“A card collection is a magic carpet that takes you away from work-a-day cares to havens of relaxing quietude where you can relive the pleasures and adventures of a past day - brought to life in vivid picture and prose.”

Wonderful video. I can't say I've known a person who doesn't collect something (and I've known homeless people). I've only, personally witnessed one hoarder. They had newspapers mostly, several parrots and dogs, mice (I'm pretty sure that was a byproduct of the clutter.) I was installing cable at the time. The stacks of newspaper were all waist high and created a labyrinth throughout the home. They were proud of their collection and tried to share with me, but I was working 16 hrs a day, six days a week and didn't have time to appreciate their passion, unfortunately. I'm sure any person with such a specified passion can embue a wealth of knowledge pretty quickly. My loss.

I collect images I find unique online. There is no box, only 30+ file folders. Some I'm ashamed of, while others I couldn't tell where I got them. Thousands of images. Plants animals objects abstract art, they all are mirrors of me. I archive my thought and stories too. I'm no more or less than these.

On a side note, collecting can also be a form of memory retrieval. I associate certain memories with particular objects, specifically stuffed animals. I can remember who gave them to me, or particular games I played with them when I was a child. That collection is safely in a rubbermaid tub now, and I've moved onto semi precious rocks. But the same principal applies. I could tell you where I got every rock in my house and I make a point of collecting a new one when I go on trips and such. My friend went to india and brought me back a rock me dug out of the earth for me. So yea, that is another reason people collect.

@Grizzly_sr 8 жыл бұрын
It started as a simple game: I always said friends and customers "You can call me 'Grizzly', but it's up to you understanding if I'm a ferocious bear or a tiny smiling teddy". Turns out someone decided to gift me a little teddybear for this, and I started keeping them on a shelf. Then I did a couple of big works (a little bbs software in the past and a couple of self-pubblished books) asking to send me a teddybear as a sign of appreciation of my work. Now it's still growing ;)

You should do a video about essentialism - the reason an X-Ray of Elvis sells for $3500, but even a perfect copy is worthless. It deserves your explanation and philosophical analysis. I would actually personally be very pleased if you did such a video and also touched on the idea of collection of digital 'objects' because I find it fascinating. At first blush, the concept seems inane, as there is no 'essential' or 'original' combination of bits, and they can be duplicated and spread around with nearly zero effort as perfect copies, and even if I did obtain a 'valuable' set of bits, I would create and move around copies, destroying any 'essential' value. They are inherently only a big number. And yet, if a digital copy of, say, a recording of Kurt Cobain singing 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' for the very first time, existed on my computers hard drive, and no other versions exist, it would be valuable. No one could reproduce it, even if given infinite time and infinite resources aside from knowing what the big number is. And once the last copy was deleted, it would be impossible to reproduce at all. An infinite computer given infinite time could generate the number, sure, but it could not distinguish it from any other number and say 'this one is certainly the recording being sought'.

Dennis Morin Yeah, same here! I'm 26 and have been collecting since my mom gave me my first set before school age. An old Beetle, Cadillac Eldorado, and an early model Ford F-100. All of those are trashed lol. Now I've since collected around 18 cars and counting... hard to collect at around $60 a pop lol. But like you said, older ones were played with and damaged by either me or my younger brothers.

This, to my opinion, is one of the better video's on this website. Not only am I a collector myself, but found some slight reasoning to acts I could not explain myself doing up till now. funny how simple some things might seem after someone explains it, simply by showing a different direction. Combine that with excelent storytelling and a very nice montage to top it all off in the end and I suddenly realise again why Vsauce 1, 2, 3 have never left my subscriptions. Sometimes I wish I could leave more than just a like though, especially with inspirational and even slightly comforting pieces of video art like this. Please keep up this kind of work. ;) And as a collector: Thanks for the professional insight into collecting.

I know it's been a while but that ending was so fantastic. I'd love to see a full video showing each person and the thing they collect because wow some of those items and the dedication of the people and just it was so awesome to see and a montage instead of a collage would be so entertaining, especially if each person said something neat about why they do it or which piece they love most.

Its what we do. We are a species that curates EVERYTHING. Personal collections are just extensions of that base nature. Even language comes out of our need to label and categorize things; thus allowing us to communicate with each other more effectively.
@danielsandoval8345
@danielsandoval8345 8 жыл бұрын
Collecting originating from out nature could be argue in a sense that why we collect today is not for self-love as animals would do in order to survive but rather out of desires. This is a result from intelligence where recognition of the "self" and others lead males us what to stand out from the rest of the crowd. If look for the piece from Plato about poets and artist then it might be more clearer what I'm saying. (°♡°)

I'm a lot like Burdick, I'm not so much a collector, though, as I am someone whose creating a collection. I feel a desperate need to create, art, sculpture, games, animations, I want to make a collection of things great enough to leave some positive impact on the world, and , like Burdick, I find myself hindered by the pain in my hands, and my own disabilities. To know that someone facing similar obstacles could be remembered in such a way is so incredibly inspirational. Thank you so much for this video,. It doesn't make what i'm doing easier but, it makes it feel that much more worth it.
