well its not that different from most supernatural/fantasy settings. Spirits get mana from mages as a result they appear in physical plane and can be used to fight. Mana is channeled by emotions. Positive emotions summon good spirits when dark emotions summon evil spirits.

The fact that Hao became so brokenly op that the creator put the manga on a literal 9 year hiatus because he couldn't figure out how to defeat LITERAL GOD should be enough proof to show just how broken these characters can get.
