The INSTAGRAM PROBLEM for PHOTOGRAPHERS

My PROBLEM with INSTAGRAM //
The way that photographers choose how to present their work is an important part of the artwork, it’s part of the story and the concept. A photograph is an artwork and its form is just as important as that of a sculpture or painting.
Instagram is a fantastic tool at your disposal. It empowers you to connect with potentially millions of people and instantly share your work with others. But remember it is just a tool - just like the lenses you shoot with or the software you process your shots with. In the same way you don’t only shoot at f/1.4 just because your lens can do that, or you don’t add lens flares into each of your shots simply because Photoshop has that function, you shouldn’t let Instagram be your last port of call in your image-making process just because it’s there.
Tools are there to help realise our creative vision, not to define it.

Hi Jamie: I use instagram to post fun pictures for my friends as I am moving away from FB, and not a as a photo gallery of my work (I'm an amature). I follow a number of Pro's and use their images as inspiration. I often check their websites to see the "full" size images. I do see another issue with Instgram being the need to post "epic" photos and giving some people FOMO, anyway keep up the great work, really enjoy your approach to photography

I found it terribly stressful trying to work out what to post and when to post. Especially since I take photos of all sorts of things that don't really relate, all I want to do it share them. I think I'll dedicate my insta to the sorts of photos that do well on there like photos of people. All I have to do know is stress out about what hashtags to use. I think I would much rather it didn't exist but I feel like I won't be successful without it.

I was teetering on the edge of signing up for an Instagram account despite having been an analog photographer for 59 years. I've exhibited work up to 16x20 which is the largest I could do in my own darkroom and ran a communal photo gallery in the 70's. Your commentary about "experiencing" large works resonated with me. I will not bother with Instagram, no matter how "relevant" it is to photography today.
@valhakun
@valhakun 5 жыл бұрын
Instagram is NOT, has never been, and hopefully will never be the app *for* photographers. Obviously, Facebook's marketing strategy and the photographers' demand for wider exposure overlap to a degree. But ultimately, the closest thing to experiencing photography on a screen right now would be via a personal website.

@@MorningCoffeeDaily Mobile photography, yes. Back when it was way less impressive. IG was limited by low resolution images, much heavier compression, and mostly caught attention for its "filters", that were meant to mimic physical artifacts of film. Ironically, the vast majority of its young user base couldn't even feel nostalgic about them, treated them as some sort of revelation in photography, and the service succumbed. Then Facebook happened. Today it's pretty much this: twitter.com/like_gudim/status/1144319795782914049

Simon WoodburyForget I was responding to the message of the video. Of course there is a difference between various ways to experience photography, whether it's on a social network, custom website, printed album, gallery, etc. Massive difference.
@kptoca
@kptoca 5 жыл бұрын
@@SimonWoodburyForget Yes, an image is an image. Add more images to one and you have an album, a presentation and display of your individuality. A website could serve the way galleries and prints are used by photographers to convey further their style and message. Having Instagram grids is nice, but could not be enough to justify most dedicated photographers vision in showcasing their art. A website is art itself: the fonts and text sizes, the margins and spacing, the animations-these all add to the narrative and expression which Instagram currently lacks in. Perhaps it's what Instagram is. Simple, and not the right vehicle for artistry, even though currently there has never been a bigger platform for photography to be viewed and celebrated by communities on a mobile screen.

I'm relatively young (in college) and have only been making pictures for a couple years now-- my entire idea of what makes a good photograph was originally influenced by Instagram. Now that I'm studying photojournalism and looking at much more work not on Instagram, the photographs I take are vastly different. Sometimes I still catch myself being very influenced by the platform (a tendency to arrange galleries in rows of three, for one). But photographs are indeed meant to be experienced in so many different ways, which are often impossible to achieve on Instagram's feed or grid. Fantastic video, Jaime, and another wonderfully perspective take on the medium.

Jamie, amazing job overall. The best point relates to content/editing. You've designed the video so that someone can pause and follow if they need to go slower but if someone's familiar with the technique, they can just let it play without getting too bored. Fine balance achieved - Bravo! Excellent tone, great knowledge and humble. Instagram? Still haven't got an account. My "work" suffers from being viewed on cell phones and badly calibrated laptop screens. Explaining to people that they are not seeing my work is a bit of a waste of time so unfortunately, I make some of my work for this purpose, resize and sharpen, lift shadows etc specifically for crappy social media which these shots are destined for. My more subtle work cannot be viewed as intended by the people I would share it with so they get to see it on my screens or in print.

This is an interesting topic for me as well, Alex. I felt something similar and I stayed away from it until they allowed for other ARs than 1:1. I mainly shoot landscape orientation and closer to 16:9, but I used the experience of uploading there also as a way to start practicing 1:1 and 4:5, and overall portrait orientation. I think as long as you don't take it as something written in stone, and specially if you keep your RAW files before final crop (as long as you don't shoot analog) it can play on your favour. E.G. I started playing around with panoramic ARs distributed in 3 tiles as well :)

Jamie, at first I was thinking "here we go with another know it all" telling me what I should and shouldn't do like they are the end all to be all of my world of photography. But then, I started listening to your works, really listening and what you did, in words, is what I find with Art and that is it makes you think. I am almost 60, have been a non working photographer all my life but have been studying photography and practicing for many years. I am not the best but I love to create. I believe, FB and Instagram have made me think less about creating and more about what will give me the most likes. Listening to this and other videos of yours recently, have made me rethink my approach to my work. I have no self esteem, so posting on the online medium has been uplifting because I have a few followers and they like most of my work and comment on it too. So, now, I have to go back and think about how I present my work and what I am really trying to say with it. I know I am kind of rambling but my mind is on over drive now thinking about what you have said here and find a way to learn from it. Thank you.

Also I got an amazing deal on a Canon PRO-10 last December. Now to me it's not done until it's printed. Manifesting the work in the real physical world is the final and true act of creation.

This is an excellent piece. Production quality was absolutely brilliant. One of your best. As someone who shoots for large print I have a real love/hate with IG and end up not posting most of my favourite images because the smartphone format takes away, much more than it offers.

As always, love the style and flow of your videos. You draw the viewer in because of both the execution of the “story” and your particularly thoughtful approach and views on the topic.

Wow, the presentation in this video was beautiful. I'm watching on a phone but I was honestly taken aback by the vertical video, and the way you animated it as if I was scrolling through Instagram. I also noticed your smooth-AF transitions between scenes. This was honestly a beautiful presentation and I just wanted to compliment you on that.

Man, I don't get it. how come you don't have at least a million subscribers? This is one of the best channels I've seen on this platform. Everything is so interesting and well presented. This is quality channel! Thanks for your work Jamie!!! and I liked how you made the whole video vertical, while viewing it I really felt that limit that something is missing, and at the end of the video I wanted to stretch the picture. You made me experience what you were talking about.;) That is an awesome work! I think if you showed that photograph of the tires in a normal way when you zoomed back that would give that contrast and would help people to taste that full size image and realize the difference.

Few years ago I came across your video where you talked about getting a 5d mark 2 in todays time to practice photography. Back then you didn't have this many views and I had commented that I wish to see you grow more because your content is so genuine. I am happy to see that happening now. Great work in bringing the art back to photography.

I can't really think of anything to say that hasn't already been said, but still couldn't go without leaving a comment complimenting this amazing video. Your hard work shows and I appreciate it immensely. I am very glad you've decided to start this channel and that it's made its way into my recommendations.

I have been struggling with similar problems myself lately - I get the feeling that when people consume my work on Instagram, it's a matter of them briefly glancing at it and thinking "oh, that's nice" then swiping up, for it to never be seen again. Which doesn't exactly encourage me to put effort into making the images in the first place, if that's the only way they're experienced. Unfortunately, Instagram is really the only platform that regular people use to consume photography - flickr is basically dead, and the rest tend to only attract other photographers or people looking for cheap stock photos. If I don't post on Instagram, nobody will experience my work at all - not even fleetingly. Apart from putting on a physical exhibition of my own (not likely) there aren't really many other options for getting general exposure. I think I've mostly come to accept this - and perhaps the only people who will experience my work as I intend will be friends and family who I can present it to properly. But, maybe that's OK for now.

I am a nurse and my life is the life and death and sickness of other people. I first got involved with photography as a means of escape and for the joy but also i am deeply attracted to the technical aspect as my mind inhabits that space constantly. Never once did I think of myself of an artist or with someone who had a story to tell or if anyone could experience my work. Thank you for opening my eyes to what can be.

Fantastic insight Jamie. I've just recently been curating some work I did almost 10 years ago and figuring out the best way to exhibit it. There's a few prints I had done for myself but these few hundred shots from the project have only ever existed on my hard drive. Your video makes me wonder if they've ever actually existed at all.

I had just switched to my laptop because I like the bigger screen better not knowing this video was intended for a phone screen. I am definitely switching back to my phone because your work deserves that much respect. I know I'll enjoy it as much as I always enjoy all your work. I love how you did that when talking about the art form and the different ways it can be displayed. That is just brilliant. Thank you for making this.

Thank you. It’s not really intended for any screen as such, it’s just using a phone aspect ratio to make it difficult to watch to emphasise the point.

another great video and subject that needed to be covered and discussed - thank you JW. I have recently gone back to the halcyon days when I printed film for my A-level and Foundation Art course. I recently produced a coffee table book of street art; and at the moment, I am in the midst of printing my largest prints yet (A2 size) to frame and show as a mini exhib at a bar in Deptford during summer. It is really fulfulling, so I totally advocate the points you make.

I really appreciate the message in this video, and it does really resonate with me. As a (and I can't stress this enough) novice photographer, I really only have Instagram as a means of sharing my work. I have certain shots which are my favourite, but I'm not sure if I have the technical expertise or editing skills to bring out the best in each shot; so I can't justify blowing them all up in print. Also, seeing as Instagram has always been predominant since I have started photography makes it the first 'game' to play to reach an audience. Secondly, just want to say the animations in this video are so goddamn engaging, and they've been done so well. Great work 😊
