted said danger.

How about making it a rule for all spectators to wear batting helmets as well? I mean, I don't care about baseball, but I've always thought those balls are quite hard and by how fast they pitch them and how hard they bat... seems like a safety hazard to me. Funny things about foul balls coming from an old catcher is that they can deflect off the bat in a way that increases the speed of the ball compared to the pitch.
@BrettShadow
@BrettShadow 10 ай бұрын
Funny thing about this coming from someone who has a basic understanding of physics, that is a physical impossibility. The deflection changes the balls trajectory in reference to your perspective.
@30803080308030803081
@30803080308030803081 10 ай бұрын
I suppose that’s possible, because the ball’s spin will change when it collides with the bat, and the way it’s spinning influences the speed.
@BrettShadow
@BrettShadow 10 ай бұрын
@30803080308030803081 It's similar to the idea that a 4seam FB rises. It doesn't. It just doesn't drop at the rate our brains expect it to when compared to other pitches. Our system has trouble with depth perception in relation to relative velocity. Hence why the first major safety measure on automobiles was the brake light. So when a ball is traveling towards you, it is difficult to compute the relative velocity when compared to seeing the same ball moving across our ield of vision perpendicular or at an angles trajectory. When the ball moving toward a catcher is deflected it goes from an object that we are trying to locate based on the diameter increasing as it get closer to seeing the velocity in a way that we are more capable of determining that velocity. When a ball strikes anything and deflects, it transfers some of its potential energy to that object and the loss of that energy results in a decreased velocity. It is a physical impossibility to transfer energy into to ball by deflection off of an object (bat) moving in the opposite direction or a static object (batter/plate/pigeon/etc)

No sport is 100% safe. Some are safer than others, but none are foolproof. In just the right (or rather, the wrong) circumstances, just going for a jog or run can be perilous.

@@hammer.11011 You have conflated "game" and "sport". Many sports are games, and many games are sports, but they aren't always the same thing. An activity can be one without necessarily being the other. For example, automobile racing is considered a "sport", but isn't really a "game" per se. Things like Chess or Backgammon are the other way around, "games" that aren't "sports" as they do not require any particular athleticism.
