It’s interesting how one of Edna’s most iconic lines is “I never look back darling, it distracts from the now” and yet she remembers the exact date of death for superheroes her suit designs killed. What’s more, these tragic histories actively informed her decisions for designing new superhero costumes. I guess the real message of Edna was to take from the past what helps the future, but nothing more.

What's funny about this is that the No Capes rule was actually a result of technical limitations at the time. See having things being all flooly like capes or long hair was a MASSIVE pain in the ass to animated. That's why Violet has so little screen time in the first film her long hair part of her character but it meant that her screen time had to be cut to avoid animating her because of her long hair. This is also why she has so much more time in the second film because CGI has some a long way since then and it was a lot easier to animate her hair properly. However, instead of just having it where all the heroes we saw had no capes even though it's an iconic part of the Superhero Genre, Brad Bird decided to play into this idea and came up with the joke that capes got heroes killed for stupid reasons that could actually happen and used that as a Brick Joke for Syndrome's death later in the film when his cape is got in the jet turbine. Of course this meant they had to get around Syndrome's cape which is why we get so many up close shots of him and why he doesn't appear properly until the half way point of the film. Notice that in opening of the film Buddy has only a minute or two of screen time. It's because his cape was something the animators had to work around. Just a fun bit of trivia.
@TheKoriKasai Жыл бұрын
This is absolutely fascinating, thank you for sharing. I had no idea about any of this. I appreciate when people who have to do limitations in something like a game or movie add a canonical reason to why so.

The part about Violet being hard to animate might be why she has the power of invisibility. It’s easier to include a hard-to-animate character in on the fun when she doesn’t need to be animated half the time.

“I never look back darling, it distracts from the now” Although she’s talking about fashion, that pretty much sums up the main theme of the movie. Mr. Incredible was so fixated on his past, trying to relive the glory days, that he was missing out on the joys to be had with his family in the moment. Him wanting to patch his old suit, or design something that felt classic totally exemplifies that. In a way, seems like him accepting the new suit, the one that his whole family now wears, shows his growth and appreciation for being their husband and father, while still acknowledging what makes them special. On the other hand, Syndrome was also fixated on the past, unable to move on from the obsessions and betrayal he felt as a kid. And in the end, it was the cape, a symbol of that past, that ultimately led to his demise.

It makes sense Edna feels strongly about the capes. She designed those outfits, so maybe there's a little guilt in those heroes' fates. What's undeniable is that she learned a lot since then: sure, you need to look dapper and flashy, but being able to do your job without your freaking outfit getting in the way is the most important part of your suit. The fact that she can also make them frictionless, able to become invisible, practically indestructible, fresh to wear despite being made of what looks like very tight spandex, AND can be washed in a washing machine... That's just the icing on the cake.

Pity that nobody ever thought to try and have capes that worked like those clip-on ties, for certain emergencies like that.
@TheHammerGuy94 Жыл бұрын
For most superheroes, capes are just a way to make the wearer look large and intimidating. The way bob is thinking of capes is literally form and no function. Meanwhile as a super suit designer, she thinks of form AND function. Function usually follows form. And other than the flashy appeal, it just adds a weak point for movement and combat.
@jeffreymodesitt33454 ай бұрын
I think the latter point is used to explain Superman’s cape in the comics, it’s made from some super durable Kryptonian fabric so it can be used to shield people in an emergency situation, sometimes it’s just normal cloth though so it’s one of those things that fluctuates based on the writer

This was a good movie. It really helped sell the whole no capes thing at the end when syndrome died. I still remember fans anticipating the Incredibles sequel thinking he would come back. I’m like bruh what as a bone fragment? I mean I’d like to see syndrome back as much as everyone else but how do you come back from being pulped? Maybe it’s a decoy or body double apart of the storyline who knows but then that just ruins the original ending. Then again they do that with lots of movies nowadays
@noneofyourbuisness1679 Жыл бұрын
To be fair, superhero comics are rife with people coming back from the dead, to the point where it's pretty much a joke and the death of any major character has little impact on the fanbase. That said, The Incredibles seems to take place in a more 'logical' world, where super powers still exist, but there are less sci-fy or fantastical forces at play (if any). Makes sense that Syndrome wouldn't come back if they weren't going to implement any of that.

@@noneofyourbuisness1679 but what’s the theory on how he would come back? I don’t know about any jet engine deaths in comics that characters come back from
@noneofyourbuisness1679 Жыл бұрын
@@youtubedeletesmychannels2329No idea. I'm not saying your wrong, just pointing out that the theory does have some support, albeit pretty weakly. As for jet engine deaths specifically, I can't name any. I believe there have been several points where a character has had to form a new body for their soul to inhabit or take over the body of someone else. If I remember correctly, Animal Man (DC) was killed and came back in the form of a Triceratops to return to his family, where his daughter - who had powers similar to him, due to her being a vessel of the Red or something - formed a new body identical to his old one. I feel that wouldn't have been necessary if his original body wasn't in some kind of irreparable state.
