One amazing thing about music is that it has the potential to reach the soul. Though music and instruments may change shapes across cultures, its power remains consistent. Ms. Rao-de Haas has combined an instrument of Italian origin, the Cello, and given it an Indian twist. She plays and speaks about music in this heart-warming talk.
Saskia Rao-de Haas is a virtuoso cellist and composer from the Netherlands who is based in India. She was trained as a Western cellist from a young age onwards, but changed direction when she came in touch with Indian music in 1993. Now, she is known as a master performer in Indian classical music and creator of a new instrument: the Indian cello. She studied cello at the Conservatory of Rotterdam specializing in Indian classical music under Koustav Ray and Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia, while finishing her masters in Ethnomusicology from the University of Amsterdam. As a composer, she is eminent at bridging the Western and Indian classical music traditions. She is the first female non-Indian artist to have performed at the prestigious Doverlane Music conference in Kolkata. She has toured extensively through North America, Europe and Asia, performing at the world’s leading concert halls and festivals like Kennedy Center, the cello biennale in Amsterdam, the new directions cello festival in the US etc. Flute Maestro Hariprasad Chaurasia, speaks of his disciple Saskia as “someone who has been taught by God.” Her music is known to heal the soul and move her audience every single time.
