The nature of naval warfare is evolving - with advancing drone tech leading the charge - but not all of the world's navies and regions will be impacted the same.

@@avarielblackwing6613 I'm not sure it makes much sense to have a factory at sea. You still have to transport all the raw materials and components to the ship. So then why not just transport the finished product to the ship? 🤷‍♂ Do those sci-fi examples address that?

In 2005 I saw locked Martin's drone subs. They were testing them from my local inlet. They usually tried to get out at odd times but I was commercial fishing and around that area a lot. For 2 years I would see it probably 2 times a week. I would say drones will be used from mother ships to be out in front of the fleet with the capability to attack and or call in attacking suicide drones. The possibility of drones dropped by air to ambush the enemy.
@johnnyb8629
@johnnyb8629 2 сағат бұрын
What I don't hear anyone talk about is that subs use loitering torpedo's that can simply sit and wait, months even before being triggered to effect enemy assets. So survivability of subs during war time would mean as little movement as possible up until called upon and survivability after any action is small due to their movement will alert the opposing forces to their location even if only a loitering torpedo.

You missed one area that the US Navy would find itself in a constrained patch of water, and that’s participating in a Marine landing where it’s ships by design have to be close to shore and in some cases stationary.
@maxpower3990
@maxpower3990 2 сағат бұрын
Even in WW2 landings unsupported by weeks of naval and air strikes ended in disaster, such as Dieppe. If the Marines launched an opposed landing today it would be against an enemy that has been bombed into being unable to fight back effectively. The US in the pacific campaign methodically removed all threats from the area, like enemy warships and aircraft before they launched the island invasions. They would do the same thing today.

No they’re not and have been since they were invented over a hundred years ago. Submarines are very good at a few jobs such as deny enemy access to an area and ambushing ships but they can’t project power onto the land as well as a surface fleet with aircraft carriers, they can’t do a blockade, they can’t carry and protect troops to a far away battle field or supplies for that army. Britain’s also just launched and commissioned 2 new aircraft carriers, HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales, so obviously they don’t think they can build an unstoppable fleet with just submarines.

I think what has changed is the pricing structure... most of those things you mentioned are high value assets that lean heavily on the quality over quantity ethos which is fine for short duration wars and fast interdiction's... but what we've seen in Ukraine is that cheep (relatively) off the shelf components are easier to procure on mass in long drawn out slugging matches between relatively even forces... there also far..far easier for poorer nations and none state actors to deploy in quantity to effectively punch well above their weight when facing far more advanced adversaries

My prediction is that there will not be a 2028 US presidential election. November 2024 was the last US presidential election. The US government is too heavily indebted, and a major debt crisis will unfold before November 2028. The debt crisis will make it obvious to all US citizens that massive social, political, and economic reforms are necessary. There will also be important shifts in religious beliefs in the US. Although a majority of the current residents of the US will still be alive in 2028, the nation will end up so changed by the trauma and subsequent reforms, that the position currently known as "president" may no longer exist at all, in the government controlling the territory that is currently considered to be the United States of America. Additionally, a smarter than human artificial general intelligence (AGI) may have already taken over control of (at least part of) the world by then. There is a good chance that the territory formerly known as the "United States of America" will be more under AI control, rather than human control, by November 2028. But, that's just my prediction. Only God knows the real future. Humans will figure it out when the events actually unfold according to God's will, whatever that may be.

Hmm, what's the advantage of manufacturing your weapons while at sea? You'll still need all the components, i.e. circuit boards, motors, etc. And if you're talking manufacturing every component from raw materials, that's a huge amount of machinery and processing needed to do that. Why not instead just stock more of those drones on the ship to begin with. In place of all those CNC machines and what not, just put thousands of those drones, pre-built.

The concept behind replicator to build munitions (drones?) aboard actual naval ships doesn't make any sense to me. Arsenal ships that can approach the edge of a theatre, drop off their drones/munitions and slip back out of easy engagement range would make a lot more sense than taking up space, weight and resources on front line warships for drone assembly. Every ton on a warship should be used efficiently for logistics, defense, power, weapons or sensors. Building drones can easily be done on land, where space is not a premium and supply chains are easier. Why not pre-build stockpiles of drones on land and then have ships pre-loaded with drones? You could then have supply ships or arsenal ships bring in more during the conflict if required. Making the drones on the actual ships sounds like computer-game nonsense to me. Sure it's great for RTS games where your units never run out of ammo but it's not practical in real life where stuff doesn't magically appear out of thin air.

Very simplified answer: The Irish had just won independence from the UK after the WWI, and were pretty anti-English (the government, that is, especially the president, De Valera) during the WWII. (Although in practice, the Irish people helped the Allied where they could, tens of thousands volunteering in the UK to fight and hundreds of thousands migrated to work in the war economy.) And afterwards, when NATO was formed: "It refused to join NATO due to its sovereignty claims over Northern Ireland, which was administered by the United Kingdom, a NATO member." So, Northern Ireland and the dispute over it with the UK.
