I know it sounds crazy, but we actually have to take possession with legal documentation via copyright and notice to transfer liability back to an entity using our private info. It's not crazy, but rather unconventional.

of course after watching the evergreen video, I noticed the name issue. Instead of trashing Sal, I did a 2 minute research on Google which taught me why there were two different names involved. Sal is of course correct on both the naming as well as that there is no reason to attack him or anyone else. Getting curious is fine. Sal is always grascious in answering questions. Before Sal came onto the scene, I knew nothing of the shipping industry. Now I know very little (a big improvement) with a trajectory of knowing more after each video -thanks Sal.

Honestly, I think just saying "ignore them" is the wrong approach, while Sal's take on it was far more appropriate. People shouldn't silently need to silently sit back and accept torrents of hate and anger because "ignorant people are ignorant." These people are coming to a person's KZbin channel, and treat it as their personal waste dump. This makes the comment section a worse place to be, not only for the channel owner, but everyone else that is interested in discussing the video. It's perfectly reasonable to call people out on such behavior, and even ban them should it get too egregious. Imagine going to a concert with a few thousand attendees where suddenly a few dozen people decide to call the performer all sorts of nasty names. Would you expect everyone to silently sit and take it, or would you want security to escort the trouble-makers out of the premises?

A lot of the time this is down to blocked words, though it can also happen algorithmically based on AI suggestions. Google's had a long history of their AI tools being rather inconsistent. Regardless, this isn't exactly a strong argument for why a channel owner shouldn't be calling out undesired behavior on their own channel.

i myself am a right-to-work non-union warehouse worker at HEB Grocery Corp and the Houston warehouse is losing daily throughput volume to the brand new automated warehouse in Temple, TX, right now. My work has gone down. Good thing for us is, NOBODY lost their job. HEB Grocery bosses pledged, at the outset, to re-assign people to other positions at the company if they wanted to stay working for HEB Grocery Corp. The video of the automated warehouse they showed us is crazy awesome. There’s actually lots of other jobs available both in our company AND in other companies.

We used to have container shipping out of Portland Oregon , then everybody got greedy and the operators closed the terminal now everything goes to Seattle or Long Beach and then gets trucked. Affected not only the workers for the terminals but all the ancillary support companies. A lot of families suffered.

Farmers who sent their products through Portland, including those who barged them down the Snake and Columbia Rivers, suffered major cost increases in order to get their products to Seatac. Basically, the union penalized those whose livelihoods depended on the union being there and doing its job. The union workers moved on, probably to equal or better jobs, leaving behind a mess.

I worked as a professor for years. When you get up there and talk and teach and facilitate learning for your students…sometimes you mix up a term, event, concept, etc. Because eventually everyone will, and the more you talk the more you’re playing with the law of averages. The "ship name" on the side of the hull reminds me of an early 2000's story. There is a shoot scheduled for the SoCal OPAREA. The Navy range safety aircraft is trying to call "motor vessel MATSON" on VHF Ch 16. I contact the aircraft and pass along that is the company name. A few minutes later I hear them call "M/V Lihue". One of the best additions for bridge equipment during my career was AIS. It was nice to have vessel name, call sign, destination and ETA available for the watch standers.

So going by the Evergreen/Evergiven comments every ship in the vast Evergreen company fleet has the same name going on what is painted in big letters on the mid-body of the ship…………….. From my edition of the Maritime Medical Guide I suspect that you had a very severe outbreak of Bot-itis and may need quarantining to prevent further spread of this awful virtual infection……. Keep up the good work of keeping us all, seafarers, ex-seafarers and non seafarers, informed of what’s going on in shipping - as a now nearly 5 years retired seafarer the channel is required viewing even though my only connection to US shipping was handing over the Maersk Lines Singapore Flagged Safmarine Ngami to MLL and she was then transferred to the US flag. That little ship became the Maersk Chesapeake about 18 months ago.

The new deep water container ship port in the City of Chancay, Peru, is opening this week and is fully automated. The ILWU had better send a delegation to Peru to see what the Chinese, and Cosco in particular, have done down there. It is the container ship port of the future. No longshoremen are needed at the new port, nor are truck drivers needed to move the containers around. The Chinese container shippers like Cosco will be totally avoiding the American ports of Long Breach, Los Angeles, and Oakland by using the new port they have built in Chancay, Peru, for all containers destined for the countries in South America.

Containers offloaded from ship in North America can't get to South America by road. There is no road. If your destination is South America, you won't be offloading in the North regardless if port is automated or not.

Sal, with regard to the criticism of your knowledge on names of ships, leased containers baffled some people. I would inform a trucker of the SS line (CMA, Yang Ming, MSC, etc) and immediately be contradicted by the trucker with, "No, it's a Triton" or Florens, CAI, etc... the trucker would scream. It was very frustrating. I feel your pain.

The understanding has always been, that if these foreign companies want access to the US Ports and the US Economy, they have to pay the wages of the US workers. This agreement has been in place for decades. Now, the foreign corps are trying the replace the US workers with their own automation systems. They still want access to our ports and our economy, but they want to pay themselves for that access. and bypass or eliminate the US workers.

The fewer workers you can use to accomplish the same things, the more workers you have to now do other things. Thinking of this in terms of "lost jobs" is short-sighted and self-defeating. If your concern is foreign interests gaining at the expense of the port's home country, the home country should be pushing to get their cut in other ways, perhaps through a fee structure for goods passing through, perhaps for ownership or operations licensing if the port is not owned or operated by domestic interests, or perhaps by finding ways to outcompete the foreign automation systems domestically. I can think of a few other possible ways to try to outmaneuver external interests seeking to take advantage of a port's home country in some way, but even in a worst-case scenario of capitulation and complete replacement, you now have a bunch of workers that can go do other productive things in your economy, and increased trade through the port. That's better for basically everyone in the system. Even the current port workers themselves, unless you believe that the port workers are too incompetent to go do anything else productive in the economy, or that they have currently carved themselves out an artificial market distortion in their favor that is so good they can't find anything else close to it on a more open playing field.

​@flyingsword135 I would agree with you if automation ACTUALLY made things more efficient. But reality is, it doesn't. It just costs these multibillionaire foreigners less money. The media will say the US ports rate near the bottom of global efficiency. But there are several valid reasons for this. We don’t use slave labor, we don’t pay 3rd world wages, we don’t turn a blind eye to safety regulations, which prevents 100’s deaths from happening here. In the Middle East and Asia there are giant man-made islands in the middle of nowhere that were created for the sole purpose of container and sea going vessel operations. You can’t compare that to Charleston SC, that exists in the middle of thriving city full of narrow streets and historic architecture. Or Savannah GA, which requires a 2.5 hour trip up the Savannah river, 15 minutes to the spin the vessel around, and then another 2.5 hour trip back out to the ocean once operations are finished. And besides, ports aren’t chosen for for their efficiency so much as they are chosen for location. If Samsung is sending a container of Flat Screen TVs to a Target distribution center in Miami, it doesn’t matter if the port in Felixstowe in England is 2 moves an hour faster. The Container is still coming to the US. There is no other alternative. And while supply chain speed does matter for some sorts of specialty cargo, the vast majority of containers are just “dry vans” and those TV’s that are going to Target? They will be on sale for 699.99 whether they come off the ship at 7:15 am or 7:30 am. It doesn’t really matter. For every 1000 ILA jobs lost to automation, about $100 Million dollars gets stripped out of the local economies, out of local business, and from local families every year. Machines don’t pay taxes to fund Police and Schools, and giving more and more control of our logistics and supply chain system to foreign companies is a Security Risk as well. Foreign owned automation at our ports eats away at the foundation of our Country. It’s a fleecing of the US, and it should anger every red blooded American regardless of Political Party.

I don't think the auto industry union has as much leverage, partly because the car manufacturers have more options. Between geography and ocean currents I assume there are much greater restrictions on where you can build a port compared to a car factory. That enables them to build a new automated factory somewhere and initially it is only for a new line of product so no jobs are impacted. Maybe the new product is a flop so they stop making it and switches the factory over to making stuff that are being done but humans ...

Can the problem be solved partially by stop hiring new workers and let the labor force decline the natural way by retirements and workers leaving on their own ? But that would reduce the union membership and the fees associated with it ?

Automation still requires ILA maintenance when it’s working. You would be surprised how often an automated crane needs human interaction.

It’s the jobs lost from the equipment being automated is the problem. Let’s say one machine that requires two workers to operate it in one shift that four workers in a day multiplied by X amount of equipment on that terminal.

Automation can and will make that possible, but its a step by step process. Look beyond your wallet and plan for the future. We will reach a post-scarcity society; these steps are necessary to do so.

I really hope the the ILA and USMX come together again and hash out this technology issue. If I had to guess, the X in USMX is meant to indicate a union between the various shippers, similar to the X in CSX, the union between the Chessie System and the Seaboard Coast Line. That's just my speculation, though.
