@Melissa D it gets worse if you read the books about this canon. Explaining things. Like how luke taught factors of both light and dark. Before ben was even born. Or how he knew of snoke. He didnt know he was a sith till after he took his nephew but he knew of him. Decided not to go after ben even though he saw all of that mess. Left him for like 10 years to do all of this mess.
@johnpirruccello14326 жыл бұрын
Melissa D HOW is that how people saw the Luke/Kylo flashback? The dialogue says it all “For the briefest moment of pure instinct I thought I could stop it. It passed like a fleeting shadow. And I was left with shame, and with consequence” HE DID NOT THINK BEN WAS UNSAVEABLE. I cannot even handle how poorly this video analyzed not only The Last Jedi but the original trilogy as well. Embarrassingly bad
@Ando14286 жыл бұрын
@Melissa D aparently not cause they the luke rian johnson made decided that for 5 to 10 years luke would let the nephew he accidentally turned into a sith or dark jedi (whichever is prefered) and leave him to commit every travesty his nephew had in his mind that night. That luke would give up and not lift a finger to help him.
@DigitalGame186 жыл бұрын
Consider this: Luke skywalker, arguably at the height of his power for over 30 years in a time of relative galactic peace, spending his days training the next generation of jedi to be different from the last in order to continue his fathers legacy of seeking balance. Luke skywalker who has arguably seen the worst that the galaxy had to throw at him, war, death, loss, and the sheer temptation to just give in and use the dark side of the force. Stepping right up to that edge and managing to bring his foot back down before he went off. Luke, who went through so much turmoil, made so many mistakes, and still managed to pull off the impossible not through sheer force but rather because he still believed in the innate goodness of others despite all the darkness and has lived with that assurance for again, 3 decades. Now take all that, and throw it out the window because one Luke decided to instead of helping the one person who probably needed his help the most, he would instead wait to do anything until he recieved a random jedi vision that showed him a future where this person turns as evil as his father. Luke then decides to kill them not on instinct as so many claim for he had plenty of pre-emptive time to just walk into the room with this person and stare at them for a bit before this vision hits. This attempt fails and instead of trying to make amends Luke decides to completely seperate himself from the one thing that may have helped him reach out to this person and instead designs a convoluted map leading to a planet he exiles himself to so he can die alone, in squalor, and broken without any care to his friends or family while knowing that the person he failed to save is going to grow up to fulfil the destiny he saw in that vision. Now considering these two paragraphs, is it any wonder why people don't like Luke from the last jedi?
@willhiggins95636 жыл бұрын
TheGoodShank First off, we don’t why Luke was watching Kylo sleep. Why’ve been guessing it was out of pride because he was his best student, or concern because he already sensed Snoke’s influence over him. Either way, Luke is plainly clear that his thought of killing Ben was just in that moment and was already regretting before Ben woke up. Afterwards, Kylo had gone off to join Snoke, so how was he supposed to reach out to him? And the map was from old archives, he just hid part of it in R2-D2. As for why he gave up, driving his nephew/best student to the dark side let to conclude that the ideas of the Jedi where inherently flawed, and where part of the same cycle that kept creating Siths, and galactic dictatorships. And there Luke’s character of in VIII explained.
@DigitalGame186 жыл бұрын
And that is where you have failed, you have made excuses for it, not explained it.
@willhiggins95636 жыл бұрын
TheGoodShank Those are the canon explanations.
@DigitalGame186 жыл бұрын
Really, because all the film tells us is that Luke saw unimaginable evil in kylo, it makes the setup and implication but anyone who takes two seconds to actually think about realizes this is just hack writing that makes quick emotional appeal without actually trying to explain anything, just making it so fans have to come up with their own explanations and believe me I've heard them all. The canon changes depending on which answer makes the writer look better which is why I'm fglad it doesn't matter what the actual reason is, because disney is putting these films on hold.
@willhiggins95636 жыл бұрын
TheGoodShank The reasons are here and not to hard to find. Star Wars has always been heavy with symbolism, and Luke represented losing faith when the thing you have in let’s you down. And Disney just put the Kanobi anthology movie on hold, episode IX is still on for next year, with information of the cast still coming in. I just heard Matt Smith will be in it.

This is fun at al...but in reality the only moment that Luke started thinking "There must be some good in him" is only after he found out that Vader was his father. His reaction to Vader killing Obi wan was shooting a bunch of people. He tried to kill Vader on cloud city. He almost killed Vader in return of the Jedi when he got mad. Like i said it's a fun meme but in reality Luke is a pretty grey character, he isn't a shining hero.
@malikjackson93376 жыл бұрын
Francesco Vader was a Sith. Killing him would have made far more sense then to rely on his innate "goodness" to save Luke from Palpatine. Also after all that "Journey of the Hero" and such why would he make a complete 180 after that? He saw that even in a Sith as evil as Vader he knew that there was a human inside the beast. What makes Kylo an exception? (Kylo killed his father and it somehow brought him closer to the light. He can't be that bad) What you call a grey area is the Heroes Journey. You go from having a neutral alignment with some good traits. You go on a journey to come out the hero we all expected. Not really that grey.
@francesco80006 жыл бұрын
Using that logic everyone should have tried to save palpatine. Ok no jokes but seriously Luke has proved many times to NOT be a classic Jedi, at the start of return of the jedi he force choke 2 guards, he shoot first against Jabba and during the duel against vader he allow his rage to control him and almost kill his father before taking control back....which is exactly what he did in episode 8. Damn if we really want to point out something else there are only 2 "Jedi" in the entire series that wear black: Anakin and Luke, everyone else was a sith.
@malikjackson93376 жыл бұрын
Francesco Well I said heroes journey not Jedi's. I mean it's implied several times that the Jedi are not necessarily the heroes. I mean if your definition of a hero is someone who doesn't do harm then you have a very archaic way of looking at it. (Also look at Mace who used force crush like it was his only move. He happens to be one of the most virtuous of the Jedi. He uses the dark side but the dark side doesn't use him) I mean he was consumed by his rage against Vader and denied Palpatine the satisfaction of a new apprentice. If anything Vader was Luke's shadow, a character that mirriors the Hero but corrupted. Luke showed self control and compassion to his father knowing of who he used to be according to Ben Kenobi. While you site it as something morally grey it is actually the most heroic and Jedi thing Luke has ever done. He denied the all consuming power of the darkside and completed his journey instead of giving into his desire for revenge. I mean if you consider almost killing the man who is figuratively space Hitler, who cut your hand off, and murdered billions including your master and friend the same as having a bad vision about your nephew when you could of talked to him then sure it makes perfect sense. Also siddious is the embodiment of the Dark side and has literally given Luke no reason to redeem him. And Luke didn't have a choice in Siddious' fate. Vader did and he had context to how shitty Siddious is. Final point a hero is not someone who lacks flaws. It's a person who recognizes not only the evil of the outside world but within himself. Luke has showed the ability to do both by the end of ROTJ. Why he did a 180 after that is beyond me. P.S His wardrobe was supposed to be a red herring. It was black to throw off the audience into thinking Luke would turn to the dark side. This was cited from the movies costume director, Rob Fletcher. The movie was originally supposed to be called Revenge of the Jedi to reinforce this idea.

@BlankestKnight6 жыл бұрын
@@willhiggins9563 He SHOULD blame himself for Kylo going evil. He tried to kill him from in his sleep. That alone is an act uncharacteristic of Luke Skywalker. You can try and justify it in your mind all you want but that was attempted murder, to his own nephew, the son of his best friend and sister no less.
@willhiggins95636 жыл бұрын
kalzoa22 He THOUGHT about killing someone he sensed would be the next Darth Vader, but he clearly said he was going to go through with. And before you say it was that same fear that drove Kylo to the dark side, THAT’S THE POINY! And Luke is clear on why he is disillusion with the Jedi with the movie. From his point of view, the Jedi always lead to the Sith returning, and even allowed a Sith to take over the Republic on their watch.
@BlankestKnight6 жыл бұрын
Will Higgins The fact that he THOUGHT about killing his own nephew who hadn't done anything wrong is pretty disturbing. I mean, put yourself in Kylo's shoes. Imagine you were sleeping peacefully then wake up to find your uncle who you thought cared about you standing over you in the dark with a gun pulled out ready to blast you in the face. Would "sorry, I just THOUGHT about killing you for a second since you 'might' do some bad stuff later" sound like a good justification for that. Luke himself showed dark side tendencies when training with Yoda but Yoda didn't try to kill him for it. No matter how you try to justify it, there's no reason Luke couldn't have just talked to his nephew.
@willhiggins95636 жыл бұрын
kalzoa22 Luke thought that way to, that’s why he regretted the thought before Ben even woke up. And yes, Kylo’s point of view is show before Luke’s so the audience is meant to sympathize with him first. But we don’t know the events leading up that confrontation, was Kylo showing dark side leanings before hand, how vivid was Luke’s vision? And the Jedi believed in letting go of worldly attachments, so Ben being his nephew wouldn’t have made a difference.

How much better would the movie have been if instead of trying to kill his nephew at the first sign of danger, he kept giving him more chances to redeem himself? Like, "this can't be who he really is" kinda thing. However, despite Luke's best efforts, Ben still turns evil, destroys the temple, kills the other students, and then leaves. I think that would have shaken him to his core a lot more and would have potentially given him a chance to leave and reflect. Not "burn the last remnants of the Jedi" k, but "what did I do wrong?". Cue Rey showing up, someone who is also struggling with the dark side, although she doesn't know it yet. Luke is hesitant to train her at first, because he doesn't want to make another Kylo, but he ultimately decides to train her.

Hate to be this guy, but one of the many problems I had with Ep.8 was that Rian didn't add much or explain a lot of things from the Farce Awakens and made more questions in The Last Jedi to the point where I see Ep. 9 being a huge clusterfuck on trying to finishing up loose ends made by the TLJ such as the destroying the First Order, what are the Knights of Ren and what are their goals, what will happen to Kylo, and so on.

@jarkoer6 жыл бұрын
True that! Even Mark Hamill has said that Luke is supposed to be the optimistic one. His character in TLJ looked like he had completely gone off the deep end. I'm not saying that Luke's character arc in TLJ wasn't believable (in fact, it was), but it just seemed very different from the character that we had come to know. From the audience's perspective, that was understandably jarring. Like Obi-Wan isolating himself out in the desert, people were perhaps expecting that Luke had isolated himself to focus more on the spiritual aspects of the Force until the time was right for him to come back to save the galaxy. That, I think, was the expectation everybody had at the end of Force Awakens. Instead we had a bitter, disillusioned old man unexpectedly filled with self hate and depression. The most powerful and highly trained Jedi in the galaxy... getting beaten in a saber fight with some noob who picked up a light saber just days before, and had instantly become an expert duelist with tons of force abilities she didn't have or even knew existed a week before.
@UltimateSpinDash6 жыл бұрын
Let me preface this by saying I'm pretty much neutral on TLJ, and I will reserve judgement on the sequel trilogy until IX is actually out. Killing Ben was a brief, fleeting thought to Luke. Unfortunately, that was enough to push Ben over the edge. Luke essentially caused a forest fire by carelessly disposing of a cigarette. Another difference between Ben and Vader: Luke did not spend two decades creating an idealized version of Ben in his mind, but he did that for Anakin, especially after learning the Anakin was a Jedi. So when he learns that Vader is Anakin, Luke clings to the hope of redeeming his father, something both Obi-Wan and Yoda keep telling him is pointless. At the end of the day, Luke simply isn't infallible. But when people with power make mistakes, the consequences can be so much worse. Of course, you could argue that Luke should've known better, but when you have someone with Ben's force potential (we've seen the raw power he wields, and I don't think he's at his peak yet) getting closer to the dark side, it's easy to give in to fear. Even assuming Ben's potential is equal to Anakin's, Vader was held back by the injuries he sustained on Mustafar - Ben has the potential to surpass Vader and Palpatine.
