I'm happy to watch you do shorter rides Gordon; it is, after all, the usual lot of most riders and I'd venture that we don't always watch for something new and breathtaking, sometimes it's for the reassurance of the familiar. You said something that really resonated with me on this one, and that's knowing that you've got to get through that first 10-15 minutes to get the 'cycling mindset'. Knowing that will come helps one get out when, perhaps, they're are warm and dry options available at home. I've never regretted getting out on my bike, even if it is just for an hour, it's wet and I get a flat. I can't explain it, but that's how it is!

Thanks, Rob. My late father used to say 'getting out of the door is the hardest part' and whilst there are some conditions that are dangerous, a lot of the time it's just a matter of facing up to less-than-ideal weather. Once we move into cycling mode and we're past any sense of guilt for leaving behind the schedules and deadlines, that's where the magic happens! I put together a set of 'Sub Two Hour Rides' in November & December that was well-received with lots of comments saying the ten rides had inspired people to be more creative in their own riding areas. That was great feedback for me. I've been over Holme Moss today (Friday AM) and had a super outing. Now I've got to flick back into 'work mode' .... haha

It's these 'everyday rides' that pave the way for those big days out - whatever a big day out is to that particular rider - and I really enjoy seeing these and the likes of the sub-twos, which I think show how much you can pack into and get out of a relatively short time on the bike. It's a refreshing counter to the seeming arms race of epic rides, 'worlds toughest/longest whatever ...' that social media seems to lean towards. Always a good watch and nice Eagles reference there (I think!) 🙂

That pub must've closed quite recently because I was surprised to see the 'For Sale / To Let' sign. I could remember it starts in B minor but I struggled to remember any of the lyrics, by which time it was nearly out of shot.

I'm glad you film the shorter rides, I still enjoy the video's. My cycling has dropped off a lot recently too, i used to cycle with my dad but he had a bad accident a few months ago. I still try getting out when I can which is better than nothing. I could do with coming across a spare millionaire so I don't have to work 😂.

Thanks, Claire. These shorter rides feel so precious when time and opportunities are short, and you're right - they're a lot better than nothing. When we can't manage an all-day club run with cafe-stops it's still nice to get that sense of movement. I hope your dad makes a speedy recovery and gets back out on the bike before too long.

my Dad used to say "you can soon get out of Barnsley" meaning that we were just on the edge of beautiful countryside, and the same goes for Bradford. My only metric now is annual seat time (I have a cumulative graph on a spreadsheet; not doing too well this year lol). p.s. I had a high school teacher called "Mr Burkinshaw" p.s.s. I enjoy the intellectual-edge of your videos

Cheers, Paul. I'd been to the town centre as a kid when my dad ran the Barnsley Six road race but I had no idea how lovely the surrounding countryside was until I entered a mid-80s walk/trail run event starting at Worsborough Res & taking in Dodworth, Silkstone, Cannon Hall, Hoylandswaine... A few years later I based so many cycle rides on that route. I think saddle-time is a better indicator than mileage because it allows for different types of terrain and both on & off roading.

Rides are shrinking out here too. Daytime temperatures are in the mid to high thirties in the shade confining rides to either early morning (unlikely as i have become averse to early rising since finishing with work.) or the hour or so between dusk and darkness. Normal service will be resumed in September. Still miss the Pennines.

Thanks, Ronald. You've got to be careful in those temperatures. I had a weekend in the Pyrenees during a heatwave when it was 36-37 C in Lourdes. Pilgrims were fainting walking to and from the shrine and I felt distinctly ill climbing the Tour giants in that heat. Take it steady for a few weeks.

This is why we must take care of our health while we are still young, in order to be here when older and have time free. But so many of us get destroyed by the time we get retired. That ain't fair, it's stupid. And our own faults. I'm 77 and cycling steadily as an adult since 1972. I could have done better, but every kid I grew up with back in Massachusetts is now gone. I am really lucky, I have a new Wabi bike coming next week. Use it or lose it girls.😅

When you passed that pub called California it reminded me that part of Eston / Normanby where I live is called that. Apparently it’s because there was a massive influx of ironstone workers which reflected thr gold rush in 1849. Look what you’ve started I’m looking up local history now 🤣🤣🤣

That's very interesting. I looked it up and I've just read an article in 'Teesside Live' about it. Place names are fascinating - as a kid I used to wonder about 'Little Germany' in Bradford, but then I learnt that it was quite literal because a lot of the 19th century cloth merchants and mill-owners came from Germany!
