The fact that you noted that Buddy was doing "incredible" things but was so filled with hate that he never did anything good with it was a point i never realized before. He already was capable of becoming a super hero... but he never realized it for himself.

I feel like in a different life buddy directed all that hate towards trying to be a better hero than bob was the legitimate way. I'd imagine it could be a cool set up for a what if movie where bob realizes buddy's potential but is constantly pushed away by buddy the same way he pushed him away.

@@luf4rall Buddy was kid who didn't understand that life (in the Incredibles universe, like in real life) is too flicking dangerous for an adult to bring kids into violent real-world situations. The encounter with Bomb Voyage showed that graphically, but Buddy was too emotionally immature to understand. Bob being a little nicer wouldn't have changed that reality.

Bob's depression is due to repression, not ordinary circumstances beyond his control. It's like someone with a 200 IQ being forced to act like they had a 100 IQ. So many limits compared to what they can do which is different than if he'd had brain trauma and now had the same change but the limit was now about what they were unable to do. It's so much easier to be accepting in the latter than the former, though depression is a likely visitor to both. It's like what Peter Parker told Tony Stark: "When you can do the things that I can, but you don't, and then the bad things happen, they happen because of you." That's a hard thing to put a big smile on.

Funny story: when I was in college taking ASL, we had an assignment where you had to do a PowerPoint presentation on celebrities that you admired. I decided to do mine on Bird, and so I spent the whole time, silently signing my topics on his career and awards, and since he did very few live action media, I saved that to be a slide all on it's own. And when I signed about him directing ghost protocol, just for fun, I blinked a couple of times and made a "wait what" face, looking up at the screen just to check if I said that right and then back and shrugged. That was really fun. XD

Take a second and think about the fact that Jack Jack has powers when he's roughly a year old. Which means supers can use their powers even when they're that young, possibly even younger since the family were convinced Jack Jack had no powers. Now imagine Mr. and Mrs. Parr having to go through the stress of having to raise their first ever baby.... and also that baby can turn invisible. You're welcome.

Fun fact: Edna Mode was supposed to get her own voice actor. Until they found one Brad Bird himself spoke her lines as a stand-in. The recording crew was so happy with this work that they finally convinced Brad Bird to drop his search and keep on voicing her. So in essence the crew had to convince the director and producer in one person to do such an awesome impression. Because in my book, Edna is a hidden gem of the movie, or in fact, the two movie mini-series. Should there ever be an animated series, I do hope they still get Brad Bird as the voice actor for her. For me the perfect representation of an intro to powers was when Dash ran from the jungle, saw the water, closed his eyes for what seemed an immediate splash down. Then that astonished little gleeful laugh when he noticed that he is so fast he can run on water. That was AWESOME!

The tape showed that Dash was running super fast. There's a tiny blur that happens in the back of the room. I'm surprised that you didn't see it. Holly Hunter (Helen) took some lessons on piloting, so the lingo she used was accurate; it wasn't written in the script, but they were impressed, so they kept it, and animated it. Those two old men on the bench -- "That's old school." -- were two of the original animators who had worked for Walt Disney, WAY back in the day. Shortly after the film was released, one of them had passed away.

I like how each of their powers is a reflection of who they are in the family: Bob the dad is the strong protector, Helen the mom needs to stretch and assume multiple roles for everyone’s needs, Violet is the typical shy teen- turns invisible and creates force fields to keep people out. Dash the hyper little kid has super speed, and Jack-Jack the baby is pure potential who can become anything

They're basically the Fantastic Four. Bob is the Thing/Ben Grimm, Helen is Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Violet is Sue Richards/Invisible Woman and Dash is Johnny Storm/Human Torch. They just swapped fire powers for superspeed because keeping the elemental theme entirely would be a potential copyright suit.

@@maykonbrasileiro761 Three of the four characters are direct analogues of the Fantastic Four. Both sets of characters are a family. The similarities are obvious. One way to do that would be to break the elemental theme of the FF.

@@maykonbrasileiro761 Aaaand...you are wrong. Each group has 4 members. Bob has superstrength and durability. As does the Thing. Both are the tank of the group. Helen and Reed have elasticity powers. Violet and Sue have invisibility/force fields. Only Dash/Johnny have obviously dissimilar powers. And even then, both are impulsive, i.e. hotheads. So they have somewhat similar personalities. Jack-Jack is similar to Franklin. He's there in the background but, being a small child, isn't normally part of the group. Yes, there are slight differences between Sue/Violet or Helen/Reed. So what? They're different takes on the same basic concept. And that's the point. They are the same basic concept. Everything else is just window dressing.

Did you know their names have multiple meanings? Mr Incredible - The Man of the house, and incredible super strength. Elastigirl - Susan is always there when the kids needs her as a mom. Violet - She’s has ultraviolet rays that are purple (violet) and allow for force fields and to turn herself invisible (which is apart of her stage of life as a teenager). Dash - He’s a speedster and at the point of his life where your an energetic kid. Jack Jack - He’s a baby (they do things when you least expect) and Jack of all trades (goes along with being a baby) for superpowers. Love this movie. It still absolutely holds up 18 years later. I love the whole 60's aesthetic, and I love how the entire thing just feels like a slick mash-up of James Bond and Marvel's Fantastic Four. And the music in this movie is just....phenomenal. ;) Also there is kind of a shocking amount of death in this Pixar kids' movie. :P Exploding henchman, people being violently sucked into jet engines, and random bystanders getting crushed. Not that I'm complaining, it's just kind of surprising! :P Also, you should watch the next one. It's definitely not as good as the first one, but that is a very high bar to clear, and it's still quite good. Seeing the lesson of depression is something that is missed by so many people as it's just so relatable as personal depression is so common that it's become background noise. As for using your grandpas' tummy as a drum, my niece, when she was really little, used to do that to me. Now, she's 34 and her kid does that to me. Funny how her daughter can only go to sleep on my chest when they're over... Just like her mother used to do. Another great reaction, love The Incredibles! As an animator, I can tell you that there’s a difference between cartoon characters and animated characters. Cartoon characters are like Tom & Jerry: they don’t die and their sole purpose is to make you laugh. Animated characters are treated more like real, well rounded people who we care more for if they get hurt, and they have the ability to make us cry. For these type of movies, you can refer to them as animated movies, animated characters or animations.

The trailer actually borrowed music from Bond. On Her Majesty's Secret Service in particular. I think they really wanted long time Bond composer John Barry to do the music, but he wasn't coming out of retirement. Michael Giaccino did an excellent homage, though. I also think some of the score is reminiscent of Henry Mancini, creator of, among other things, the Pink Panther theme.

As time goes by, terminology also changes. These films are not cartoons per se, but rather animated features (or animations). It's like when my female friends refer to my 'action figures' as "toys". It sends a shiver down my spine. 😂 I'm glad you enjoyed the Incredibles. Jack-Jack plays a longer part in the sequel and it's just as qood as this feature.

My funny little ""Incredibles" story..I went to DragonCon one year and there was a family dressed as "The Incredibles". They were all walking in the DragonCon parade outside of the hotel. All of a sudden, the young boy took off like a bullet, and he was so fast, someone a quarter block down had to catch him for the parents. Its was life imitating art!

Another animated movie you should look into is the How To Train Your Dragon trilogy, it seems purely fantasy but there's a lot that goes into them and the characters grow throughout the movies both literally and mentally. I think you would find the trilogy really interesting both on an entertainment level and deeper level.

It's really fun how each character's powers reflect their character archetype. Dad has to be strong for his family, Mom has to be flexible and adaptive, emo teen daughter wants to disappear and/or put up a wall around herself, little brother is just full of energy and wants to go go go, and the baby is unmoulded clay just waiting to figure out what it's going to be.

The message self-destucting is paying homage to the Mission:Impossible tv show of the 1960s. Peter Graves's character would get his instructions via cassette tapes, which would always self-destruct a few seconds after he finished listening to them. They didn't explode, but it's hard to explain exactly how they self-destuctied.

Adding to Bob's depression is the fact that while he's still doing his best to help people in his normal-job capacity, doing so gets him in trouble with his boss. It would probably help if he recognized the good he's doing but, as you said, he's so fixated on what he can't do that he's losing sight of what he can - and has - done.

The part where Bob figures out that and remembers The Omnidroid’s weakness is itself shows how smart Bob really is. He notices the small details for example Bomb Voyage’s bomb in the building, the bomb planted on Buddy’s cape and the mugger he saw at his job. Something a genius like Syndrome overlooked and it was even his weapon he designed himself that he didn’t bother to test its weakness (aside from using superheroes) instead of its strengths

@@nicktroisi6347Both Bob and Helen are professionals. Helen, for example, specifically looks for energy intake levels, since she knows it would take a lot to keep Bob under control. She is trained in piloting a plane. The kids are not on that level yet - they have powers, but that's it. It's like a kid who is good at gymnastics and dreams of being a firefighter - but there is A LOT more to it.

D, if not mistaken, l saw this film first in an aeroplane somewhere between London and Johannesburg. I was in the former for a wedding of two friends l had studied with in the 90s. think of it also in this way. A firefighter who as a kid spent his life studying and training and memorizing things for his dream job, gets it and spends a few years saving lives, and putting out fires. Then one day, saves a person but without proper protective gear (gloves, masks and such) and the person he saved had some deadly disease. This forces him to no longer work as a firefighter due to being contagious to others. He is in his prime and now is dying and can’t spend that time saving folks. So, how else would he feel. Mr. Incredible was well into his prime, and then the government now forced him to go into hiding. He had a physical gift and a strong desire to save others but would be declared a criminal instead. He would feel like he was wasting his life and feel insignificant not just to himself but to his own family.
