Canada’s student permit system was being abused, the international student cap and work permit changes will help to address this. That’s according to Benjamin Tal, deputy chief economist at CIBC, who says it will take a few years however before we start seeing the effects on our housing supply and labour force.

100% but are they really trying to remove that abuse? I don't believe that for a second. Look at the number of "refugees" being supported with taxpayer's money. And the taxes we pay: government "fees", hst, property, provincial, federal ...... Additionally, look at how many uneducated and unskilled immigrants we get. Who supports then?

@sincroai If you think stoking up housing prices by massive immigration is sustainable, you are delusional. Blindly resorting to immigration is lazy and irresponsible, that's why the living standards for average people in immigration countries such as Canada and Australia have been declining, even those traditionally non-immigration countries which recently took in too many immigrants such as Germany. Immigration needs to be carefully planned and controlled in order to really benefit the society.

You really need to read stats before making generalizing comments. The numbers don’t lie. India has the largest millennial population in the world, and they can speak English and don’t go on welfare and social assistance like other communities. Canada is in a desperate need for more millennials and GEN Z, as the boomers are retiring at breakneck speed. Sure, they can bring in people from other countries, but when they go on social assistance and feed off the system like leeches and can’t even get a bus fare together, we’ll see how far the country goes.

Go back and look at "international students being refused access to food banks", they are required to come to Canada with enough money to fund their stay, but some have been abusing things to the furthest extent possible. Pressure on housing is one of the canary-in-the-coal-mine consequences of allowing diploma-mills run unchecked. But people need to stop and realize what diploma-mills actually are. They are private, unaccredited, schools exist to suck money out of their victims, and offer them worthless diploma's in fields they will never find a job in. Many of these unaccredited colleges, simply hire the students and thus it turns into a giant pyramid scheme.

My colleagues and I believe we heard this week from Miller: For higher populated provinces like Ontario a two year 50% cap (perhaps more)is being launched effecting Sept 2024 semester+. Less populated provinces, 35%. However certain students are cap-exempt, i.e. physicians, nurses, skilled trade workers. International students will need to attach a "provincial attestation" to their study permit. Meaning the student must legally verify (via Canadian standards) that ALL of their necessary documents are indeed authentic. Including per year showing they have $21,000 in savings (after their tuition is paid plus roundtrip travel costs). Elements of monthly bank records will need to be shown (if asked for) proving the money is indeed THEIRS plus THEY are using it to pay for things they need from WITHIN Canada. No fraud. No work permit for spouses. Unless the student is exempt, i.e. a physician. Hence eliminating all the fake marriages. Student's work permit expires upon graduation. Unless they qualify for exemptions. Caps/restrictions/strict-authentications. PRIVATE colleges investigated (foreign interference). Cda schools are no longer to be used for people solely wanting PR or, even worse, plan on staying in Cda illegally if disqualified. No more foreign agents, aka smugglers, cashing in too.

I had just relocated to northern B.C., and was attending a business fair at the local college. I noticed the majority of students seemed to be foreign. At the time, I was very enthusiastic about the arrangement. I went to a nursing class at the same college. The nursing instructor began with the words, "You will all pass". She was right, but it was because the class was not at all difficult (or even ethical). After living there for almost a decade, I started to catch on that the college brought massive amounts of money into the community. I also worked in a homeless shelter full of Canadian guests, staffed by many foreign students. It was a union job, so these students were definitely NOT cheap labor. Despite protocol, they would leave guests out in -35C, while laughing in their faces. When they weren't lying to, taking advantage of, and being extremely sadistic and abusive to our guests, they were scrolling on their phones not doing their jobs. I'm fine with bringing in nurses from other countries. As an ex-nurse, I know that the nursing "education" in Canada is a joke. Ask a nurse what the "nursing diagnosis" of "imbalanced energy field" means. The real cause of the nursing shortage before the pandemic was nurse to nurse abusiveness (Google "nurses eat their young"). So bringing in nurses from countries where the labor laws are more lax, so they are already used to the abuse, is a good idea.

@@TT-fq7pl you mean the cheques that were only necessary in the first place for most people because the gubmint stupidly forced them to shutter their business? The same cheques that went to people who frauds and criminals that won't ever pay them back, cheques to people who never needed the money, the same cheques that contributed to the gross domestic 'inflation' we're seeing now and the record deficit and spending in the past five years over all over federal cabinets in the last 40 years combined. Those cheques? I have a benefits package that already covers dental. Only took them 9 years to roll something like this out though; and they're missing their own deadline they agreed on the NDP with forcing people to wait until 2025. Better well late than never.. I guess?

@@SuperGirl-tf2wn "Stupidly forced them"? Listen. I understand that most of you anti-government conspiracy theorists had difficult and disadvantaged upbringings (usually with religion involved), but your tirades are really getting old now. I lost people to the virus, I was very sick with it myself, and I know how challenging and frightening that time was for everyone. I also know many people, my own family included, who very much appreciated receiving that government support. Is inflation a problem? Sure, but it depends partly on individual habits. When prices go up, be more disciplined in your spending. When times are good, be more responsible with putting money aside. And don't act as if your country owes you an easy life (my parents and grandparents certainly didn't have what everyone today expects to have). I agree with you on one thing: the Liberal dental plan is definitely the result of NDP pressure. That's why minority governments are so much better. But I suspect that you'd like to see the smarmy and phoney Pierre Polident win a majority. Then our children will finally be free of sexual grooming in schools and weird pronoun usage. Hooray!

Realistically, who cares if they go bankrupt? These colleges give degrees that aren’t worth anything, and those graduating from them are just using their admission as an excuse to get a PR (if not outright committing fraud which Indians are often known to do).

Many universities don’t have large number of international students. Some colleges will close which isn’t a bad things. Tuition will increase in certain schools which it should have already done in especially Ontario. Canada will be doing quantitative easing to support postsecondary education. There will still be 367k new international students next year which is still a large number.

While I agree they need to curb the immigration and money churn for these "immigration factories" there is a component that will be kind of sad. There are former students who are now currently working who will end up being booted out of the country and families will be split up due to this. They should go easy on existing scenarios and work on improving the process going forward.

If they think their citizens and native canadians are enough to fulfill the job market and making contribution for their country's economy then they have to close all the immigration programs as well as study programs for all the international students(not just targeting undergraduate students) for next two years. Then see who gonna impacted the most specially the universities and colleges of canada with empty chairs. They have to stop sending their delegations of canadian colleges and universities to other countries specially countries in south asia because i know some radical native canadians targeting and blaming only people of these countries but still their universities seeking an oxygen over there coz they know they generate 65% revenue of canadian education from these countries i not gonna named, so stop disrespecting and hurting the emotions of south asian people and asked your university delegations stop visiting there if you really dont wanna see them in canada. They are working as an specialist doctors, IT engineers and other professionals after investing heavy amount on canadian education, they are not begging for anything from canadian govt. There are several true stories available on internet sharing their bitter experiences for immigrate to canada. One person even quoted "EARNED IN DUBAI AND WASTED IN CANADA".

Canada is reducing the number of international students not banning international students. The number is still high considering Canada’s population. We likely still have one of the highest international student population based on our popularize size. Also Canada has a lot people on other temporary permits. Canada is just trying to reduce number of temporary permit holders so they will have a chance of securing PR eventually. Also trying to eliminate the non-genuine students who don’t even go to class and are in Canada to work. Also trying to shut down those who are running, especially private colleges in Canada, since provinces wouldn’t shut them down and has allowed private/public partnerships. The fact that there aren’t many limits of master, PhD and other shorterm postgrad programs means that Canada values genuine students.
@amyseaden9069

@@Stormshftera large percentage of international students are only studying in Canada to secure PR aren’t genuine students. International students studying not because they are genuine students but because they think this is the easiest way to secure PR are naive and innocent? They are taking advantage of Canada as well. Many prioritize working over studying. Canada hasn’t closed the international student program and is still accepting a large number of students. They are reducing numbers which will actually benefit international students. With the current numbers most international students would struggle to obtain PR and would have to return home. At lower numbers their chance of obtaining PR increases.
