Look up the Qattara depression project in Egypt. The plan was to connect a depression in the land to the sea, so a lake would be created. And they were thinking about using nukes for the connecting canal. iirc RealLifeLore made a video about it a while ago.

Interesting side note: Even though they didn't actually set off the nuke,c they still managed to contaminate the site with radioactive waste. They dug up a bunch of contaminated soil from the Nevada test site, and spread it around the Project Chariot site to see how dangerous it really was. The University of Alaska sent a team out to test the soil like 10 years ago, and it's still radioactive.

I visited the Sedan crater in the Nevada test site back in the 90’s. It was an incredible hole with perfectly smooth sides going down into a flat bottom. The radioactivity was still enough so that I was told to only stay for a few minutes and gawk at the best damn hole I’ve ever seen.
