So, besides getting the Danube wrong on the map, there is a statement that cargo ships go through the mouth of the Danube River. That is impossible, it's a protected area, a wild delta. There is a canal connecting the black sea to the river which avoids completely the delta.

@@twinkieman237 All the versions of the canal connect to the Danube and the Mediterranean. Neither the Danube nor the Mediterranean are the topic of the video, but you cannot talk about the canal without them. Also, their geography literally determines where the canal can be built. So they are very relevant and getting their geography wrong diminishes the video. An example of something irrelevant to the video would be the Gibraltar or Crimea. Just admit that you said smth dumb and stop. Everyone says wrong stuff occasionally and that's fine. Being stubbornly wrong instead of moving on - that's stupid.

To add some important points: Large container ships woldn't be able to sail up the Danube even with the canals, because almost all the bridges over the Danube are way too low and the Danube itself is not that deep on many places, so they would have to unload to far smaller barge ships anyways. From this point on I see no reason why trains can't be used. It would be much more cheaper to buff up the existing railroads since they already connect to large factories and warehouses directly or pass by really close to them to which you would need to transport the stuff anyways. How can be cheaper and more "green" altering flows of large rivers and transporting to some big cities via ships then transporting to the real destination via other ways instead of transporting from sea ports directly to the end points without choking up in some central cities? Also cutting through the balcans would bring havoc on anyone living downstream from that point near the Danube. Serious water shortage and environmental issues could occur. The more I think about this whole concept the more ridiculous it looks just to save money.. Perhaps bringing home to europe some of the production and ceasing to exploit slave work and coal based energy plants in China would make much more sense and make the world much more green and crysis tolerant via decentralization.

@@jimjimsandburg2754 I personally think the Kra Canal in Thailand that you mentioned might be a strategic outpost to weaken Singapore, who is more US-aligned in ASEAN. Maybe they planned to make Singapore poor as many trade and commerce ships past through the Malacca Strait which is not far from my home, ships and trade are the reasons Singapore is prospering. Another suspicion is the Forest City, which I live only minutes away, rumors had it that the city was built to attract Singaporeans and Chinese to live in the city far from Singapore itself as I already said is more US-aligned. Hi @RealLifeLore. Love to watch your videos. Actually the idea to connect the Meditaranian sea to the Danube was born around 1800. The Austrian industrial Revolution wants to connect Vienna with Triest, the main Shipport of Austria at this time. There was a canal built now known as "Wiener Neustädter Kanal" and is still active as "normal" River between "Wiener Neustadt" and Baden. was mostly used as transportation for coal or wood the main energy ressources so far. Actually the project was only planned to run at this route Vienna-Wiener Neustadt-Sopron-Györ-Ljubljana-Vrhinka and stopped in Vrhinka because it was at this time not technical possible to built. Afterwards the project has been cancelled because, a train connection was built(Semmeringbahn).

You did not take into consideration the following facts: i) the existing Danube-Black Sea Canal (made in Romania under Nicolae Ceausescu's communist regime) - which already shortens the path towards the Danube in the Black Sea; and ii) the Montreux Convention which grants the free passage of civilian vessels between the Black Sea and Mediterranean Sea through the Bosporus and Dardanelles Straits. As a matter of fact, the construction of the Danube-Black Sea Canal required an investment of about 2 billion dollars. The initial ROI was 50 years. However, the operation of the canal brings annual revenues of only three million euros, which means a return on investment in over 600 years.

The only problem may be between Greece and North Macedonia, but for the economic development the canal would bring, I believe they would not allow their disagreements to affect the project.

As an ordinary Chinese, I noticed that the friends who discussed in the post below were all saying that it was the Chinese who wanted to build this canal. Let me clarify that this is a project proposed by the Serbian government to the Chinese government on its own initiative. The Chinese government, scholars, and officials previously estimated that no one knew about the idea of connecting two rivers in the Balkans to build artificial canals. The Chinese built this artificial canal without any problems. For China, it is purely a commercial project without any political purpose. This canal is not a project worth mentioning for the Chinese in terms of design, construction, operation, management and funding. I hope everyone will only discuss whether the Serbian government and other governments have the political will to build it.

5:50 Comparing one barge to "42 train cars" is highly misleading. Large European freight trains regularly 40+ train cars and around 2000 metric tons each - so the same as your barge. Plus the train will get the cargo closer to the destination. How are fossil fuel driven ships "much more environmentally friendly" than the largely electrified rail freight network?? Genuine nonsense. We need to be expanding rail freight right now, not destroying waterways.

The 2nd option is a crap und leads straight to the Brenner which lies almost at a heigt of 1400m. And it wouldn't be so much better if you take a route from the Adriatic Sea through Slovenia/Croatia to Hungaria. It would be much easier to use a route via Rhone, Saone, Doubs and the Belfort Gap in eastern France which leads to the Rhine somewhere near Basel, Switzerland.

I wish a day when all big powers will compete in terms of building roads, canals, tunnels to make life for business communities and ordinary citizens easier.

:D, I noticed that too. Im pretty sure it will be more efficient with Struma and Iskar rivers/ Maritza and Iskar/ Maritza and Osam connect, ofc you'll have to spend some kms digging, but it still sound better + It goes through 2 countries not 3

Has anyone ever seen the Vardar river? During summer, at many points people are fishing right in the middle of the river and the water way below waist level. No way that river can become navigable. It's too fast, too shallow (the maximum depth of the river is just 4 meters) and the coast around it on many places are tall and narrow canyons.
