Rocky Marciano would never have beaten Joe Louis in his prime. Joe was out of boxing, haven’t had a fight in two years, and was pressured by the IRS so much so until he took that fight. And I believe, I could be wrong, that the IRS took every penny of that purse. I believe Frank Sinatra eventually paid off Joe Louis’s tax debt.

Joe Louis is arguably the GOAT. His record = 69 fights - 66 wins with only 3 losses, all to world champions, 2 after comeback from retirement & one before becoming the champion due to inexperience (which he avenged) with 52 KOs (75%). Was World Heavyweight Champion for 12 years, a record for HW with 26 title fight victories, a record for any division. He fought 8 genuine world champions (unlike the alphabet soup champions of today). No other HWC even comes close to his record.

Louis was great beyond great. That's an understatement. One of the hardest hitters--ever. But to correct one thing. Schmeling wasn't an ardent Nazi. Yes, ol' adolph held him up as a poster boy for the Nazis, but Schmeling was never a believer. Hitler sent Schmeling off to the war in response for his losing the second fight to Louis, or so the articles say. Schmeling and Louis became friends years after the war was over, and Schmeling often slipped Joe money after the IRS took his cash away and left him destitute. Also paid for Louis's funeral.

@@whitneywilliams317 I agree with you 100%, if for no other reason, the belt isn't unified anymore. I'd give a chance for someone to be IBF or WBO champ for 12 years, but not unified between all the organizations. Larry does have the 2nd most title defenses in a row next to Joe Louis though. he was just as active as Louis, fighting every few months. The only thing that Larry lacked was knockout power. He just couldn't KO guys cold like Louis did. When Larry Ko'ed it was mostly TKO with the guy still conscious or giving up. Joe Louis was the most powerful and fastest punching heavyweight boxer in ring history. His great hand speed, especially in combination, was awesome to behold. He had a powerful jab, threw every punch perfectly and with wasteless accuracy. His right cross, thrown short and straight, was sheer dynamite. The "Brown Bomber" never ducked anyone as his record 25 title defenses attests to. Of those 25 successful defenses, 21 were won by knockout, 17 of those were ten counts! 5 in the first round! He also knocked out six men who held the Heavyweight Championship of the World. From 1934 to 1949, when he first retired as champion, his record was 60-1 with 51 knockouts. He held the Heavyweight Championship for a record of nearly 12 years.

@@ispartacus1337 not to be rude, but yes he was a black man. That's part of the point. He was everything that should have made him the most revered boxer in the world. But he was black. He could have been more than a legend, he could have been a god. But the people who held the power were looking to take away everything because he was black and could hardly make one mistake. The only reason he even got that shot was because the nazis were on the rise. It is so important to not take away this part of his story. Same, my GPops always listed 3 people as the best warriors of his lifetime, he played football for his country and some teams won a lot, served in WWII and managed a lot of athletes but he always said if you want to see something special watch the best, respect the work and imitate them if you can. He passed a few months ago at 106yrs old, and his taxes got taxed, his savings got double taxed and a certain organisation even tried to claim ownership over certain items. Long story short, there are vultures everywhere and we should appreciate the fact we stand on the shoulders of giants so we may become giants for those that need to stand on ours in the future.

I met Joe Louis in Toledo, OH in 1952 at a park with a golf course. I was 8 yrs. old and went to the concession stand for an ice cream cone. Suddenly, all I could see were mens belt buckles. light bulb cameras going off.I was picked up as if I were as light as a feather, placed on the counter and asked "What would my lady care for? [I looked into the face of a brown man with huge hands, a beautiful smile and sparkling eyes] an ice cream cone sir. He ordered the largest cone I'd ever seen. I thanked him between licks and introduced myself. "Peggy, when your daddy comes home tonight, tell him you met Joe Louis today." I asked him if he knew my dad. "No but he'll know me!" I told him I would. He picked me up, gently lowered me to the ground. The people opened a path for me. As I walked through, I turned and thanked him again.
