I went into this knowing nothing about it and actually enjoyed it, yes it was cliched in places and the sub-genre was obvious from the early stages of the film right up to the actual reveal due to certain naming details. Trying to make a Gothic Horror film set in modern times is tricky and I felt that setting it amongst the British Aristocracy giving it a period drama feel managed to do this. The Jordan Peele influence was there in the social commentary and while not as intrinsically bound to the story it wasn't overly forced. No it wasn't perfect but it kept me interested and it does set up a possible sequel which could be interesting if they went the obvious route. Plus it had Sean Pertwee as a Butler channelling Alfred from Gotham. Keep up the good work, glad we don't agree on everything.

Very much enjoyed the review. Thank you! I was wondering how they would approach this movie and it sounds like they tried some nice things until perhaps the last half or so. Although I live in the U.S. I grew up loving the Hammer Horror films from the late 50s to the early 70s out of the U.K. I don't watch horror or thriller films as much these days. At my age I prefer more happy films, romantic comedies, docu-series, action and adventure, etc. But I have been waiting for someone to bring back the atmospheric look and feel of the old Hammer films. I had a feeling this film was not going to do too well, but it was great to listen to your review. It helps to know that the film does have some decent moments and that the story does not play out quite the way they make it seem in the trailer.

I actually really liked the film. Yes there are a couple aspects that are a bit weird such as the usage of Jonathan and Mina Harker as part of the Vampire horror cult lol I loved that she met up with her friend again at the end to exact the perfect revenge for what happened. (Trying not to reveal too many spoilers lol) overall I would give this a 7.5/10. A film doesn't have to be a cinematic masterpiece or out of this world to be fun and enjoyable in my opinion lol anyways I love and appreciate your review and I agree that this is more of a film to watch at home.

I wasn’t excited for this just based on the fact that I loved the first The Invitation from years ago so much. To see Nathalie Emmanuel in something good watch Misfits, the first 3 seasons especially. She’s only in an episode but there are TONS of pre-GoT actors in it, and it stars the actor who played Ramsay Bolton.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but your description makes a lot of sense. I am told a lot of romance novels deliberately lean into the tropes because they are emotional comfort food. Maybe that's the intent here?
@MsKassandraKotaku2 жыл бұрын
I saw this last night and had trouble even talking about it with my housemate today. I wasn't sure if it was that I just don't care at all about that particular "monster" since I think they are dumb...but by the end I was like "Why don't you just go along with it...at least you'll be in a better position in life and you never showed me you cared that strongly (besides contrived ways)." The sub-text wasn't particularly that well done in my opinion....or I've seen it done 1000% better and some of it felt convoluted like they were taking two different aspects (race and class especially) and then got confused about which they wanted to comment on in the moment. But at the end of the day I didn't regret seeing it...but was very glad I got to see it for free with my cinema membership. I will say the main actress did well with what she was given...but she wasn't given much at all.

It's a shame when: 1. Trailers give away the film and you can tell without seeing the film to confirm. 2. Filmmakers recycle movie names, themes, special effects, etc without really introducing anything original. 3. Films like this get a theatrical release when so many other don't but should. fwiw I haven't seen this but I feel like it's def not worth the $15 movie ticket. Thankfully so many (hopeful) gems coming out in the next few weeks!
