Growing up as a kid in the 80s (yes, I’m old) in the UK, Cosgrove Hall was a massive part of my childhood, from Dangermouse to Postman Pat, the BFG to Terry Pratchett’s Truckers, Wind in the Willows to Duckula, such a wonderful animation company!! This was also my first experience of animated Who and definitely my favourite. So gutted they never did more afterwards.

Great video as always Josh! I agree, the shot composition and lighting in these animated episodes is second-to-none. I do think, as they were not animating the whole thing, just the missing episodes, the choice to remain 'in keeping' with the 1960s production style was the right one. I definitely like this approach. The closer shots, more claustrophobic / intense, helps with the drama, as well as the useful ability to stay in MCU and CU and avoid leg animation! Terrific stuff.

I loved 'The Invasion'. It looked right immediately. I know I saw the story when first broadcast, but had little memory of it. Cosgrove Hall nailed it, simple as that. My all-time favourite animated story, though, is 'The Moonbase' (can you tell I prefer Cybermen to Daleks?), and that took my breath away. Lighting again, with the harsh light on the moon, to the sinister shadows in the base. And some of the shots are astonishingly good, like a zoom into the face of one of the Telosian bastards. I really enjoy rewatching it - and really, this story is the first one to show, seriously, how this scruffy, weird, and often (to those who think they know better) annoying little man is not to be underestimated. Ever. Yes, he's undoing your boot laces, but it's for a reason. Like another scruffy little man in fiction, Lt. Columbo, the Doctor has a mind like a steel trap. He has a damn good idea of who, why, what, and where, a long time before anyone else does. 👍👍👍

Cosgrove Hall 'Danger Mouse, Wind in the Willows, Count Duckula, Noddy etc' did a good job on animated Eps 1 & 4, If I have to nitpick the clothes Zoe worn in the beginning of Ep.1 is not the same as it's Original Transmission cause the previous story 'And later on in this story' she was wearing her sparkle outfit, Although it really didn't bug me as much as 5:32 this in the animation of The Underwater Menace when Jamie worn the same clothes as he did in stories like The Macra Terror but clearly he was still wearing his OG highlander clothes when he first joined the Doctor Ben and Polly.

It was interesting hearing about how the characters never actually walk in the animation. I actually never noticed that and the methods of getting around the issue remind me a lot of shows like Captain Scarlet as the characters never walked in that show (because marionettes) and instead only ever stood still or bobbled around in medium close up shots. It’s a clever way to get around a difficult issue In general, I think The Invasion animation works the best because of how natural it feels alongside the surviving episodes. It’s a kind of telesnaps brought to life approach which I don’t think was replicated in the same way again since the phenomenal Moonbase animation. I understand the need to go a bit more creative and stylised with full story animations but for stories like the Invasion which have more surviving episodes than missing, it’s so much nicer to slot it in well I watched The Invasion animation a while after it came out (because I was literally a baby when it first released) but I remembered liking it and I practically had my mind blown when I found out it was animated by the same company who made the original BFG movie which I loved so much as a kid Oh and as for the story itself, it’s one of my favourite Troughton stories. Maybe even top 3 alongside The Mind Robber and The Web of Fear

The Invasion was my second ever Doctor Who story, and I saw it on VHS with Nick Courtney abridging episodes 1 and 4. It was still amazing, but when I got the DVD (also around 2011 or 2012) it was just so exciting to see the episodes that until now I'd only heard about. Even now, there's something special about them, it really does feel like some sort of weird magic that's enabled them to come back. So I'm always onboard with a bit of praise for what is, in my opinion, still the best of the animated reconstructions (though several others come very close)!

The tug of war between recreating and truly adapting has been a theme in a handful of your reviews (for obvious reasons). But personally the rule I go with is that, if you’re filling in gaps in a serial we do have some episodes for, you should stick to the vibe and budget and existing imagery. The story needs to be cohesive and the existing episodes take precedence. But if you’re missing all the episodes, go as nuts as the vibes of the characters allow! Personally I like when they mesh and match what was originally onscreen but I am a big fan of creatives being creative and will never fault them for doing so at the expense of matching the original.

I am a big second doctor fan so the animated recreations are pretty much essential for watching Troughton. I still think that, in a visual sense, this is by far the best made animated recreation of a classic episode. The lighting really goes a long way and the scenes in the first episode when the truck is stopped really sells you on the mood. Such a great animated piece of Doctor Who.

Like yourself, I also had “The Invasion” as my intro to Missing Episode Animations…but that’s more because I bought the DVD back in 2008 when it was still the only one done at the time 😅. It’s definitely an enjoyable watch and Cosgrove Hall really did give it their all…however, they also didn’t come cheap and from what I had gathered from the BBC statement at the time, it would’ve been too expensive to continue using them in future. But the quality was definitely worth it and Cosgrove Hall did still get a chance to animate a scene from later in the serial, that scene being the famous scene of the Cybermen marching down the steps of Trafalgar Square. However, due to that scene already being intact within the serial’s existing episodes, this was done more as a proof of concept and only released as part of the DVD trailer. The scene is live-action in story…but at least the animators got to have a little bit more fun with the Cybermen beyond the one scene in Ep. 4! 😅 Of the animations that have come out since, I do feel that I have to rank two of the more recent ones at top of list…toss up between “The Macra Terror” and “Evil Of The Daleks” as I feel both animations capture the feel of both stories excellently while also updating in a way that feels beneficial to the story. Most obviously the case with “Macra Terror” as the production team have themselves stated on many occasions how the creative vision they wanted to portray on screen back in 1966 far exceeded their capabilities, leading to the Macra being far less convincing on screen than intended as they only had one Macra prop to work with and the size and weight of the prop made it to where it simply wasn’t as mobile as it needed to be. This essentially led to every scene featuring a full-size Macra used what was basically stock footage from one actually filmed scene. The animators were able to throw this limitation straight out the window, meaning fans now get the chance to watch “Macra Terror” the way the production team WANTED fans to see it, with giant Macra all over the place, surrounding our heroes, filling the control room and just far too many to deny….no such thing as Macra INDEED! 😮😅 In this case, the changes actually IMPROVE the story in such a way that “Macra Terror” has gone from being Season Four’s biggest embarrassment to now being seen as the true classic as it is…❤️ As far as “Evil Of The Daleks” goes, its status as a legendary missing episode is without question. However…the telesnap recons don’t convey this very well and I, for one, always fought sleep halfway through. That simply wasn’t the case with the animation though. For both this one and “Macra Terror”, I streamed them and so was limited to color only. I’m normally a B&W ‘60s Who purist but having them in color honestly didn’t bother me like I expected it too as the lighting, particularly in “Evil”, feels absolutely SPOT ON and so it still feels like watching proper ‘60s Who, just with added detail thanks to the color presentation. For me, the animation brought this story to life and I found myself excitedly watching it multiple times over, absorbing each and every last detail…even through the middle episodes where Jamie is trying to rescue Victoria, the same parts that used to put me to sleep! 😅 And the final end? Well…if it had been…I’d say the Daleks went out with a bang! If you’re a Dalek and The Doctor’s actually willing to go along with your plan…RUN! 😅😂🤣 All in all, I’m glad we have these animations as they’re likely going to be the only way we, as fans, will ever get to actually experience these missing episodes the way they were meant to be experienced…as watchable episodes instead of still photographs. We need MORE of these, BBC…

I adore The Invasion animation. It has held up really well. I do quibble a bit with Zoe’s lack of a costume change despite dialogue and story necessitating it, but I didn’t pick that up until my 2nd or 3rd viewing. I enjoy the noir, gritty feeling this one brings. There’s something wonderful about this little epoch of Troughton’s era where we have such tonal and story variation as we go from the banal 50s sci-fi of the Dominators to the avant- garde esque surrealism of The Mind Robber into the gritty realism of the Invasion. The animation absolutely sells this.
@tayloredwards7441Ай бұрын
About the Easter Eggs…love most of them although some of the newer ones are a little obvious. I feel like the ones in this story are small and feel like a reward for repeat viewing, rather a distraction. The Invasion is hands down one of my favourite Troughton stories. I first saw it on VHS as a kid, borrowed from a library that sadly no longer exists. I vaguely remember how some of the shots on the tape had this weird pink tint to them. Getting it on DVD was fantastic: I think it was the first time I'd seen a recon of any sort at that point and they did a really solid job considering the budget. The "making of" stuff is great, too. Seeing the raw footage they rotoscoped for the Doctor running across a rooftop while being shot at is just the sort of silly behind-the-scenes stuff I love.

I had this on VHS back in 93, and was happy enough with Nicholas Courtney's linking bits. Agree with you though, the animation was bang on, and as near as completes what is an absolutely mega story. Cosgrove Hall were as much a British institution as Dr Who so it was right they did it. Like you say, it's a real shame they didn't do Power of the Daleks cos that first iteration wasn't great. Tobias Vaughan was a great character - full on Bond villain. Great treatment of a great story. Thanks!

Cosgrove Hall were always good at cutting corners creatively. There were always sequences in Danger Mouse that were set in the dark where they eyes just bobbed up and down over dialogue. I love The Invasion, but can admit that it's probably slightly too long - for me, jumping between live action and animated episodes helps keeps the pacing just a tiny bit fresher and actually helps the story along a little bit. For a long time, we assumed these might be the only missing episode animations we'd get, so the Invasion has always felt really special to me. I appreciate we've had more technically sophisticated animations since, but I feel like they prioritised matching the tone of the existing episodes and it's absolutely brilliant for that.

Great documentary as always Josh! 💖 The Invasion 1&4 has always been one of my favourite animations (Admittedly due to nostalgia) and takes me back to that time between this and I believe 2011 when Reign of Terror came out wondering weather or not we would ever see another animation ever again. I've actually debated on the topic of if the original episodes were recovered, would I really watch them? I'm so used to the animation that I cant imagine watching them any other way! 🤣

Yeah that’s the thing - imagine an episode coming back and it’s just worse hahaha

@@JoshSnares If 1&4 are recovered it will make a fascinating comparison.

The people who did Danger Mouse. Nothing more needs to be said.

The only error in the Invasion animation was at the beginning of the first episode as Zoe's costume isn't the same as in The Mind Robber.
