Interesting trivia for the car nerds: The white convertible that Aki uses to rescue Bond was a one-off custom Toyota 2000GT. It was an amazing limited-production car (only 351 made), but was only available as a hardtop coupe and Connery was too tall to fit. So Toyota modified two cars into convertibles for the movie in only two weeks. There was no soft top made and the tonneau cover hid the rough edges. Roger Craig said that he thinks they are the coolest of all the Bond cars.

Ran to see this movie as an 11-year-old Bond fanatic when it was released in 1967 - there was the usual hype in the press with a memorable Esquire Magazine layout whose cover was a trio of beautiful mourners crying over a casket - "Rejoice! James Bond is Dead!". After almost 3/4 of a century, two truly impressive scenes stand out in the mind - the rooftop fighting filmed from a helicopter and the exciting take-off of Little Nellie. After the accident with Johnny Jordan, the crew was totally disheartened and Peter Hunt suspended all the helicopter scenes. They took up filming a bit later in Torremolinos, Spain, where the mountain scenery was very similar to that of Japan.. Congrats on another fine, informative video!

Excellent video dude!!!! Well researched and informative!!! Pinewood Studios is a short drive from London central!!! 15-20 minutes!!! But the million dollar volcano 🌋 was so huge that you could see it from London!!!! A brilliant film 🎥 Re OHMSS……as a lad in New Zealand I saw the film in 1969….. It was an excellent film but my hero, Sean Connery, had disappeared!!! So the film was a little flat!!!! But over time the film has mature like fine wine 🍷!!!! I consider it to be one of the best films of the series!!!! Thunderball was the first 007 movie that I saw!!!! Connery wearing that orange wetsuit and walking out of the surf ……. Just hooked me!!!! I want to be that man!!!! Meet Connery in 1997 when he was in Wellington New Zealand checking out sir Peter Jackson…. Jackson wanted Connery to play Gandolf in the lord of the rings series….. Connery couldn’t understand the script…. Hence declined the role!!!! He missed out on an income of $450 million dollars!!!! Very good, but I wish you had spent more time on Little Nellie, built by my former neighbour Wing Commander Ken Wallis, an absolutely extraordinary flyer and engineer (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ken_Wallis) who deserves his own movie. He not only built Little Nellie but flew her himself during the helicopter dogfight. He said that he nearly froze because even at the relatively low altitudes, the air was very cold, Bond was supposed to be in shirtsleeves so Ken had to fly without any form of flight suit.

I always sensed that Connery would have been happy to stay as James Bond for the rest of the Fleming books up through Octopussy had they simply paid him the fair money he wanted as well as working out a schedule that would let him do the other films that Sean wanted to branch out into by doing a bond film every three years. Broccoli and saltzmen hurt the series by not keeping the main casting consistent when it came to the characters Felix lieter, blofeld and James Bond. though it is nice to see different actors playing them during that golden age of superior acting, the lack of uniformity hurt the series in my opinion. Connery, in an interview I researched had said paraphrasing…….“ look at those B movie spy films like the Mat Helm and In like Flint series. They are clearly B movies that are fit for being played at 2 am in the morning but those actors in them like Dean Martin and James Colburn are making $5 million or more for each of those films and I am in a top rated A movie series that is iconic and will stand the test of time and it’s all I can do to make five hundred thousand for You only live twice, let alone the one million that they rejected me” Connery had a case. Broccoli and ssltzmsn were to cheap and the eternity of fans will pay the price for it.

I was a kid when my mom took us to see this one, since she really liked Sean. My dad was appalled that us kids saw such debauchery. I liked it and eventually caught up with the previous films. It does have some classic, big-production scenes. My first Bond movie & I was hooked. Side note: It was my mom's turn to be appalled when she took us to see Blazing Saddles, which made me laugh so hard, me being just a kid.

My favourite Bond movie along with Moonraker. I was 12 when this was released and managed to achieve the goal of visiting Japan in 2024, twice in fact in May and October. I just had to visit the headquarters of the Osato chemical operations, the New Otani Hotel in Tokyo. There’s a story I heard that the Toyota 2000GT car used by Aki was never meant to be a soft top. Apparently they had to quickly modify couple from a coupe body as Sean Connery’s physical stature meant it was impossible to get acceptable shots inside the car.

Moonraker was the first Bond movie I saw in the theaters, but it was For Your Eyes Only that made me fall in love with Bond. I went back and rented the Connery movies, and I absolutely loved You Only Live Twice.

Ken Adams was a genius with the sets he built. The one he did for YOLT was epic, the most grandiose and best set he ever came up with)) Connery was kind of mailing in his performance. But, I do like Aki, Tiger. I always dread the scene where she is killed. Pleasance is the best Blofeld. Akiko Wakabayashi is a favorite Bond lady for me, very pretty. One of her grand nephews was a student of mine when I taught at university. We talked about her. As to OHMSS, it is a beautifully filmed movie. Lazenby is wooden. What makes the film excellent is Diana Rigg and Telly Savalas. Their performances were outstanding and carry the film. As to themes... a great run of theme songs starting with the instrumental version of FRWL (Matt Munro's vocal version at the end is too much like nightclub schmalzy music), Shirley Bassey's Goldfinger, Tom Jones' Thunderball, Nancy Sinatra's YOLT and the instrumental theme to OHMSS, followed by Shirley again with Diamonds Are Forever (which I really like) are all fantastic. Then what was the next one? Some guy who was in a band with 3 other lads... oh yeah, Sir Paul McCartney! lol!! Wings Live and Let Die is a stomper. Paul worked well with George Martin. There was a streak of 7 excellent theme songs. (Man With Golden Gun is a clunker). Fun trivia fact... during the recording of Goldfinger (theme song), Shirley was having a hard time holding that ending note. She could hit it, but not hold it. She realized that her bra was being too constrictive. So, she ripped it off in the studio and then proceeded to nail it, holding that long note in 1 take! )) (I wonder what the sound engineers thought....) lol!

I recall reading (many years ago) that Sean Connery inadvertently created a firestorm either while shooting or promoting this movie (I can't recall which). He was interviewed by a Japanese reporter about women, and his response was (or was taken as) disparaging towards Japanese women. It was a major scandal and forced Eon to do some serious damage control. Understanding this faux pas might give some additional context to making of this film.

I was born in 65 and still love everything about the decade so Sean was my favourite For he FRWL is my favourite YOLT I liked because of location. The Osato Chemical building was in fact a hotel built for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics so it was only 2 years old Also seeing Kobe docks as it was. I've changed my mind now: Connery was 'winding down" as 007, he was more focused on getting it done, upon his return (I'm referring to Diamonds Are Forever), he - in my view - was so distant, there's little or no concern, looked so out of shape, no attempt had been made to get fit. I'll elevate this to "mid level" 007 features as I have a long held interest in Japanese Culture and this movie made no attempt to shy away from it.

“You Only Live Twice” still stands as a grand adventure, and was a magnificent experience on the big screen! The principal reason was Freddie Young, one of the greatest of cinematographers. However, the downside of this film is . . . Sean Connery. Most critics and fans agreed that he was just going through the motions. While I understand the pressures he endured in Japan, it’s ironic that Connery, who expressed contempt for those he considered unprofessional, failed to adhere to his own standard. (And people called George Lazenby “wooden”?) For all his skill at large-scale filmmaking, Lewis Gilbert was less successful with actors. Connery did poorly during Aki’s death scene, and the Japanese characters, especially Tiger Tanaka, were not well-developed. Gilbert himself admitted that he opted for spectacle over character because after so many films, he couldn’t do much with the Bond character. He carried this shortsighted view into his later films - “The Spy Who Loved Me” is nothing more than a remake of “You Only Live Twice.” And don’t get me started on “Moonraker”! The plot construction was not smooth, although the film moves at a much better pace than “Thunderball.” The sloppiness shows in some of the process photography, the disappearance of Bond’s “Japanese” disguise, and the fact that the name Kissy Suzuki is unknown until the closing credits. But John Barry contributed a marvellous score, and Ken Adam’s production design was incredible. I’m happy to note that from here, we arrived at the best Bond film of all - and a welcome change in leading man.

John Barry and Ken Adam are the secret weapons of the Bond franchise. And Ken Adam really out-did himself with the Volcano lair. I still like this movie, but you can see the flaws. OHMSS was great! And then, of course, there's Diamonds Are Forever! 🤣

Alfie was a great movie ! The biggest problem was filming the books out of order which forced the strange turning Japanese. Which I still don’t understand since there were westerners in Japan. But it forced the producers to think of a reason for Bond to be there instead of just washing up on the beach . YOLT does have the great mass Ninja attack and I miss these kind of scenes. And one of my favorite Maurice Binder intros and Barry music.

I researched who the Japanese woman extras were in the film and the opening credit sequence and surprise!, many were not Japanese, which seems strange since there were plenty of Japanese women in Japan to hire. The sauna scene: only one of the Four women were Japanese, Yasuko Nagazumi, the rest were Mai Ling (Hong Kong) and she also played the airline stewardess in Goldfinger snooping on bond in the bathroom, Yee-Waa Yang (Hong Kong), and Jeanne Roland mixed race British and Burmese, the one bond picked. The opening credits: (Not all can be identified) The first woman we see up close briefly as the fan turns to highlight her upper face, primarily her eyes is Kiyomi,k kobiyashi, next women is once again, Mai Lin, with her hair in Japanese style staring forward and finally Sylvana Henriques, surprisingly an African American model who actually played the silhouetted Japanese women throughout and at the end of the credits in the silhouetted sauna scene. There are pictures of her and I can see how she could have that innocent and child like Japanese look when silhouetted. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find the Identity of the other women in the opening credit sequence, and perhaps at this point such info could be lost, not even found in the Bond archives, but it’s logical to conclude someone in Japan couid put on their social media page that My Mother (or Grandmother) told me that she was that she was one of the women in the opening credit sequence of You Only Live Twice”. maybe someone will eventually stumble onto that.

Laura chandler submitted her own song for this film called “You only live twice”, and it was in the musical styling of the previous songs of the first four films, especially like Goldfinger and Thunderball. I prefer that kind of song so I like chandler’s song better and it goes better with the opening credits. There are a couple of those submissions of the opening credits with Chandler’ song on KZbin and many have submitted the record audio. They went with the Nancy Sinatra song because she was a bigger name, more famous so more money, they figured. It also allowed for an easier recycling of the tune instrumentally through out the film. They initially offered the song to her father, but he wanted his daughter to have it. Frank would have song it great but he always wanted to help his daughter, Nancy But it would have been interesting to hear Frank Sinatra singing “you only live twice” at least one time. Also, I think they picked her sing because back then there was a stereotype in the USA that anything Asian, including Japanese, always had to be slow a love type sing with Asian themed instruments, as if that was the only way they could be rightfully and naturally represented. It was still that way when I was growing up in 1970’, and 80’s. So picking Nancy’s song is just what would have been expected. Too bad because the bond series back then was all about being unconventional and amazing and loaded with surprises and it would have surprised everyone if they had been the first to of broken that conventional pattern by picking Chandler’s song.

They ended up having to assemble edit the final version of the song, so it's basically a Frankenstein of all the different takes spliced together. All the same, IMHO the only theme to best this in the franchise is 'Live and Let Die.'

Connery was sooo concerned about typecasting, but the perceived damage was already done after Goldfinger. Every Bond videographer is overly polite about this, but Sean Connery was just not getting hired for other roles, however wondrous with Costner in The Untouchables. I think he should have embraced it and made it through the entire 20th century series. I dare say Daniel Craig was the sole improvement in Bond actors. Younger viewers would not have preferred Connery after the late 90s, although by that time Connery would have commanded a fierce salary. When you ask for more money AND claim to be unhappy, it doesn’t end well. Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, and Pierce Brosnan were OK, but just actors. Cubby on Connery: "A ballsy guy ... with a bit of verneer over that tough Scottish hide and you've got Fleming's Bond instead of all the mincing poofs we had applying for the job!" OMG! For the sauna scene, I always thought it odd that they had James Bond pick the least Japanese and Asian looking women. I thought it was due to subconscious racism, but I later learned that Broccoli and saltzmen and the bond crew were not racist people. The woman he picked is named Jeanne Roland. She was born in British Burma, with her father being British and white and her mother being Burmese. She currently resides in England and is 83 years old. And so it is logical to conclude that they chose her to be the one James picked so that she, being a fellow Brit, would get the greater 15 minutes of fame experience.

What does 'filmed live in Japan' mean? 'live' would mean broadcast in realtime. Which can only be done on electronic media. As far as I know, this film was shot on standard 35mm film. Maybe I misheard?

I think it meant that they avtually filmed it in Japan. In 1967, it would have been rare to actually go to Japan to film such a movie.

I love OHMSS and always have. I also love Diamonds. These are my favourite James Bond movies. Just watching Diamonds again now with, as usual, my best friend. We know, laugh at/with and celebrate all the silly lines. It is, for me, the most quotable movie ever written, a comic masterpiece. I can rattle them off (right idea, wrong pussy; hey Curly, I wanted Hi-test - you had your chance and you blew it; he was bitten by the bug; Tiffany my dear, that's a little more cheek you're showing, I got a brudder too, Mr Franks; a glowing tribute - heart-warming; ah but then that would be no surprise) and he basically can rattle off the entire script. My favourite scenes in this great favourite movie, the ride with the "brains trust" to the funeral home, Bambi and Thumper (what a house!), the gas station. No doubt you'll hate it just as much as you hated Casino Royale. Repent, my friend, repent.

This video presentation seemed to be more about providing clips from the movie, with a little bit of historical background on how they chose the various Bond characters. And here is another video presentation I took a chance on watching, in hopes I wouldn't hear the narrator use the word "iconic." But sure enough, apparently because of a limited vocabulary, "iconic" was sadly used-- again! There is an apparent laziness among the writers of narratives for video presentations posted on their KZbin channels. They all seem to refuse to enlighten their narratives with more imaginative language, which would be assisted by the use of a thesaurus.

“You Only Live Twice” still stands as a grand adventure, and was a magnificent experience on the big screen! The principal reason was Freddie Young, one of the greatest of cinematographers. However, the downside of this film is . . . Sean Connery. Most critics and fans agreed that he was just going through the motions. While I understand the pressures he endured in Japan, it’s ironic that Connery, who expressed contempt for those he considered unprofessional, failed to adhere to his own standard. (And people called George Lazenby “wooden”?) For all his skill at large-scale filmmaking, Lewis Gilbert was less successful with actors. Connery did poorly during Aki’s death scene, and the Japanese characters, especially Tiger Tanaka, were not well-developed. Gilbert himself admitted that he opted for spectacle over character because after so many films, there wasn’t much you could do with the Bond character. He carried this shortsighted view into his later films - “The Spy Who Loved Me” is nothing more than a remake of “You Only Live Twice.” And don’t get me started on “Moonraker”! The plot construction was not smooth, although the film moves at a much better pace than “Thunderball.” The sloppiness shows in some of the process photography, the disappearance of Bond’s “Japanese” disguise, and the fact that the name Kissy Suzuki is unknown until the closing credits. But John Barry contributed a marvellous score, and Ken Adam’s production design was incredible. I’m happy to note that from here, we arrived at the best Bond film of all - and a welcome change in leading man.
