George hit the nail on the head with the reason for everyones power (Dash is a ball of energy, Violet wants to disappear, Dad needs to be strong, mom is constantly stretched in every direction), powers are based on personality in this world. The popular theory for Jack Jacks power(s) after the 1st movie was released is that babies are full of potential, they haven't really developed a personality (aka "useless").

Dash running on water still gives me chills. This movie had some of the most incredible (pun intended) action set pieces I've seen in an American animation production. I think the second movie is also good, although it's nowhere near the level of the first.

Edna Mode is voiced by director Brad Bird. Originally he was just a scratch voice (a temporarily voice made by studio empoyees like animators, director or other staff members, until a real actor or actress have been auditioned) like he did for Bob and Syndrome, but when Lily Tomlin was auditioned for the part, she heard Brad Bird's scratch voice and said "What do you need me for? You already got her!".

Edna mode is an iconic character. After Brad Bird came up with the voice for Edna, they couldn't find anyone that could copy her accent, it's supposed to be French-Japanese, so Brad decided to do it himself and a movie icon was born

I thought 'Incredibles 2' was more than ninety percent as good as the first. But the first one was SO good on SO many levels, it's actually surprising that it came near to the first in quality. One thing people perhaps overlook about both films, is that in addition to being loads of fun, they're a rare example of films with Conservative values: They highlight the centrality and the elevated status of family life. And, not merely 'found' family, but the good, old-fashioned, classic 'nuclear' family. Helmed by maybe the most talented creator in Hollywood, with a big-studio budget behind it. (Would Disney greenlight the identical film today? Doubtful.) Another great reason to see 'Incredibles 2' is the accompanying short: 'Auntie Edna'. (What happens when baby Jack Jack is dropped off, with Edna as baby sitter? Edna is just aching for what is missing in her life - a challenge! But, is even Edna up for THIS challenge?) :)

This is one of the best superhero movies ever! Edna is my favorite character in Incredibles! She's voiced by Brad Bird, the director of Incredibles. Also, because Bird was such a PITA to the artists that worked on Incredibles, Syndrome' appearance is based on Bird. And minor spoiler, there's more Jack-Jack in Incredibles 2! Also there's a short with Auntie Edna!

I guess the reason JackJack has all those powers is because, as you said, every family member abilities are based on what they are in their secret identities, like the daughter being invisible because she is invisible at school and mom is elastic because she is all over the place, the baby has all the powers because he is a baby with all the potential to be any superhere.

I love that this movies is a kids' movie, but is still loaded with big, grown-up thoughts. The fears that hit hardest aren't "being chased by bad guys" but fear for their marriage, fear of irrelevancy, fear of losing friends, family, children, fear of not being good enough, etc. The victories that are sweetest are in the same vein. Kids watching can feel the action, punch the bad guys stuff, but adults with adult anxieties see a whole different movie. Iron Giant (also a Brad Bird film) is great for similar reasons.

Fantastic Four is often referred to as the "first family" as they were the first ever "team" of superheroes that Marvel published. I assume that's why they were the template for The Incredibles.... its a really good proxy for sure, though its not dead on. Elastigirl is a dead ringer for Mr. Fantastic, and so is Violet for Sue Storm. Heck even Jack-Jack is a solid match for Franklin Richards, but Mr. Incredible really only has the good sides of the Thing's powers... doesn't have to deal with being a rock monster. Dash for Johnny Storm is the biggest stretch... superspeed and fire powers don't really gel at all.

The old guys who says "You see that? That's old school!" "Yup! No school's like the old school." are caricatures of two of Disney's NIne Old Men (the legendary animators of Walt Disney Animation) Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston, they're even voiced by them. They have been in touch with Brad Bird since he was a kid (he wo an animation contest at the age of 12 and got to meet the Disney animators including another Nine Old Man Milt Kahl, who became sort a mentor to him, nice but "tough", meaning he would would not shy from telling him what his short-comings in animating was, giving him constructive critism) and he'd show storyreels while working on both this movie and Iron Giant, giving him advice on how to improve the story. Sadly, Frank Thomas passed away a couple of months before the release of the film, so he didn't get to see the finished film in life. They also cameod in The Iton Giant as train eningeers.
