I really like the attention to detail of showing the cutscene with the only time a Xenoblade character has ever said the name of an in-universe month across all three games while you were explaining Japan has proper month names but they're mostly not used

There is a concept that is Goroawase, which is the art of making text out of numbers, or vice versa. For example, if you look at many of the Sword and Shield challengers, they do have a number, and all numbers (except Leon iirc) have a pun associated. Bea is 193 -> いくさ -> Fight Nessa is 049 -> **お**よぐ -> To swim And Eevee Day is 11/21 because: - 1121 -> いいぶい (which is Eevee's name in Japanese). Goroawase! PS.: If you go to the page for Goroawase on the Wikipedia, you can see the Goroawase for the marathon, and it's pretty fitting. It's not unlike mnemonics. Or Namco being なむこ -> 765
@evanpereira355510 күн бұрын
An other sign that doing a marathon is a bad idea.

Another example is HAL for the kirby franchise, since they will typically sneak 86 into any important numbers in the lore (ha - ro if you shorten hachi and roku, which sounds close to the japanese pronunciation of HAL)
@Kyronex09 күн бұрын
A big example of this is Sho Minamimoto in The World Ends With You. In English, he constantly makes various math puns, but that's because in Japanese he speaks almost exclusively with goroawase mnemonics, which is why the other characters have such a hard time understanding him (they're not bad at math, he's actually just that weird)

@moonsilvershow10 күн бұрын
oki really small nitpick, but the pronunciation for any year ending with a four drops the "n" in "yon". so 2024 is "nisen'nijuuyonen". just to be like, specific lol. tangent, the same goes for hours
@moonsilvershow10 күн бұрын
also i could def be wrong here, but i thought the reason for the eleven pun was moreso a shortening of "ichi ichi", as you'll often see "ichi" shortened in front of a counter, like "ippon", meaning "one long thin thing", or "issatsu", meaning one of something shaped like a book. but im def seeing that through a language perspective and not an online perspective so yeah i was probably wrong lol
@moonsilvershow10 күн бұрын
yet another tangent, oshi no hi was probably the fourth, as the 04 can be read as "o" and "shi", as "shi" is the chinese-loaned word for four in japanese.
@moonsilvershow10 күн бұрын
okay sorry im a linguistics nerd and also a japanese speaker so imma go off on some of the other days: the twenty second being couple day is a pun on "fuufu", meaning couple (usually a married one, unmarried you usually just call a kappuru), and the native japanese word for two, being "fu", as seen in many of the counting words for two, like "futari" (two people), or "futatsu" (two of something you dont wanna use a different counter for).
@moonsilvershow10 күн бұрын
a good thing to keep in mind for the logic of these puns is that there are really two sets of numbers in japanese: the native Japanese words, and the words borrowed from chinese way back when. the native words go: hi, fu, mi, yon, itsu, mutsu, nana, ya, kokono, and tou. the chinese words are the more common ones you hear, especially when first starting out learning japanese: ichi, ni, san, shi, go, roku, shichi, hachi, kyuu, and juu
@moonsilvershow10 күн бұрын
imma be real idk where they got thigh day, its usually said as "momo" or "futomomo" and the only one i can glean is the "futo" coming from two. idk where the "momo" would come from tho. butt day probably gets done with a day with a four in it, for "shi" in "oshiri", unless they're using "ketsu" but i wouldnt know cos im not that chronically online. one that i do know of is "niku no hi", which comes from two and nine making "ni" and "ku" (kyuu is sometimes changed to ku, its a thing). this ones for just like, drawing characters thiccly cos niku means meat lol. my chronic online-ness is sporadic

Don't really understand why this had to be 8 minutes. Goroawase is just a common Japanese thing. Everyone does it and you see it everywhere. The word "yakuza" comes from the bad 893 hand in a certain card game. Namco series Idolmaster has 765 Productions. Konami games often have 573 in them somewhere. Zelda Ocarina of Time has the "twenty-three is number one!" Deku scrub, originally _"nii-san wa ichiban!"_ Vtuber agency Nijisanji uses the number 2434 a lot. Hatsune Miku has 39. Goroawase on TV Tropes has a big ol' list.
