I work at Indian and nearly every FTR we see is a dedicated commuter! Maybe its the crazy South Dakotans, it's in our blood being the home of Sturgis Bike Rally, but the FTR is nearly the most smile ensuring bike you can ride, especially when you're sick of mundane trips to work. Might as well be smiling on your way! Also, the FTR1200 races in the Moto America "Super Hooligans" race, against the Dukes, Hypermotards and many high end hyper-naked machines. The FTR is either in the top 3, or takes 1st, 2nd AND 3rd. Incredibly potent machine when race prepped!

I've heard that refueling this bike is a bit of a PITA in that it takes too long to fill it up. Something having to do with the angle of the filler neck to the tank.

How do you think the FINISH of the carbon components will be holding-up? (I think that it LOOKS great, and unique, in the footage in this video, but I'm wondering if it would begin to fade, or to "ghost," like the pigment can end-up clouding, when you bend a colored sheet of Styrene Plastic.) Just curious, to hear your thoughts, on this finish-durability question.)

Great Job. Probably the best, most accurate, and honest review of the FTR I've seen. Coming from a long term FTR Carbon R owner, all of your points, positive and negative, are spot on. Couple of those point I will touch on though. The jerkiness of the throttle down low and 100% correctable with a Lloydz tune. The bike is completely different and even more of an animal after the tune. So much smoother too. The other would be the Ohlins comfort. I thought the same thing about the harshness as you did at first. I then spent half a day starting with the recommended Indian settings and then tailoring them to my weight. After probably 8-10 test rides and minor tweaking it's much more compliant and handles amazingly. It took a lot of dialing in though. Again awesome review man!!!

It's such a fun bike. I test rode one at bike week this year and decided to buy one about halfway thru the ride lol. 6 months later, it still puts a huge grin on my face every time I twist the throttle. That point in this video where spite rips it and just starts laughing - that's every time I ride it. It's just a blast.

I was deciding between the XSR 900 and the FTR when I bought my FTR and I don't think you can really go wrong with either. The XSR is not quite as quick, but it's lighter and cheaper

Having a '19, the changing of ride modes are never and issue, you also didnt highlight that its a touchscreen so its easier to change that way even with gloves. Overall an awesome review! The gas tank is by far the biggest issue in my opinion... did a 2500km tour of gas stations across western canada haha

This bike was one of the last two on my shortlist for my latest purchase. The other was a Kawa z900 RS. I chose the Kawa precisely because of what you mentioned - bigger tank with longer range, better for commuting, and more all-rounder than the FTR. Fuel mileage was the main deciding factor, since I actually do commute to work - 60 miles each way. So to answer the question, in my mind the main competitor was the Kawa z900 RS.

Same for me but I bought the FTR (second hand).. yes, the Kawa has better mpg but the FTR is way more fun. 33% usage for commuting and the rest is twisty rides in our 'polders'.. (in the Netherlands).

2022 FTR1200S White Smoke, $16000 0td. Daily commuter, I love, love mine!. I've always had real sportbikes, CBRs, ZXs, Gixers, both 600 and 1000s. I ride track and commute. This is the perfect commuter if you're coming from a pure sportbike world. Very comfortable riding position at 6'1". In my opinion very easy to use menu if you use touchscreen mode, the buttons are ridiculous! EXCEPT the cruise control button I LOVE IT!! Set it and off to work I go. The rush of power and exceptional handling are absolutely addicting. I ride So Cal mountains and can tell you it's fully capable of keeping up with the sportbike riders if you are. I'm 100% pleased with my purchase. Well done professional presentation even if agree to disagree.

Very good test and a very close description of what this bike is. But in my personal opinion I think he's coming at it from a street sport bike approach. Now for what it's worth. I'm coming at it from a dirt tracker Motocrosser approach. I've had and still have sport bikes. But my hart is mostly in the dirt. So that being said. I bought a 2023 FTR1200 Carbon R. Holy crap what a fun bike. I would choose this over the MT09 and did. It doesn't really make any mistakes. It does everything extremely well. I have so much fun everytime I ride this motorcycle it's crazy. He's right maybe about practicality. It's not practical at all. This bike was ment to one thing only and it does it everytime you ride it. Put a huge smile on your face while you giggle like a school girl. Now I have multiple motorcycles. I've been collecting since I was 8 and I'm 62 now. So I've had many years to build my inventory. So he's right in saying it's not a practical bike. But in my opinion the MT09 is not a better bike. And I like the MT09 as well. But I have more fun on the Indian FTR1200 Carbon R. To be fair I also have a 2021 Kawasaki Z900rs. That checks all the boxes the MT does but is much better in down town big cities like in my case San Jose and San Francisco. It works much better than the MT09 and the FTR. But for just screwing off and being stupid this is definitely the bike. There is one other bike that fits in this category. And that's the Ducati Hypermotard. I haven't ridden the 2023 or 24. But I was one of the first guys from a dealer that road one. And that 07 Hypermotard was awesome. The Indian is faster but that's not why you buy one of these bikes. Infact I will in the future buy a 07 or 98 Hypermotard S in Red. Again I collect. So in closing if you want a bike with tuns of caricature and stupid fun to ride. This is it. As far as the hurky jurky goes. Almost all street legal motorcycles have this problem. It can be tuned out with a flash to the ecu or a power commander. I could go on how much fun I'm having owning this motorcycle but I think between the 2 of us you get it. I hilly recommend this motorcycle for the fun factor. Good luck 👍

@@Sinister_fartbox I’m your typical fz09 hooligan type. I typically gravitate towards playful sporty bikes. I tried a friend’s FTR though and I LOVED it. It was every bit as quick but felt less frantic and twitchy. The weight and wheelbase make it feel more composed while the slower spinning engine give v8 muscle car vibes. Where the fz09 is really only enjoyable when romping on it, the FTR was nice even when you were just casually cruising around. It’s a much better machine than the spec sheet might imply. Worth taking for a test ride at least.

I bought one when they first came out after I demo one 2019 and just love it ,I also have 13 bikes of all makes and sizes but I can’t stop riding this, I rode it to Arizona from Maryland 2 years ago had to stop so many times for gas but not complaining because the seat sucks and my ass was killing me but I did buy an air hawk bag and that helped a lot and I’m 66 years old so if people say you can’t do this or that this will do it all

Nice review of the FTR1200. Your review reflects most of what I've experienced as an FTR1200 rider (I've owned mine [a leftover 2019 Base Model] since March 2020). Does it have its faults - yes, but it's a fun motorcycle to ride. It pulls like freight train - especially above 4000 rpm, and is IMO a great naked American sporty motorcycle. It's limited to "only 130 mph plus" - so what? short of going to a racetrack, it's plenty fast. I've been on the wrong side of 110 a few times (I don't make a habit of doing so - don't want to list my license, and despite wearing protective riding gear, a get off at the speed, would seriously hurt me). Oh yeah, you can commute on it. I do it on mine. During the warm weather months, it becomes my main wheels, for a daily 50 mile round trip commute to work. Like you said, the suspension can get kind of choppy, and the gas range is mediocre (I typically fuel up every 2 days when I commute on the FTR1200, due to the dinky underseat gas tank), but it's stable at 80 plus mph on the Interstate, during the 25 mile commute in the morning to work, and is fun to ride on the winding backroads (I hate jousting with afternoon rush hour traffic on the freeway) I take home from work. It handles well, and it's a blast grabbing a handfull of throttle exiting a turn. Could the FTR be better? Yes, but I've certainly ridden much worse. Even its weight, while considered kind of heavy nowadays, would have been considered pretty light in the early 80s - GS1100s and GPZ1100s, and Laverda Jotas had heavier dry weights, than the FTR1200's wet weight.

This was on the top of my list along with the XSR900 and the z900rs. Its going to be my 45th gift to myself but man that price, despite looking like sex on wheels is a full RC390 more expensive. I have until April to decide and I stll haven't been on a Z yet but $16,000 on the black with the upgrade suspension is kinda nuts. This was super helpful though.

For what it’s worth, I love my Z900rs for riding the twisties in San Diego. And for me, it corrects all the negatives that Spite addresses: lower price, better comfort/ suspension, 200+ miles for full tank, lighter and easier to ride with upside down forks and great engine breaking out of slipper clutch, and silky smooth 4 cylinder engine! I still love riding it after 22,000 miles 🏍😎

I have a '20 XSR and really loved the looks of the Indian(and the Kawie) but the cost difference and the unknown at the time reliability of the Indian made me go with the XSR. Bang for the buck nothing can touch it. Plus it's almost 100lbs lighter.

Once again, this is a very good review. I appreciated you answering the questions posed to you by the members. Especially the one about the back strain and the herky jerky throttle. I have to admit that this bike appeals to me because I ride twisty roads and no commuter travel. It also has a style that appeals to me. The downside to this brand is that the nearest dealer is 50 miles away from me ( I live in Harley land ( rural Wisconsin)).

I recommend you check out the Z900rs. I love mine in San Diego twisties, and it corrects all the negatives Spite addresses. Maybe there’s a Kawasaki dealership near you?

@@scottashdown3686 Coming from a Yamaha XJR 1300 I rode both the FTR and Kawa Z900RS. I love the looks of both bikes, but found the FTR more fun to ride. As good as my XJR even. I found the Z900RS a bit too loose and not 'torqie' enough. But it's a good bike overall.

I have a friend who's been riding some serious bikes for years, like an old Ducati and a screaming MV Agusta Brutale, and, while I "get" that it's a person's own business whether they want to spring-for a bike that'll exceed 170 mph, or-so, from a realistic point of view, doesn't it make a lot-more "USABLE" sense to have a bike that is QUICK, down-at the speeds that you could more-responsibly be using, on the street? Look at the FUN that Spite is registering, when he opens-up and zooms from 50-to-70, "in NO time," while the dashboard numerals were so large that we could all SEE the numbers mount! Just saying that you have a motorcycle has a top-end that is close to Escape Velocity makes a lot less sense than the usable FUN you could have, on bike that's more like THIS one.

100% agree. Most true sport bikes have a power range that just isn't fun or even usable on public streets. It isn't fun to take a bike that's designed to spin at 10k+ RPMs to hit it's powerband and cruise around town on it. There's a reason a lot of people like HDs - because even though they're generally "slow", the instant torque and low RPM powerbands are pleasurable if you don't care to speed and race. A lot of comment warriors on the internet (and youtube especially) live to compare spec sheets, but specs don't always outline a real-world experience. Something like an FTR or a Sportster S is kind of a nice mix of both worlds. More than enough grunt to be livable daily, but also has some top-end as well, more than enough power to go from 0-reckless driving in a matter of seconds and keep up with near anyone as long as they aren't going full stupid. Me? I like having a little juice, but I have no desire to get into, let alone well into, the triple digits pretty much ever.

I have a ‘19 FTR 1200S with the 18/19” wheels, as god intended. Anyway, I love the bike. I’m not a super sporty rider, but it handles great for my purposes and is so damn fun and quick as Spite says here. Plus … plus … it is absolutely beautiful. I think it, in the right trim, is one of the most perfect motorcycles ever designed for curbside beauty. Oh, and yes, the suspension is tough, even without the Ohlins version. I keep meaning to experiment with the clickers, but I never get around to it. When I get near it I just want to RIDE. Mine does not have the rear cylinder deactivation, so yes it will cook your inner thighs, esp the right one. I just try to think of it as a seat heater when the weather turns cool ;-) As to what is its closest competition. Nothing current, but the Moto Guzzi Griso comes to mind as a possible competitor at least WRT style and intent, IMO.

Cracking review and that new camera is sharp spite! I asked about direct competition for this bike because it's a question I can't answer either 🤷‍♂️. I love the styling and that beeefy frame but some of the issues you point out definitely matter to me so this was invaluable to hear. I'm test riding this and a Diavel next week so that should be an interesting comparison.

To compare, I highly recommend the cheaper, lighter, easier to ride and more comfortable Z900rs which has similar hp and torque specs on a super smooth 4 cylinder. Also upside down forks and great engine breaking from slipper clutch. I get 200+ miles on full tank. And it looks and sounds gorgeous, stock! The other bike I thought of was the Triumph Speed Twin. It also has similar specs coming out of a sweet, high torque parallel twin! Whatever bike you choose, make sure it fits YOU ergonomically like a comfortable shoe. Enjoy and good luck!

Got to test ride a 2022 FTR1200 at bikes blues and BBQ in NWA this weekend. Was actually really nice. I’m coming off of a 2021 z900 and this bike was easily as fast if not a little faster stoplight to stoplight as my bike, and it handles way better than I expected! Very cool torquey bike with huge style points and a great sound 👍

I got the joy of riding a '19 FTR at a local dealer used bike demo day, and it was incredible. All them torques felt amazing on the butt dyno, not what I was expecting from a "fuddy duddy" Indian V-Twin. Handling seemed great on the short course the dealer had laid out for us. IMHO your clarification of Fast vs Quick is spot on.

@@paulf9653 I have an FTR 2019 but also tested a 2022.. I found the feel and handling of the 2019 much more pleasant for myself as I'm over 6ft. I like the sitting upright on my FTR. And what Spite says about the 2019 being harder to steer into a corner, I disagree.. but I'm used to a Japanese muscle bike (XJR1300) that''s only 10kg heavier than the FTR.

@@mauriesl I just like the handling better on the 22 with the 17” wheels. I didn’t really notice any seating difference on the RR that I rode, just the seat height was definitely taller. I did add a set of Kopp risers to mine that are up and back 1” that made it better for me. I’m 6’1”.

@@paulf9653 The first owner also put a protaper rally handlebar on mine, that makes me sit even more upright.. the way Ilike it. And for the handling.. we all have our preferences and I'm not a very fast rider. I like easy cruising through corners so the handling of the 2019 FTR suits my style of riding. And maybe my being used to the XJR, also a heavy bike, cloured my experience of both bikes. So many bikes, so many experiences and preferences.. :-]

If you want torque and quick, go MT-10. The indian is nice but I imagine parts and service are expensive, and the MT-10 will kill it on all fronts. Cracking video, greetings from England Mr Spite.

Most of those carbon fiber parts You mention in intro are not even included: You need to buy the radiator covers, v-covers, heat shield and rear cowl separate, At a significant cost. Just saying.

Hey spite, on the fuel range, it could be an adaptive fuel range meaning it pays attention to how you ride and changes the fuel range estimation to suit. Hence why it can go up and down.

Pretty sure it is adaptive, but the total range is right around 100 miles with "normal" riding, which is impossible to do on and FTR 😂

I get about a 110-120 miles with very spirited riding, but at least 140 miles with regular riding in standard mode. I try to fill it up with gasoline without ethanol as much as possible. I think that might influence the milage.

I got an Indian FTR1200 S, with some specials on it. but I have the normal spedometer, not a LCD screen. for me, simpler is better. I have tons of fun with it. going to work with it, driving with my friends and wife. for me, I have no regrets. I am too a large dude. (6 feet, 33 inches. or 1.93 meters) this bike was almost made for me. PS, having a adjustable valve exhaust, makes this beast ROAR! (jekill and hide exhaust) kids love it. some neighbours dont. but hey, its adjustable. so everyone can be happy. for me the major drawback is refeulling, sometimes I am pumping longer than a car. sad.

I bought one on august 8th and have had a bit of trouble staying off it. For any that haven't heard many of the FTR models are now recalled for problems with a leaky coolant junction (sadly noticed some leaking on mine) Spite's pretty accurate, very heavy price point (mine was like 18 and didn't come with any of the extra carbon fiber so I probably got ripped off) but very fun bike, incredibly comfy (at least for me) very visceral feeling suspension (every bump goes straight to you) the throttle openings are not impressive for an 18k (or 12 I guess) bike, comes with a cat (most bikes will eventually) I personally have had some issues with cold starts and performance when its cold, In my opinion, this is probably one of the best performance motorcycles you can buy, no it wont do 200, you probably wont even get it to 140, but the platform is an absolute monster, and its difficult to say what is really "better" than the ftr because nothing can really compare to the ftr, if you put it up against naked bikes it doesn't fit, if you put it up against sports or cruisers it doesn't fit, in many ways it really is its own thing. Perfectly proportionate. I love the ftr, Hope it doesn't get discontinued.

@@spitescorner That would really quick with an average rider or not so average. Stock wheelbase bikes even long ones have traction and wheelie issues. I'll keep my eyes open for an FTR running at the drag strip.

Love the progress you've made on the channel! I'd say the closet competitor to the FTR is the Sportster S, at least on paper. This bike looks a lot better between the two though.

The most apparent competition IMO would be other rowdy 1100/1200cc bikes with lots of heritage. So - BMW R Nine T - the premium one - not the scrambler or pure etc. Lots of heritage cool boxer twin engines with bags of character big muscle-looking bike with a long wheelbase - normy might look at the two and think they look quite similar. Also the BMW being a dry clutch and shaft dive you get that big shunt in the ass when you shift. Like you say you get form the FTR... I mean very different reasons for why you get that feeling from them but both have that quality. Then I'd say some of the heritage stuff from Triumph like the - Speed Twin / Thruxton / Scrambler XE even - all have big 1200 engines lot or torque. They all have top-shelf parts like Ohlins suspension and Brembo etc. Also, sound amazing with that 270 fire order so getting a similar sort of sound to the V-Twin. Honda CB1100EX is kind of in the same area I guess... but it's a Honda so Zzzzzzz lol. Ducati Scrambler 1100 Sport Pro that's another 1100 heritage V-twin with a sort of scrambler flat track sort of vibe to it... But that would be about all I can think of.

My '05 Buell XB12SCG with the factory race ECM and pipe put out about 113 HP and 100+ ft bls of torque and was the same kind of fun to ride. It handled great and I could go through canyons and leave it in 3rd or 4th and never have to shift much. It could also do a burnout from a dead stop in 5th gear. Not starting in 1st and shifting to 5th, starting in 5th. That front brake worked really good for that. Back in '05 my Buell was $10,495 so in todays dollar I guess $17k doesn't seem too bad for this bike. I did have to add my own carbon fiber on the Buell.

I own a base model '22, they start at $12999, comes with the softer sachs suspension, no TFT(analog/digital instead) and doesn't have a lot of the techy tech of the S or carbon(no IMUs, TC or anything) it does still get cruise control and ABS. Being so stripped down is what makes it a better bike, IMO, it makes you feel closer to the machine, the "I love it, but I don't love it" never crossed my mind. I just love it! Also lower price makes the purchase easier to swallow. The flaws are still there, the jerky fueling and overall low range(I got 120 miles on 3/4 of a tank not being that aggressive averaging 60ish mph). Performance wise, My brother has a z900 and doing some pulls displays similar straight line performance, the FTR handles much better though. My biggest gripe is a 125 mph limiter from the factory and very few flash options. Lloydz garage is the way to go for that.

Owned this bike for 1.5 years now and have to say you are SPOT ON! Great bike but flawed. Herky Jerky at slow speeds...check! Great at higher speeds...check! Torquey as hell (in a fun way)...check! I'm 60 and in really good shape, but my body cramps in ways it's never cramped on any other bike but damn, I love this bike! Oh yeah, and the fuel mileage...it's ridiculous! You're doing good if you can get a range of 100 miles. However, I rode this bike to Daytona and can tell you that taking a break every 50-100 miles on this bike is fine

Too much to agree with. I have an '15 Indian Scout w/6.6k miles yet 6 owners? Fueling under the curve is Herky-Jerky & I kept calling it 'driveline lash' that I could simply tighten out of the belt. Wrong. Oh, but the sounds are glorious & than seamless powah in any gear. Now, my Scout is 559Lbs soaking wet- which in my mind is crazy heavy for a bike with a 5' footprint? Conversely, I love that stability- what cross wind?- on the highway. Funny, I want a 'naked' midsize bike, but, I really don't need the 128HP & 87 ft/Lbs. of torque and might even be happy with the Polaris 999.6cc engine used so well in the '60' series of Scouts. Hmmm, gotta ponder that below we discuss....Haha great vid, I thought you & Yammie Noob were great together but sensed you might do your own. Good on Ya!

I've been doing some math...Average life expectancy for a male in the US is 77. I'm 42. That means I have 35 years or, 1820 weeks left. 1 SC Sandwich / wk would cost $7575.38. If it was *any* Chick-fil-a item and I got a SC Sandwich meal, that would be $13,222.85. YMMV. So, paying for Chick-fil-a would be the cheaper of the two options for me. I'll have the FTR lol

I tested this bike about a year ago, and i expected to love it. I'd had my eye on getting one since the first model year was announced! Like you, i thought it was a great bike, but i just didn't LOVE it. It was a bit of a let down. The leg room was definitely an issue for my 34" inseam, comfortable for the half hour i had it, but i could see it being annoying riding all day. It's pretty, and it's fun, but at that price it needs to check all the boxes. I am really enjoying your content, being unhindered by the other channel is a good thing, they were dumbing you down!

I own a 19 FTR-RR. I run the Lloyd’z V6 tune which smooths out throttle response and improves power/torque. It also removes the speed limiter. As far as the suspension is concerned it is completely adjustable and should be set properly for your weight. I am 6’ - 175 lbs. The tester is 6’4”” and I guess 220-230 lbs. He needs to set it up for his weight. My son-in-law owns an MT09. The performance of these machines is actually very similar. The MT09 is significantly less expensive, however my son-in-law’s MT09 lacks lean angle sensitive traction control. Yes - the FTR will easily wheelie. You can turn wheelie mitigation on/off from the touch screen. I love the look, sound and characteristics of V-twins. The FTR is completely different than metric sport bikes in a very good way. Ride one and you will understand.

Thanks for the honest review and for pointing out the herky-jerky throttle (thanks fuel-infected deceleration fuel cutoff for that). My last bike was like that and I can't tell you how frustrating it was when I just wanted to cruise in a fuel-efficient manner but instead got repeatedly kicked in the tailpipe by the bike surging forward. The FTR has been on my radar for a while, and many of those downsides I'm willing to overlook for such a cool bike, but I'll wait a bit for Indian for figure their fueling out. I think it's because a lot of manufacturers are trying to work around stricter emission regulations while also making their bikes torque/speed monsters: they neuter the throttle to meet regulations near idle / at low RPMs, but then instantly switch to full force outside of the "regulated throttle zone", which, as a commuter and lazy rider, is really fricking annoying.
