I totally get that "the less a dog looks like a wolf.." notion. I guess that's why I've always preferred dogs like german shepherds and huskies. As domesticated dogs go, they don't look that far removed from their wolf ancestors. It actually kinda upsets me when I see breeds that are not only so far removed from their ancestors they barely even look like dogs anymore, but struggle with even the most basic of functions like walking or even breathing.

Alex the parrot there... I read that beyond all the counting and naming of objects, recognition and identification, there was one thing Alex did that was a mind-blowing moment for the researchers. In a session of practicing naming colours, where the researcher held up and object and Alex was to say "Red" or "Green" or whatever, Alex suddenly stopped, and looked at the researcher, and said... "what colour am I?" He'd never been taught to say that, he'd never been told he had a colour, he'd never been taught to ask questions, and like every other animal in history, he'd never before expressed curiosity at an aspect of his own existence. (Other animals may be aware of their own existence, but that's different.) "what colour am I?". Think about that for a moment. That level of cognition is... orders of magnitude above an elephant painting a picture of an elephant. Astronomically beyond solving a simple puzzle for a reward. And it blows using a stick to dig bugs out of the ground, right out of the water. By the way, they told him "Grey", to which he said "Grey... Alex is Grey."

that's legitimately incredible, even chimps who are taught to communicate with researchers have never been observed to ask a question, they can answer them all day, but alex may be the only animal ever observed to ask a question, thank you for that information, truly groundbreaking.

@AndorinhaIberica It was the Papal inquisition under the control of the Pope, not the Spanish inquisition under the control of the Spanish Crown. Two separate inquisitions. Two separate courts, two separate systems for trials. Also, while Itally wasn't unified, it wasn't entirely under Spanish rule. At the time of Galileo's life Pisa was part of the Duchy of Florence, and then the Grand Duchy of Tuscany both of which were ruled by the very capable Medici family and were not conquered by Spanish interests, however both of which were also quite under the influence of the Pope.

I used to have a rabbit a few years ago, who has now passed, but I have a cool story. Basically, at my house, we have a back patio that is completely open to our backyard. We never kept our rabbit in a cage and let him roam freely around our house, so he was basically a cat. We also let him go outside. The odd part is that he never went into our backyard. He could've easily just run away from us, but he didn't. A rabbit isn't considered the smartest animal, but I still find it interesting that he never decided to leave. He could've just stayed for higher survival purposes, but he had the option every day to just leave. I dunno, but I still think it's very interesting to think about.
@dallyshallow62128 жыл бұрын
Well i am more of a cat and dog person, but i do have a rabbit story as well. I had a pet bunny once, and I too let him roam around the house often. However, he wouldn't let me walk anywhere or do anything...because he would always run in circles around me, thumping his back feet loudly on the floor. I finally had enough and checked the internet for answers. What i read made me uncomfortable. This is what the article said the rabbit was thinking when he ran around me in circles, thumping: "You have the sexiest feet! I want to have sex with your feet!" and then it told me what i should do: "sit down on your feet IMMEDIATELY!" true story.
@dallyshallow62128 жыл бұрын
Arsalan Khan well if you take into account that animals DO have a better sense of smell than us, then it doesn't seem so incredible. my rabbit also liked to hop on my back if i was laying on the floor on my tummy, reading. and before you start laughing again, no he never did try the nasty there but after i read the article i wasn't comfortable with him on my back anymore haha.

We too once had a rabbit that basically was like a cat. I think she and her sister-rabbit were taken away from their mother way too early when they were sold to us because they were such tiny little things and got weaker and weaker and probably would have died if we didn't start bottle feeding them. The sister-rabbit died after a month or so but the other one lived. She was roaming around freely in the house and garden without running away or going into hiding, she would follow us around sometimes and she also wasn't afraid of my aunt's dog.

They may say that your pet only loves you because you feed them. And that may be true, but we only love our family members because they help us survive. We don't see it that way, because it's an illusion. So why is it that animals are primitive? Why is it that animals can't think the way we do? What if they do and we just can't communicate?

+Joe Mattock He should probably also mention that onions have 12 times as much generic material as humans do. Life just isn't that simple. We mustn't judge other organisms by the amount of genetic material they have.
@laharl2k8 жыл бұрын
+Joe Mattock what is cruel? that we breed them to fit what we liked? or that we let them live better, longer without having to even hunt in exchange for their presense and look? what do dogs do to be worth the food they are given? they have it easier and better than most homeless people do. Theres no way that anything we do after that is somehow cruel. Unless of course you dont feed them and let them to starve but being given free food just for how you look is in no way cruel.
@JackieChinJR8 жыл бұрын
+Laharl Krichevskoy It is subjective, like you say, how we look at cruelty in selective breeding. On the genetic led diseases side, I have a toy poodle at home which suffers from muscle aches in right hind leg all the time. Brought to the vet and he said it is a result of selective breeding to maintain the breed's small size and short legs that led to weaker, maladaptive muscles. Moreover, living indoors with human walking on slippery marble and ceramic surfaces can only worsen the case. So cruelty or not, I wouldn't say human didn't at least went a little overboard in interfering with pet's health and genes...
@laharl2k8 жыл бұрын
Jackie Chin well, it sure isnt worse than it is for cows and sheeps, which were breed to be tastier and easier to kill (less agressive, more tame) IIRC there's a breed of sheep (or was it goats?) which has a genetic problem which causes it muscular paralisis or something when they are stressed, like when being chased or scared. They breed them so to keep that "feature" to it's easier to round up. Cows i dont know about any desease but i know the breed them to be weaker, with more fat in between muscular tissue, so all in all they are but a chunk of meat, all muscle with no fiber so its meat is tender, kept in a confined place so that they dont walk a lot and develop stronger muscles. As for pets i dont like dogs a lot, so i'll stick with my all white "maine coon + random street cat" which so far apart from being huge (pillow size) doesnt seem to have any health issues. The only selective breeding problem i see in it is that he has the dexterity of a rock, most likely for being so big. Seems cats dont escalate very well with bigger bodies. Smaller cats are faster and way more agile than bigger ones. Even if he is a cat he can jump as high as things i can climb onto. I have two more, one is a generic three colours one and another is a who knows what that appeared in our patio, all pearl black, and very muscular. He's not as big as my cat pillow but he's quite agile and really ripped, so much he almost doesnt have a neck

no. The parrot only knew 100 words and said them every night before bed.. The only reason he used those words was because he was taught them, he had no understanding of what they meant. I saw it as a good example of how so many people can be in denial

I completely agree with your quote at 7:05 - "In some cases, it [pure- and extreme-breeding] has created unintended health problems, driving the Kennel Club's leading geneticists to believe that the less a dog looks like a wolf, the less it makes any sense." Can you refer me to the precise place you got this, please? Your Kennel Club link does not contain it.

@PlainsPup8 жыл бұрын
ARCH PEACE Yep, agreed. Pure-breeding means closed gene pools and also implies "line-breeding," a euphemism for incest, which most plants and animals (including humans) naturally try to avoid for its tendency to increase the incidence of inherited disorders. There's also the issue of "extreme breeding," which includes traits like flat faces, short legs, droopy ears, deep wrinkles, etc. that are also really just genetic disorders that reduce the health of dogs - fundamentally no different from physiological problems, etc. Domestic wolves (dogs) really should remain overall somewhat similar to their wild cousins to remain healthy, and that includes avoiding inbreeding and extreme breeding. Village and mixed dogs tend to be healthier, because they tend have higher levels of genetic diversity. Those who still want variety should stop perpetuating weird traits, but they can have different dog landraces and types, which still serve a function (hunting, herding, etc), without being inbred. The dog and cat fancies should also learn from livestock breeders, who still have breeds, just not pure (genetically isolated) breeds.

Humans instinctually hate change. We are incentivized to maintain current beliefs and behaviours. Change required large amounts of time and energy to be invested in new beliefs and behaviours which translates to high risk. If someone told you that you've been doing something foundational to your life all wrong and you have to stop doing it, you will have an extreme instinctual aversion to that person's views. We have to be able to recognize and prevent our instinctual attempts to avoid truth.

We don't hate change, we hate difference, change is but the pathway for a different reality.

I dunno about chimps, but I know that while animals may not correlate pointing with language, they do understand that when you point you are referring to an object that is beyond yourself or the immediate field of view. Cats and dogs alike understand without training when you point to an object that the point of interest is not the finger itself, but that there must be something else you are referring to, and will look for that instead. Its universal in many ways, I've successfully pointed things to pet fish, cats, dogs, birds, lizards, even though these animals don't have fingers to point themselves. Since chimps are so smart, I kinda doubt they don't understand the concept of pointing.

When ancients say "heart" they mean brain or mind. The believed that the seat of consciousness, understanding, and knowledge was the heart. It doesn't mean, as some people speculate, that the ancients believed that we reason by emotion. The seat of emotion for them was the bowels, intestines, or lower stomach. This leads to many misinterpretations of the Bible for instance.
@xxXthekevXxx7 жыл бұрын
You’re right. People say “I love you with all of my heart”, which is really just an outdated phrase from when we thought our heart was our brain.
